So godaddy.com offer good value SSL Certs. My question is can these be assigned to IP addresses or is a resolving domain name *required* ?

You have to have a hostname for a "proper" SSL cert.

And a "non" proper SSL cert ? ;)

Essentially I'm looking to encrypt traffic from my server app (php on lan apache server) and connect from any remote site. Nat works fine but nothing encrypted. So without going down the VPN route I'm kinaa flumoxxed?

self-signed ssl - browser will whine on first connection. Accept the cert and off you go
