    Hi Degsy,
There are two type of veneer porcelain and composite. Composite veneers are made directly on the tooth using white filling. These can look good in the right hands however they are not as pretty or durable as porcelain.
A porcelain laminate veneer is a very thin (about 0.5 - 1mm thick) piece of porcelain much like a fake fingernail that you bond with a special cement to the front of a tooth. You can change the shape....colour...length and angulation of a tooth (if its very out of place or very discoloured then a full crown might be better). 500 euro sounds like a very good price for a veneer, some really good veneers can cost a dentist much as 700 euro in laboratory fees alone. To give you some idea of the procedure involved and why the cost is large compared to a filling I will list the step involved.

    1. Preparation of the tooth...remove the top 05 -1mm of the enamel of the tooth. Take about 30 minutes.
    2. Impression of the Prepared tooth in high accuracy silicone type impression material 10 minutes.
    3. Fit a temporary veneer to prevent sensitivity.
    4. Send the impression to a lab,
    5. In the lab - pour the impression in accurate dental stone, section the model around the tooth to be veneered. copy the model. Coat it with platinum foil. Condense porcelain on the foil in increments using different colours to mimic a real tooth (very skilled) an fire in a vacuum porcelain oven. Adjust and add more porcelain and fire again. Polish, glaze, fire again and send to the dentist. Some high strength ceramic cores are made in some circumstances that are computer milled and these are even more complex.
    6. Back at the dentists. Remove the temporary. Clean the tooth up. Prepare the veneer for bonding. Prepare the tooth for bonding. Bond the veneer under very dry conditions. Remove excess cement and adjust for bite etc.

Lots of detail with a lot left out. So now consider both the lab cost and the time and overheads (nurse, receptionist etc.) of the dentist (professional fees) and 500 euro ain't so much.

Yeah you can get them cheaper...but like all things in life If you buy something cheap you will get something cheap, an when it come to aesthetics at the front of your mouth you don't want something that looks anything but ideal. A dentist that specialises in aesthetic dentistry like veneers is called a prosthodontist (cosmetic dentistry is not a real speciality)

Here is a site with animated pictures...not a great site for information but nice pictures

as fitzgeme says, doing a veneer is an incredibly skillful undertaking to do it properly both on the lab side and on the preperation and cementation. most definately not one to do on the cheap as expections are rightly so high. doing a good veneer most probably ranks higher in doing properly than anything else out there in dentistry including orthodontics or even implants. 500 is a v fair price for a good job:)
it may be correctable by orthodontics also. depends how far its out. also something to note is teeth can feel strange when veneered if out of the arch line as they become 'thicker' and also sometimes gum health suffers. like anything in this world its a compromise, and one compromise is to leave everything alone if she is happy as is.

am trying to find one of those trips to budapest to have the veneers done and combine hotel stay. Many offers but do no know who i can trust.
Anyone been abroad to have veneers fitted anywhere in europe at a reasonable price?

I already had the gum sheild whitening done a few years ago where you apply the gel for about 2 months, it cost 4oo euro or there abouts but only lasted a couple of years when i was first told it would be for about 5 years.

I know veneers last for 5-10 years, at my middle age :) that would be fine.

Also, what if i have quinn private health care, is that any differnence to price? i know to get this done in Ireland or uk is thousands compared to some european countries.

    thanks

I spent 18,000. about three years ago on Veneers. Dont beleive the dentristy brochures.
First, they DO, file back your teeth, a lot! They give the imporession that its only a little filing. BULL>

I had mine done two weeks, when two cracked.
They stain if you drink coffee or smoke.
I'd advise you to go for ordinary veneers, last as long, but cheaper.
Dont be fooled into thinking they will last 5 to 10 years. They really wont. Google Lumineers , you'll find a lot of complaints.

Another point, when I tried to get in touch with Lumineer, who make them, the run around I got was unreal.

    Best of luck.

I do know someone who went to Kusadasi in Turkey, they are very cheap, and the Clinic was a very high standard.
