since the eircom upgrade at the weekend ive had nothing but a rollercoaster connection varying from brilliant to dialup. mostly tho the pings are being effected rather than the download speeds but right now both are effected. Is this just me or is anyone else on eircom getting a dodgy connection? The only time my connection is perfect is from about 11.30pm till 11am

Aye, suffering from the same problems, extremely high pings 600 - 2000ms. WTF are they at now, and why do companies deny that they are having problems...

Best answer yet from the muppets in Eircom----

""Its a problem with the UK-- all their incoming servers from abroad must be down"""

    Thats a direct quote!!!

im gonna ring them tomorrow.. apart from awfull pings im getting nowhere near my 2.65mbs, most of the time im lucky to get 1.5mbs.. only at night i get my full 2.65mbs/316k and 18ms pings and thats not much use to me then as im asleep.

No ring them now---They are unaware of any routing problem and apparently "a ping of 749 to a multiplay server is quite ok."

Calling them now, on hold for 10mins, got through, they werent aware of the issue but he heard one of his colleagues talking about it. I told him my ping times and that the quality of service as per irishisptest was 99% on Monday and is now 23% average ping to 123.ie is 1024ms, he said he would escalate the issue as I told him lots of other people are reporting it on boards.ie around Dublin.

Hopefully this will bring the attention required to the slow ping times issue that was evident since the upgrade.

    No worries

He is going to call me on my mobile personally once the time is reasonable of course with an update as to what they are going to do. Will update this as soon as he does once I am still online.

Guys they are going to dismiss this if it returns to normal and unless everyone at least tries to log the incident. They might properly investigate it if it is a multiple user incident. And if only a few log it they will label us as "ah sure they probably didnt even reset there modem heads"

Just got an update there from a supervisor.I was sick and tired of being told the usual crap ie reset your modem, you must have spyware, problem with the cabling in your house so I asked for a supervisor to ring me back.

Apparently there has been a cut in the fibre in the Naas area and the increase in latencies is due to the net traffic rerouting to a different server/router.
Estimated time of repair is Wednesday afternoon at the earliest.

So no BF2 for me tonight.

i assume that would affect all users who go through naas so? i'm on digiweb about 12 miles north of naas, and getting the same as everyone else, and i know of a few other people in my surrounding area have the same, on both eircom, and bt. would it be possible that our connections are also being affected by this does anyone know?

Ive a feeling that theres a bit of "spoofing" going on.

In my opinion that server/router that is giving the problem is the server for the whole country that routes traffic out of Ireland.

Irish based websites are working fine for most people but any server that is outside the country or has to be routed out side the country(ie through that problem server--83.71.112.94) is giving the problem.

Try a traceroute to boards and then to say yahoo.co.uk and you`ll see what I mean.
Boards for me pings at 12-17ms but as soon as anything has to be routed through that problem server the pings start hitting 600+.

To test the problem ping that server.Im getting pings of 650 to that at the minute.

    well i just ran a ping test to baords.ie, avg = 211ms !

    tracert:
    tracert3mf.jpg

the line was fine in the afternoon on saturday, sunday and monday, it's only in the evenings it slows down, presumably due to all the residential customers logging on then...

friend of mine is on esatbt in naas on a 2mb line and he was getting 174kbps on irishisptest, he actually hadn't even noticed any difference in speed until i said it....

Did a tracert to 123.ie and it is getting to 83.71.112.94 which according to http://www.arin.net/whois/ is a holand server, sounds like there is a major artery getting out of Ireland damaged.

    mine is mainly wow

most of uk i ping the nice 20-25 or so but to dutch servers i have 500-1000

    and i ping 1000 in wow :<<

WOW is virtually unplayable with this crap :(

Pings between 600-1900 just isnt acceptable

Before the "upgrade" i always got a steady 25-60ms

I just hope this "Cut fibre" story isnt lame excuse that the eircom tech just made up.

Same problem here in Cabra, I'm on the business plus package. Pings are terrible and download speeds lower than uploads.

It is better if ye post tracerts rather than just pings . Also , and someone that understands all this techie stuff might be able to help me out here , i believe that this is one of the "box's" that the eircom routes through while passing through London ( no idea what that means ) but if you try some diffferent servers in England you will see that some are fine and others are crapola .

I don't understand ( loads ) why some are fine again on the 5th hop and some aren't .

That server isn't in Holland its in Dublin. I know because we host it. The route from our AS goes via c&w in london and from there back to eircom. It appears that eircom lost a sizeable connection on this side of the Irish sea which was directly connected to london.

Nasty stuff, but its better that its slower than you not having any connection at all :)

I'm sure they will get it sorted asap.

    Paul
