Cheap Phone Calls???

Hi gunsofbrixton probably www.tele99.com or www.dialwise.ie would be good option for you. Tele99 is 15c per min for Turkey fixed and mobiles. Although check the cost of the 1520 number with you mobile operator before you dial.

Cheaper option would be www.dialwise.ie with their 1890 number but only Vodafone charge local call rates for these calls, (1.26 ct/min off-peak and 4.26 ct/min peak) the other operators charge a lot more. Although I think Vodafone may block the Dialwise number, no harm trying though. :)

Another cheap service would be www.13434.ie using their mobile access number, which, according to reports here, doesn't work right now. But you could register with them and when it does work you'll be able to make calls to Turkey for little more than the price of a mobile call to Ireland. (i.e. with Meteor 20c per min)

Update: Calls to the US are now 0c per min on 13434, including users on the non-eircom service 1800 820 820. So just a 5c connection fee for any length of call to US landlines. :)

Has anyone verified that call13434 actually apply weekend rates correctly?

I examined a recent invoice and when i costed a weekend call to an irish mobile it was charged at 10 cent per min and not the advertised 5 cent per minute..

Voipcheap.com have now added a Dublin dial in number so that you can make calls from your mobile. You can also setup a "call back" to your mobile by sending an sms to a UK number.

    Thanks for the Tip Do-More!

I use Voipstunt for my VOIP calls and it seems they also support the Dublin access number...

So it looks like i'll be able to use that number (in conjunction with my o2 bundled minutes) to make very cheap international calls!

Great find on the voipcheap dublin access number. I have been using blueface but their rates are 20c/min during the day to call uk mobiles. At 8c/min with voipcheap this will save me a bundle!

Anyone know and dialup numbers you can ring for free with 12343 calls?
    thanks.

Found the text below on VOIPCHEAP site bit confused as to how it works.

I assume you pay for the text to the UK but do you pay a connection fee? Will O2 bill me for the connection? I have speakeasy.

You can now initiate a call via SMS.
Text the number you want to call to +447624800947. We will call you on your mobile, and connect you to that number.
So no need to be around a computer anymore.

The number has to be in international format, for example +44123456789.

You first have to verify your mobile phone number in the voipcheap client, go to Tools -> Options -> CallerID and make sure you have your mobile listed there as a Verified callerid!

You can also send a vCard. Simply send the vCard to +447624800947, and we will connect you with the main number.

Call charges will be settled via your VoipCheap account.

It works the same way as a "call back" to a landline so O2 won't bill you for the call. This setup is ideal for prepay customers.

Basically you text the UK number (the only part that O2 will bill you for) then your mobile rings, you answer it and that starts the dialling to the number you want to connect to. Voipcheap will then charge you a 5cent call setup fee and per minute billing for the call which will be the sum of the two halfs of the call, so for example 9 cent/min for the half to your mobile and say your dialling a landline in Germany that half of the connection will be free.

Hope my explaination hasn't confused you more!!!:D

im using the number 1890990505 for international phone calls. most european landlines only cost you local irish rates...very good. our phone bills decreased by nearly 70%!

Sorry I'm a bit thick when it comes to this kind of stuff. Here's my question anyway....
If my o2 mobile is registered with voipcheap.com and I'm ringing a UK landline all it will cost me is the price of a international text (payable to o2)+10cent per minute(price of a voipcheap call to Irish mobile-payable to voipcheap)+the cost of uk landline call(FREE?)Thanks!

    Told you I was thick,
plus the 5cent set up charge?(payable to voipcheap)

This is going to really shake up international mobile call charges, and it would be difficult for for the mobile operators to stop. (i.e. they'd have to stop you receiving calls from a certain number.) Good news. :)

Great service, using it for a year to UK, US and Oz mobiles & landlines. Irish mobiles calls with 13434.ie are the only ones that dont make financial sense for me ironically. I'm on an 02 priceplan with 1000 off peak free minutes to landlines and then use the websites 016850850 prefix then enter my UK/US nuber etc. No billing issues with frequent accurate invoicing. Customer service is a bit crap tho- you just get the ryanair response- "we are a no frills organisation". Musn't grumble

Don't think this has already been posted here but Blueface are operating a similar service to voipcheap. Its called go mobile and can be found at the link.Link

If you have included minutes on a mobile it looks particularly good. In my case I have 100 free minutes so for example I could make a phone call to the states for 1.4c a minute or UK 1.6c a minute plus 2c call set up fee. People shouldn't dismiss the value of their free minutes but thats not bad. e.g. 16c for a 10 minute call to the states from your mobile! Haven't tried it out - has anyone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Hi walshki, I don't mean to spoil your enthusiasm for Blueface's new service, I'm sure it's very good, but there's something you're overlooking. Assuming you have inclusive call minutes for national calls with your mobile. The same two calls, to the UK and US landlines, would cost just 5c each, regardless of the length of the call, with 13434.ie. :)

Excellent. We are indeed spoiled for choice. I can remember the days of €100 per month phone bills for my wife's international phone calls. I'm now fully VOIP and hardly paying €15 a month and there are still cheaper options.

