Gerrard is better, christ, it's like a one man band at times.

However, Lampard is surrounded by the better team.

4-1 and 2-0. Awful record against deserving champions. Any delusions other LFC fans have about league victory should now be cast aside.

What about the 3 or 4 Chelsea players pushing Reina in the chest? Didn't see anyone booked for that

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

lol - same could be said of Gerrard - neither were very influtential.

handball or not - you raise your hands you run the risk of a red card

Bah! I know its Chelsea and they are the top team by some distance but Liverpools problems were clearly on show, not compact enough, poor passing from midfield, no-one to lead the line up front.

Harsh harsh decision. Fair play to Chelsea though, they are in a league of their own.

Guess it's a good result from a United point of view, we were never gonna catch them anyway. Not a great game, but Chelsea looked back to their normal self.
As for the sending off, it is the letter of the law that you can't raise your hands to someone's face, but Robben went down as if he'd been shot in the chest, it was disgraceful. Do professional footballers have no shame? They know they're in front of an audience of millions, yet they blatently go down like sacks of potatoes under nothing challenges.

Symptomatic of the game I'm afraid. Switch the jerseys. Would a Liverpool player have went down similarly? It's entirely possible. Sad, but possible.

Edit: Watching the repeat...I do feel bad for Reina. The tackle seems to be fine - though, at the time, it seemed to catch both myself and the commentators off guard. Furthermore, there was indeed a handball. Oh well - made no difference to the scoreline...

    Hmm, interesting stuff...

If the foul initially on Gudjonson was a foul, which I wasn't sure it was, i assume it would be a yellow, unlikely a straight red. If so, why wasn't it given as a yellow? If it was a foul, it had to be a card. Then he got a red card for raising his hands against Robben. Robben went to the ground, but i think he might have gotten caught in the eye, even still, even if he hadn't stayed down, Reina was off, full stop.

Q: If you get given a yellow card, can you get given a straight red afterwards? I would assume you can, but I havn't seen it happen before I don't think. Does it mean you only get banned for one match if you get a yellow then straight red?

Crespo caught Liverpool on the offside, but this time it was given offside. This is just as bad a decision as giving it onside, and just shows how brilliant Crespos movement is.
As I said earlier, Chelsea were going to get caught out against Crespo, and they did twice, they were nowhere near compact enough to stop the passes from the midfield, incl Lampard.

Lampard had a good game, probably best shown by the fact Chelsea won 2-0, and Gerrard and ALonso had a quiet game. Furthermore, he made some great passes to Robben and Crespo, but they were offside for most of them.

If Liverpool were to loose, it was a good loss from a Utd point of view. Dudek is back in goal, so I expect dropped points somewhere in these next three matches from a mess up, especially considering he hasn't gotten his game at all, despite the CL preformacnces. Will be totally out of match practice. Liverpool were well beaten, defensivly they were weak, and it could easily have been 5-0, if Chelsea weren't so bad in the offside department, and Robben played like his normal self.
Up front, Liverpool had one decent chance, that was Carraghers header early on. They lobbed the ball up to Crouch a lot, because the wingers Kewell/Riise/Garcia(for like 2 mins) weren't providign outlets. This led to a lot of 'chances', from the knockdowns, but in reality the real chances were few and far between. Possession was good, but it wasn't used well.
Overall, it was a deserved result. Chelsea took their chances, created a lot, despite their inability to get onside, and defended well.

No it was a wipe out, liverpool were outclassed, simple as that, how was the handball missed! right in front of the linesman. Im not arguing about the sending off but it should never have gotten that far. Fairplay to chelsea, money well spent, Liverpool have a lot of ground to make, would have preferred to see fowler on for 30mins of course.

A red card for the second tackle

Chelsea deserved to win, liverpool were frightened of their bullying tactics and as a result, the likes of kewell and alonso were beaten from the start, leaving liverpool short of options.

reina should have been booked, and robben for faking injury. once again chelsea prove they are not one hit wonders like their opponents.

No, what it means, if I have understood it correctly, is that he got
    A yellow card first
    Then
    Got a straight red

So he misses 3 games for the straight red.
Then the yellow adds onto whatever he is on now, until he gets 5 yellows.

