He showed no class? As opposed to the classy away support, chanting about Munich and George Best. Now that's classy.

You know the difference between Utd travelling support and Liverpools?

    1) Our lot don't sing such crude songs.
    2) Our lot get goaded by ex Liverpool player, nothing said. Liverpool fans do so, and they spit the dummy.

I'd hate to be one of those fans, able to dish it out but not take it back.

Absolute bull****. The George Best chants were in direct response to United's "Are you watching Michael Shields?" You've obviously never been to a Liverpool v United game otherwise you'd have heard the wonderful ditties your lot sing about Hillsborough. "96 was not enough, 96 was not enough........." Ring any bells?

Don't talk Shíte, I was at the game on Sunday and there were no Michael Shields or Hillsborough chants at the game. I would like you to take that back. What has been done in past games has nothing to do with what has gone on in this one. The only United chant directed towards them that would cause any uproar what so ever was the "Murderers" chant after the United fans had been taunted by the Liverpool fans.

There was however George Best and Munich chants from the Liverpool fans. It just goes to show, they can dish it out but when they get some of it thrown back in their faces they are as the Liverpool MP Boris Johnson said "a self-pity city".

Haha. Priceless. Do I want a tissue. What about all the Liverpool away fans that day, bless them. Singing those songs, very funny altogether. But then when someone kisses the badge of the club they love, then the indignance starts.

Perhaps next year Utd fans might sing songs about Heysel. I'm sure Carragher et al would be happy to hear that, and wouldn't react.

INteresting. I think you'll find an ex Liverpool player did much the same thing for Man City a week beforehand, and you didn't hear Utd fans or players moaning.

So football pitches are 30 metres long now are they?

I'll take nothing back. You must have very, very selective hearing. "Are you watching Michael Shields" came across loud and clear on the television and people I've talked who were in both ends of the ground confirmed that it was sung with gusto.

I did not claim there were Hillsborough chants at that game. Last season at Anfield, United fans spent a good deal of the match singing about Hillsborough. I was less than 20 yards from where they were and some off the hate and bile they came out was sickening. "96 was not enough", "You all should have died,"......you get the picture. Or possibly don't.

You only have to browse through the likes of Redissue.co.uk to realise what certain United fans think of Hillsborough.

So Robbie Fowler ran the length of the pitch to taunt United fans then?

Yeah, that's right, I have very selective hearing.
It was not sung. Simple as.

As I said before, what happened last season does not concern me. What does concern me is what happened on Sunday. The fact is that the Liverpool fans chanted George Best and Munich to incite trouble with the United fans. They then turn around and claim to have been incited by Gary Neville celebrating his sides goal in the 91st minute of the game, as if they are all innocent. They truely have earned the title of "self-pity city".

What age are you? You must play on pretty small pitches.

It's very funny that you weren't on here last week giving out about Fowler. But then why would you, you're probably one of these people who is happier seeing Utd lose and have a bad time, than actually follow his own team.

Oh yes, the beastly Liverpool fans did everything they could to start a riot while the poor United fans sat and did nothing at all. Despite the fact that their songs were clearly audible on television, and despite the fact that hundreds of people heard them, nothing happened. Perhaps they should change their nickname to the Red Angels.

Seriously if you're that blinkered, there's no point in debating this further.

Eh, were you at the game? No you weren't. Now can you please stop making things up and concentrate on the facts? Thank you.

Funny, you think that I am blinkered when you say that Gary Neville "ran the length of the pitch" to incite the Liverpool fans. Ironic.

Looks like The Guardian are making things up too....

"Liverpool fans had incensed the home crowd by singing "Are you watching Georgie Best?" in response to taunts about Michael Shields, the Liverpudlian serving 15 years in a Bulgarian prison after being convicted of attempted murder."

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

They must be, because I didn't hear them. As I said before, the only chant that I heard coming from United fans that would cause any uproar was "Murderers". And that was after the Best/Munich chants.

Ok, if there were taunts about Shields, that's wrong. But does it justify Munich chants? No. Does it justify Best chants? No. Do those chants justify Shields chants? No.

What I think is utterly pathetic, is the same fans who sing those songs are more than likely the ones who are complaining Neville's celebration. The dish it out, dont' take it back brigade.

to be fair what any fans were singing is a non issue. Players are expected to put up with abuse its as simple as that theres a number of careers where getting abuse is part and parcel of your job i.e policing and football and you are not expected to react to it. What Gary Neville did was childish why not celebrate with his own fans and team mates there are plenty of other ways to show passion then to celebrate in front of the opposing fans in the manner he did. If Henry did this to the Chelsea fans they would complain, if Gerrard did this to the Utd fans they would complain etc etc he should have been booked and that should be the end of it i dont agree with him being charged but thats the FA's terrible system

Strange I heard from people who were at the game there were tastless chants sung by both sets of fans. *TABLOID SHOCKER*

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

Not really alfie, I don't know about Arsenal or Chelsea fans but the United fans did not complain when Fowler stood in front of the United away fans after he scored in the derby last week.

Why then do the Liverpool fans feel the need to piss and moan about Neville? Are they just being bitter?

Because Fowler scored in front of the United end and celebrated with his own players. He didn’t make a point of running like a lunatic up to rivals fans to celebrate on his own.

I find it hilarious when fowler winds the utd fans up, so I cant really say im bothered by Neville celebrating in the way he did. Far worse things going on in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

I didn't say that. I pointed out the fact that there's a massive difference in celebrating with your teammates beside the net you just put the ball in, to sprinting down to the other end of the pitch to celebrate on your own in front of rival fans.

One was celebration, the other incitement.

Or maybe both fans did it to goad each other and the players on both sides but the fact it, Neville was teh only one stupid enough to react.

He did react, but I'd rather he did. As I said, i've no problem with Fowler celebrating in front of Utd fans, never have had a player celebrating in front of opposition fans. No harm, no foul.

Just talking last night to 3 guys at the game, 1 Liverpool Fan, 1 Manu and 1 spurs fan. They all heard the Michael Sheilds chants from the Manc's.

As for the charge against Neville, silly tbh.

Fergie has commented today, being upset with it all. In it, he mentioned Carragher and Gerrard running full length at Everton fans recently. Now I didn't see that game, so I have no idea if there is truth in this, or what it was like.

    Anyone here see it?

But what happens if someone in the crowd reacts to that then and a fight breaks out? is Neville blameless? At the end of the day, someone in his position should'nt be reacting that way, and no amount of "fowler/Carra/Gerrard did it too makes it any more acceptable". Two wrongs not making a right comes to mind. Stop tryign to justify what your own players are doing by showing exaplmes of others teams players doing it. If thats the way it worked, ever other player in the league would be free to dive all they like based on the antics of Pires.

if i remember correctly did carragher not run the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the pool fans could be wrong though