Folks, I have been using 13434 for over a year now and so are many of my friends who make regular international calls. They change their prices quite often but they are still very competitive compared to many others.

The main issue that I have noticed is the connection fee. The moment you dial 13434 followed by the international number(From a landline), the connection fee kicks in. It then tries to connect and sometimes there could be no answer on the other side or sometimes it could be busy. Going by human instinct, you will keep retrying the number ( if it is busy) and may end up paying more than the actual call cost.

At the end of the month your bill is still cheaper, but they make their money in the 5 cent connection fee which is charged even the connection is not established. Their version is that you are connected to them and hence you will be charged Whether you are connected to the final destination or not is immaterial.

The second issue is with their support. One of the worst !! Whatever you ask there wil be the same answer and most of the time you get fed-up asking.

    Cheers

Anan, I'd agree with your point about the customer service, to an extent. It can be slow and they don't give detailed answers a lot of the time. But then again their service is fairly straightforward, and their web site is reasonably comprehensive.

I'm not sure about your point about the 5c connection fee or about it being charged if you're not connected. I've never found that and I've used 13434 a lot in the past, on their old 1800 820 820 number. I rang numbers didn't get through and specifically made a note of the time, date and the number. Then I looked up my 13434 call details online, and I wasn't charged the 5c connection fee. Maybe, it's different if you use the 13434 prefix, although I doubt it. It says on the 13434 web site you're not charged if the call is not connected. Eircom also have a minimum charge, effectively a connection fee, and it's higher, at 6.6c per call.

Nowadays a lot of people have answering machines so most calls are connected. Once connected whether it's 13434, Eircom, or most other phone operators, you're going to be charged a connection/minimum call fee. But it's usually more than 0c per min after that! :)

    call13434 increase prices!

I've got the function which tells you the price at the start of each call and today discovered that call13434 have increased prices on most destinations.

Irish and UK landlines are still 0 cent/min (subject to a 5 cent connection fee)
but all other European countries have gone up from the previous 0.5 cent/min to 1 or 2 cent/min. Another country that I call regularly, Thailand has gone up from 1 cent/min to 4 cent/min.

These still represent a huge saving compared to Eircon but are none the less substantial increases!

Who is the cheapest for phoning Irish mobiles from landlines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 129 ✭✭din0saur

For non-eircom users in Cork, call13434.ie have now added a Cork access number 021-2422422.

13434 just added some more countries for 0.0 cent/min.

i received a mail from them saying belgium, france, germany and netherlands are 0.0 c/min

i have a question. i don't really understand the whole concept.

i have an o2 mobile. i call french mobiles and landlines quite a lot. always costs me quite a bit on my phone bill because they are not included units in my price. is there a way i can reduce the cost of my calls to france?

if someone could explain how it works exactly i'd really appreciate it because those websites mentionned don't fully catch my attention for some reason. it just seems complicated.

    Read the thread.

I know that may seem rude but there is no need for people to repeat themselves, it's all in the thread and quite well explained.

If you still have issues after reading it then I'll put something better up.

sorry ch750536. just read through the thread, hadn't gone through it properly to be honest. i have gone with blueface.ie. which seems to be the best option as it uses my included minutes. thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

    Big problem with call13434.ie

Used to use a 3v voucher for paying all online bills etc. anyway, this year I have used 4 different vouchers with 13434.ie

They have now stopped me from being a customer.

I even have an outstanding bill I can't pay as they have disabled my payment screen. I have emailed them but they refuse to budge. Bizarre.

So, anyone know of a similar service to 13434.ie where I dont need to dial a full access number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Could you set up a new account with 13434 and pay by some other method (i.e.Laser?) Perhpas another member of your household could open a new 13434 account using their credit/laser card. I'd have to know a bit more about your set-up and the calls you make to suggest an alternative. For example, are you with Eircom? (i.e. do you pay line rental to Eircom?) and what kind of calls do you make most? (local, national, international) and what ones are the most expensive?

If you can't use 13434 anymore you may have to opt for a more radical solution (i.e. change phone service provider or use VoIP)

Update: I couldn't find this when I wrote my post. As far as I know, there's only one other phone prefix service running in Ireland, it's 13636, formerly Vartec, now operated by TalkTalk (owned by the Carphone Warehouse.) Unfortunately their rates are not as good as 13434.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,736 ✭✭✭ch750536

Wow, thanks for the hard work oracle, I couldn't find anyone...