Benitez has changed a lot since he first joined the Premier League don't ya think? In the early days he was a placid chap, a gentleman I suppose you could call him. Now he never seems to stop moaning, he's getting as bad as Fergie and the rest of them.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,649 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

I'll start by saying we didn't really deserve anything from our performance, we were decent but we didn't do enough to deserve a goal, and thats why we didn't get one.

Benitez has changed slightly but i think you are being unfair, Robben was acting up completely, and i think compared to mourinho and even fergie he is still a very civilised figure.

Not only talking about today, he's been complaining a lot in most of his post match interviews lately. I still have a lot of time for the man but I think the pressures of the English game are starting to get to him a little.

people moaning about benitez already. if anything i dont think he's tough enough and too much of a gentleman.

you cant compare what benitez did at valencia with what he's doing at liverpool. he had a great squad at valencia, and this liverpool team are a good 8 players short of being able to beat chelsea in a marathon like a league or even 1 on 1

traore and warnock *need* to go, warnock is a good back up, but he shouldnt be starting against top teams, he's not in their class. why traore was offered a new contract last year is beyond me, total incompetance i guess.

i dont know what to do with risse, he's not good enough to be the first choice left back, and not better than kewell, so i dunno, worth selling if we got a good offer imo

cisse, morientes both offer certain qualities, but both useless because they dont score, simple as. drogba offers certain qualities, but he scores and chelsea are the champions, says it all really.

theres a good 4 players or so that just have to go, we cant afford to keep them and bring in other players. if you want to compete with the best, you need better than what liverpool have in alot of positions.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

I felt Liverpool were severly lacking all over the pitch today, and never really threatened to score, even when they had the majority of the play.

    Warnock was brutal
    Sissoko has yet to impress
Crouch will be gone before next season IMO
Kewell while one of Liverpools better players today really needs to prove that he wasnt a 2 season wonder with Leeds.
    Cisse, the less said.

The sending off was a disgrace. Robben made ameal of it, and can quite rightly be called a no good cheat, though Reina shouldnt have reacted. I didnt even think the tackle was a foul tbh, and lets not even go into Gudjohnssens handball.

Chelsea, while not even playing great today were head and shoulders above Liverpool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭DaBreno

At one point in the game, the stats flashed up showing 36%-64% possesion to Liverpool. As against Utd, we can control a game away from home, but need a natural Striker badly, someone who can read the game as well as score. Steve Warnock should have held the line for Crespos second goal, a striker like him needs only spring the Offside trap once.
Depressing result but at least its only a case of bringing in better personnel, the system is good enough to challenge.

Game panned out as I expected..

Liverpool with plenty of possession but had very few out and out chances.. Chelsea bided their time and took their chances when they came by hitting Liverpool on the break and in general, were far more effective in attack..

Criticising Liverpool's defence and them employing a zonal type system for marking the opposition is pretty pointless. The fact of the matter is that they have statistically conceeded fewer goals than 90% of the league and have the most clean sheets in the league.. The simple fact is that Chelsea are a better team all over the pitch and deserved to win..

Liverpool's weakness is not in its defence. We do not score enough goals and until that problem is solved and the balance between defence and attack maintainted, Liverpool will remain a 2nd/3rd/4th placed team.. As it stands, 1st is unatainable because of the funds Chelsea have behind them..

I find it ironic that a United supporter is criticising Liverpool's defence or the perception that Liverpool have of the team in general.. Maybe they feel threatened by that fact that Liverpool are so close to them again and have a few games in hand..

As for the Reina incident, he was foolish to raise his hand but in general something has to be down about opposition inciting a reaction or taunting someone into reacting.. There was nothing particularly wrong with Reina's tackle and its particulalry frustrating that the whistle should have blown a few minutes earlier for a hand ball.

Lampard had little influence on the game - nor did Gerard to be honest.. Who is the better player? Who's gives a ****e to be honest..

Liverpool's defence has been solid, and I don't think anyone is doubting that, but what people are saying is that they ****ed up on the first Chelsea goal, which is absolutely true. I don't think it was particularly because of the system they use, I just think it was a concentrational slip-up. The second goal was just laziness on behalf of Warnock, he should have been in line with the other back 3. He played Crespo right onside.

