MS Windows Update does not work

The Windows Update option from within MS Internet Explorer takes me to Microsoft's website, I get the scan computer for update screen and as long as I wait, it does not move on - even though data is being sent to and from my computer.

Same situation happens from direct link on MS website. The address bar shows that I'm using V4 of the Update program, though it starts off as V6 and then goes to V4 after a few seconds. Does this mean that there's a V6 - I'm using Windows 98 - is V4 the latest for me? If I want to reinstall the V4 version, where can I get this?

Have Microsoft stopped updates for Windows 98?

Critical updates only, with all support being stopped on June 30th. Windows 98 is now a liability to any system, you should consider upgrading.

Have you gone through the usuals stuff of deleting all cache etc.