You register the number with 13434, so once its registered, that's it. Really infuriating as I want to pay them...

No problem ch750536, I hope the info is of use to you. If you do decide to change phone providers one of the best value is UTVTalk. They give free off-peak local, national and UK calls for no extra charge, just pay your usual line rental. Plus all other call charges are less than Eircom. It's a cracker of a deal, well worth the switch. There's no catch, just a minimum 12 month contract.

I call a mobile in Japan from a mobile in Ireland regularly for 25c a minute using Dialwise (1520-520-520). If there's a cheaper way, I'd love to know it.

I only have a mobile, by the way, no landline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭Doodlebug

Dialwise (0818 99 81 81) is the cheapest I can find for ringing Australian mobiles. There is a bit of a delay on the calls sometimes, but works better and cheaper than others!

(4.9c per minute off peak & 8.2c per minute peak)

(BTW, anyone know if the www.cheapchat.ie access numbers are working anymore? Anytime I've tried it in the last few weeks, it seems like its cut-off?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 Littlepete

    Hey Doodlebug,

CheapChat.ie numbers dont work anymore, they closed up in Ireland.

Worth mentioning though is you can use their quick dial method with the other operators when using mobiles, below is taken from there site. Means you get more time talking for your money.

On a Nokia Phones On a Siemens or Panasonic phones On a Motorola or Sony Ericsson phones:

Step 1 – Enter the appropriate CheapChat access number Step 1 – Enter the appropriate CheapChat access number Step 1 – Enter the appropriate CheapChat access number

Step 2 – Press “*” 3 times to show a “P” (This will cause dialling to pause till you connect to us) Step 2 – Press and hold “0” to show “+” (This will cause dialling to pause till you connect to us) Step 2 – Press and hold “0” to show “p” (This will cause dialling to pause till you connect to us)
Step 3 – Enter your destination number including the full international code Step 3 – Enter your destination number including the full international code Step 3 – Enter your destination number including the full international code
    For Example:
    1520 xxx xxx p 0044 XXX XXXX

Thanks LittlePete. Actually thats how I store the numbers on my landline phone's address book as well!

Occassionally I've ended up dialling direct from the (Eircom) landline if the call quality is just too bad - but not too often. Its still well worth the few minutes to put these numbers into your phone!

Doodlebug, where did you get the 0818 99 81 81 number for Dialwise? And are you dialling that *from a mobile*? Does Dialwise have a website? (I just discovered the 1520-520-520 Dialwise number by misdialling one day.)

Luckat if you have inclusive landline calls with your mobile you might be able to make calls to Japan cheaper. Register with 13434.ie and you can use their landline access numbers to make calls to mobiles in Japan for 15c per min. Another idea would be to shop around for a good value calling card specifically with cheap rates to Japan mobiles.

    Yeah, here is the link.

    I see they list a Japanese landline access number: 1890 99 02 02 (local rate) and Mobiles: 1520 520 555 (15c/min).

Oh and I ring from a landline.

Nah for calls to landlines and mobiles in the USA and in Spain www.13434.ie is cheapest, if you're using an Eircom landline:

0.5c per min (yes that's half a cent!) for USA and Spain landlines.
0.5c per min for USA mobiles.
12c per min for Spain mobiles.

    5c per call connection fee.

No switching providers, no pre-payment, just set up your account with a credit/Laser card, enter your landline number and start using their service. If you don't use their service, no don't pay a cent. Easy.

I have in fact read the entire thread :) my head hurts..
So 13434.ie is best from Eircom for calling states, so thats good.
I am not in Dublin or cork.. but have free nationwide calls to landlines with eircom.. so I am good to go with this ??

Now I have a bill phone mobile with o2.. I only ring landlines and mobiles in USA.. best options ????

    Thanks again...

If you are with Eircom there's no need to phone any 13434 access numbers, you just put the prefix 13434 before the number you want to dial. Of course first, you need to set up an account with 13434, and enter your landline number. Then you're good to go!

Not sure what your question is about the O2 bill mobile phone.
when you are sayin eircom landline, does it make a difference if it was Bt or perlico etc? I havent checked the site if its there just wanted to ask?

Yes it makes a difference, but not to the call rates, the call rate you pay is similar. It makes a difference to how you access the 13434 service. If you pay line rental to Eircom (i.e you get an Eircom bill), you can use the 13434 prefix before each number. If you don't pay line rental to Eircom, but to another provider, you have to use the local access numbers before you make the call. You cannot use the 13434 prefix if you're not with Eircom. You get similar call rates, but you also pay for the cost of the call to the 13434 access numbers.