There was nothing particularly wrong with Reina's tackle

This point has been made a couple of times in the thread. I have only seen the incident when it happened but it looked like a definite foul to me. The tackle was from behnd fand Reina carried out a scissor type tackle with his legs going either side of the player..

I must look at the incident again but from first impressions I am suprised that anyone would doubt it was a foul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

It appeared to be a scissor kick I suppose but he was close to the player, running at the same speed, wrapped his right leg around the Chelsea player, got the ball and his left leg caught the Chelsea player.. Even if it was a foul (possibly was), the sending off was a shame.

Looks like liverpool aren't the team the fans think they are

Why do people have to say such silly silly things? I think Liverpool are exactly the team their fans think they are. A team well capable of competeing with the best in the world on the pitch from a general play point of view, but who are still prone to errors and badly need a natural striker playing up front to take advantage of the posession and oppertunities they can create (eg. to finish gerrards ball crossed right infront of goal).

I dont think any liverpool fans think we're as good as chelsea. In fact every liverpool fan here stated that finishing fourth this year, but simply closing the gap on the teams ahead is all we could hope for. Job done. Maybe in a yea or two, with some new additions we can compete, not yet. Not surprised with todays result, just disappointed. Would love to see a bid for real class like Torres, though he's not been his mighty self this year, still got 2 so far today against Barca.

As for the sending off - Robben, what a b!tch! can you imagine the mocking youd get if you did that in any of the games played every weekend at every level here? Pathetic for such a good player to resort to actions like that, especially when 2-0 up with 10mins to play.

I think perhaps refs are taking this "raise your hands and your off" rule a bit too literally. Surely the spirit of the rule is "raise your hands and actually attack someone and youre off", not simply touch somebody in an absolutely harmless, if angry, way and you get straight red.

Overall IMO quite dissappointed with the 2 goals conceded today through errors. Warnock obviously not as used to playing as can be seen playing Crespo on when everyone else was in line. Zonal system went mad for the 1st as well. Most disappointing was the lack of threat we created even when around the box, nobody looks like having that killer instinct. Hypia and Crouch both had several good chances on their heads if they could have just put a bit more conviction into it. Praying we get ourselves a real talent over the summer - we need it badly! Crouch has his place, but only beside a top class poacher. The rest are wasters. Hope GOD can at least solve it for this season.

I agree Robben made a meal of very little but Reina did raise his hands and so deserved to go. As I said earlier we have seen other players called a thug here for a very similar offence (not by you but I,m sure you remember the incident). Robben should have been booked as well for his over reaction, unitil Referees start punishing the divers and actors they will continue to cheat.

A tackle from behind is a foul wheter he got the ball or not.

If Essien did that tackle, he would have been sent off instantly, and nobody would have batted an eyelid.

As for Utd fans criticising Liverpool's defense because of fear, right now, if you win your two games in hand, you will be level with United. Those two games in hand are against Charlton and Arsenal.
Between now, and the 12th of March,
    Liverpool play:
    Charlton A
    Wigan A
    Arsenal H
    Man Utd H
    Benfica A
    Man City H
    Charlton H
    Benfica H
    Arsenal A

    Man Utd play:
    Portsmouth A
    Liverpool A
    Wigan Cardiff
    Wigan A
    Newcaslte H
    9 vs. 5

As I've been saying, this is the toughest part of Liverpool season, and even my estimates have to be lowered, because points were dropped at Birmingham.
I'm not particuarly worried, but I think Liverpool have achieved what they needed to do most this season, make the top 3 the top 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,010 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

it was a shame from the point of view that it could have been so easily avoided. It's unfortunate that players like Robben take advantage of those situations, but players must start to realise that the reaction is what they want.

Robben did a Savage on it tbh.

Can anyone explain why for a guy of whatever riduculous height crouch is, he cant head a ball? He's doing the niall quinn thing of not jumping but, for want of a different word, crouching and leaning forward to make it look like he's stretching for it. For at least two headers all he had to do was jump, not even a salmon like effort, just leave the ground, Instead he does as I described and the ball skimmed the top of his head.. These are the type of height I'd expect a player like Moro to get contact on, so crouch should'nt have a problem. In fairness to him he did get up with Cech twice but the best we could have hoped for is a spilled chance.

