    “ POETS AND PATRIOTS PARTED “ EXHIBITION
    13th February 2006 - 3rd March, 2006

    OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY 11TH FEBRUARY, 2006, 6.00 – 8.00pm

    The University of Limerick History Society present the exhibition
    POETS AND PATRIOTS PARTED to commemorate the joint 90th Anniversaries of the 1916 Rising and the Battle of the Somme and the largely neglected story of Irish involvement in the First World War, where many Irish lives were lost.

    Exhibits include:
    · A wide selection of letters and pamphlets from Sir Roger Casements’ time in Germany, where he was buying arms for the Easter rebellion, kindly provided by Clare County Council.

    · The final letter of Thomas McDonagh Rising leader and Poet, to his wife and family from Kilmaiham gaol before his execution and others of his correspondence.

    · Letters from Padraig Pearse to various members of the Rising leadership,

    · A full collection of Irish regimental badges from the time.

    · Letters from members of the Irish Volunteers who fought at the Somme.

    · Armaments and other memorabilia from the Rising and the Battle.

    The exhibition will run Monday to Friday between the hours of 10.00 am and 5.00 pm until Friday 3rd of March.
