Or an online diary for that matter....

An exercice in vanity, or is it banality....or both?

"So yeah. Bought new shoes. They kinda fit, but at least its stop raining"

What did we ever do before we had shopping lists of the other peoples lives.

Not everyone uses their blogs as personal diaries.

A lot of people use blogs to get their views on news, and other topics of interest published. Tagging services like Technorati are great for tracking down blogs on current news stories.
Many software companies (e.g. Microsoft, Sun, IBM) allow their developers to release details on new products or features in products, and why they think it will be A Good Thing. They are used to highlight existing features, and how they should be correctly used.
They are also used by amateur or indie software developers to float ideas to interested people and get feedback.

Some people can achieve a great status in their respective communities based on their writings, like Joel Spolsky as a commentator on software, or Matt Drudge (who would probably have me shot on sight for calling his site a blog).

Basically, you're reading the wrong blogs.
