There are worries in the consumer end of the games console market, but joy at the developers end. It has been revealed by CVG that the sony PS3, due for release later this year, will contain a sort of DRM, which will only allow brand new games to be played on the console, this measure will also mean that you can only play the game on the console it is first registered to, rendering the second hand game market for the device obsolete.

Thats just plain corporate evil from Sony and nothing but a money spinning scheme. Can't wait for the next Ico/Guitaroo Man/etc. to arrive on the PS3 and have to pay top dollar for a mint shrink wrapped copy on ebay. It's nothing but a good reason to modchip the console when the modchips arrive. Really hope it's just a rumour.

old "news". possibly rumour started by sony to test the waters. the waters got very muddy so i'd be fairly surprised if this gets thrown in

Everyone is blaming sony for this, but its something publishers like EA have been pushing for quite sometime.

For this thread to stay open you'll have to show me where CVG "revealed" that the PS3 "will contain a sort of DRM, which will only allow brand new games to be played on the console".

This is all I can find on the CVG page linked vie the blog you linked to...

"This latest fusillade from one of the industry giants is particularly interesting in light of recent speculation that the PlayStation 3 won't play second hand games and that any title you buy, will have to be an original and fully licensed copy."

It's old news, or as CVG put it "speculation".

Sony weren't testing any waters with this rumour. It was based on a patent that is older than the PS2 itself. They didn't apply it in PS2, they didn't apply it in PSP, and they've come right out and said that no such mechanism will be used in PS3, and that it'll play used games. End of story.

Lets not lie about this, cearly this wont happen, at all, ever.

The video game rental market, will collapse?

Sales for games will plummit for sony?

Most poeple rent games before they buy, how does it work if you cant rent.

I think its very foolish anyone would believe this " rumour" at best.

The overwhelming loss that the companies will make and the loss to ps3 in general would make it too substantial.

Thats why they are trying to do it.

No they wont ever as long as it has that Sony logo people will buy it.

Thats it Sony makes no money in rental sales, "rentalers" can make up to €100 per game. Most games companies are cutting out rentals or trade ins for their games. THis is mainly for the trade in as a game shop can make more on the markup.

Its been well posted here and on bluesnews how games companies are trying to stop trade ins and rental.

But doing it is a different story as each DVD made would need some sort of a code or tag to make it individual, very hard to do as DVDs are moulded from one master. other wise the disc would need to be written too at some stage to make it contain a unique code that another PS3 could read and not play.

    Good point, well made.

The point about how difficult it is to mass-produce non-identical DVDs is a good point. But if they master that then perhaps like DVD movies its possible to make a bunch for buying and keeping that lock to the machine and then a bunch of rental only copies that don't lock but cost a fortune to buy with the option of renting.

Although unless you have to connect your PS3 to the internet I don't see how each PS3 can tell if the disc inserted is locked to another machine - the disc has no way of telling and the PS3 has no way of asking if its not connected to the net.

Maybe they'll do a sky tv and insist your PS3 is connected to a phoneline/broadband.

Based on all the above, I can't see it happening.

They're not trying to do anything.

It's no secret that the whole industry despises the second hand market, but there's no indication that this is a path Sony is going to follow.

If you want to go chasing patents - do you know Sony has one that describes a reward system for sharing your game with others?

Patents mean nothing in and of themselves, and it should be pretty clear that this is the case in the patent discussed by the original poster. Webmasters trawl patent databases to try and find stories, and these guys didn't do a very good job of checking relevancy. Again, it's older than the PS2, and Sony has explicitly denied that such a system will be implemented in PS3.