OT but kepers are FAR too protected these days. They have the advantage of useing their hands so should have no extra protection over an outfield player (less if anything)

Not enough football being played. Too much hoofing up from the back four.

Without defending Reina becuse you cant raise your hand, but Robben is a disgrace. It sickens me to see the way football is going with the like of that. The Drogba penalty from the 4-1 game at anfield was shown during the build up, when he goes downhe is hanging onto his leg and rolling while looking up at the ref with a grin to see if he got a penalty. Fair play Traore was clumsy but a harder line should be taken and he should be booked. While not nessecarily a dive as such, even if he never tried to stay up, but the only reason he could have to pretend to be injured is to get the other player booked. Anyone makeing moraculous recoveries within a min or two should be booked. Sissoko di it a while back too.

    Rant over.

The fact of the matter is that they shouldnt be pulling that crap, it always gets sprung once or twice and at that stage you are hoping teh striker messes up, and thats not good enough. It's especially a concern when one of your Centre halfs makes Laurant Blanc look like Michael Johnson, so you completly fooked if the player gets a head start. Paul McGrath was terribley slow in his latter years but still didnt get caught for pace because he wasnt stupid enough to get caught in a straigh trace with a striker, better positions need to be taken up. With regard the first goal, NO team should be let have 4 players line up on their on in the box while our defence tootles off up the pitch.

I agree with you about crouch I was contemplating starting a thread on his lack of ability in the air but thought it would be mis intrepreted as a wind up.

Considering the head start he has on crosses he is very poor at getting his head on them in any meaningful manner. He is very easilly moved off the ball and usully just ends up heading the ball but with no direction or momentum.

I don't believe any of Liverpools frontline is good enogh for the club with the possible exception of Fowler if he can turn the clock back on his form. I think Benitze realises the shortcomings he has in this area but it's the hardest and most expensive problem to solve. It will be interesting to see if he can get a couple of world class strikers in the summer. Sissoko is another player I just don't rate as good enough for liverpool.

A note on Sissoko when he was bought I kind of asumed he would be spending this season learning as a reserve and sub player, with Didi being the holding/defending midfielder. I think Rafa boobed on that position.

As for Utd fans criticising Liverpool's defense because of fear, right now, if you win your two games in hand, you will be level with United. Those two games in hand are against Charlton and Arsenal.
Between now, and the 12th of March,
    Liverpool play:
    Charlton A
    Wigan A
    Arsenal H
    Man Utd H
    Benfica A
    Man City H
    Charlton H
    Benfica H
    Arsenal A

    Man Utd play:
    Portsmouth A
    Liverpool A
    Wigan Cardiff
    Wigan A
    Newcaslte H
    9 vs. 5

As I've been saying, this is the toughest part of Liverpool season, and even my estimates have to be lowered, because points were dropped at Birmingham.
I'm not particuarly worried, but I think Liverpool have achieved what they needed to do most this season, make the top 3 the top 4

United still have to play Chelsea at The Bridge....

Sissoko is another player I just don't rate as good enough for liverpool.

agreed man, the liverpool strike force are the biggest bunch of misfits in the league, and not an eye for goal between the lot of them. i'm not holding my breath on fowler bringing the goals, i like him and all, but i'll wait and see

the midfield is a right winger short of being potentially the best in the league, but i'd rather see hamman played more than sissoko, he has alot to offer but it has to be channeled(sp?) in the right way and in a more composed and assured way, i think the team plays with more confidence with hamman in it.

but a proper left back is needed, i consider traore and warnock as backup players, not 1st team starters against the top sides, riise is a utility man imo, we dont have a regular left back....chelsea loaned out a left back that would walk into the team ffs

Rafa should have saved whatever he payed for sissoko and just stuck troare in th emiddle. That one sentence says more about Sissoko than I could have said with a whole thread dedicated to him.

While I agree we have a harder fixture list.. We have the benefit of having 4 fit natural central midfielders.. Might prove handy.
