I rented a platformer for the Mega Drive many years ago. It's side scrolling. Suppose it looked a little bit like Castlevania, but the graphics weren't that good.

You play (I think) a wizard. You can collect rings/jewels in different parts of the levels and combine them to create different attacks. You can go to the menu screen and combine, say, the fire and the lightening rings to create a fire projectile. A little like a cross between the materia system in FF7 and Gunstar Heroes.

Does that ring any bells with anybody?

Yeah, I'm surprised, I was really young and could never do well in that game. Didn't actually expect anyone to guess it but then I have no idea what was popular or not back then. By the time I got to play it I must have been only 5 or 6 which is not an ideal time in your life to try work out why when I'm standing on the sahara the things flying in the distance might be nasty.

Sorry Burning Eclipse... not Maniac Mansion. It was a science fiction point and click. It was very difficult with lots of sudden deaths and pixel searching... but I loved it.
