should be 4-0 - bent hit bar and most in a few mins

With Gerrard injured, it just shows the lack of depth in the Liverpool squad. We have far too many mediocre players, and not one top quality striker. The penalty was the turning point but to be fair to Dudek there was minimal contact and he was unlucky it got called. The Ref compensated by not sending him off.

Charlton just hit the post. That Bent lad is everywhere, its like there's two of him ;-)

Its games like this as to why Liverpool's target of 4th is all they are really capable of. 3rd will be well done. 2nd will nearly be a miracle or else a below par Man U or Arsenal.

The Rafalution may have barely begun, but I want Benitez to sign one decent player in the next window. We are grateful for Alonso but we need more of them.

(Getting a nosebleed when he goes too far up the pitch) Alonso has scored a couple from the edge of the box this season alone, do you actually watch the football or just read about it here and try to bluff it ?

if football knowledge was a requirement to mod the soccer forum, you obviously bluffed it.
Sissoko and Alonso have started in the middle for almost every game this season...also, is that not kind of the idea ? one is a tough tackler and the other is a creative passer of the ball ?

the way liverpools formation is on paper is nothing like what u see when they play, gerrard is always drifting in from the right wing and sissoko isnt relied upon to do a thing other than sweep up behind alonso and break up attacks

just because alonso is a creative passer. doesnt mean theres actually going to be any penetration through the middle. he's not a miracle worker

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Hamann may be stately in pace but he can control the ball. That said he should pull Sissoko for Kronkamp right now.

Hyppia off, Traore to CB and Riise on!

I think it has more to do with the blue team from across the mersey losing then it being the FA cup fad2black.

Looks like liverpool are going to blow their games in hand. If they don't win the other game in hand next week they can kiss goodbye to second place.

second place was always a tough thing to do when united and chelsea can lose players and still win games.. what now is the question at hand???

Alonso has been really out of sorts recently. Some sort of mid-season fatigue
seems to have struck, suddenly finnishing forth seems hopeful.

Ah, I read that as "little consolation cause everton are..." etc...apologies.

This week might give some much needed grounding to a few Liverpool fans.

    Full-Time 2 - 0 to Charlton

How did Liverpool play tonight???? was watching the Chelsea game????

Or it might show the FA that a winter break is a good idea. Liverpool have played 40 + games already this season and all that after only a months break after the end of teh season.

As for grounding, liverpool fans have no need to be grounded, are still champions of europe and super cup holders, still in the champions league, challenging better than they were last season and closer to their nearest rivals than they were.

And so, so much ammo for you to continously snipe at Liverpool with. Happy days eh?

Good patch/bad patch. Big deal. To steal a line from the Utd prayerbook, we're still a team in transition.

from what i've seen this is shocking. its like southampton again.
and why the hell were the repeatedly hoofing the ball to fowler? (though he heads better than crouch)

unfortunately after that portsmouth game, i saw this coming...they performed so poorly in that game
maybe the united defeat knocked their confidence or something

Well to win the super cup you have to have achieved quite a bit previously.

next up for liverpool is wigan away..that is a game they will really need to win to get back on track

if not it will be 4 away defeats in a row in the league

Exactly. Liverpool have already played more games than Champions League place rivals Tottenham will all season. The FA have organised the season to suit Sven Goran Eriksson, but at this rate he won't have any fit players for the World Cup.

We have the highest points total after this many games since the Prem became a 20 team league, but there are some problems that Rafa will have to get to grips with. The summer striker clear-out has certainly got a game closer.

    Mike.

How Long is Gerrard out for ? Liverpool are just not the same team without him in a similar way United were not the same without Keane when he was in his prime. The problem is magnified for pool becaus they do not have the depth in the squad to compensate for Gerrards absence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

I didn't get carried away when we won 12 games in a row and I won't get carried away. We're not the finished product yet, Rafa still hasn't got the squad he wants and even when he does it won't provide immediate success.

However, we are better than we were this time last season which was better than we were the year before and this time next year we'll be better still. To be honest I couldn't give a s*** about tonight's result as in the great scheme of things, it doesn't matter.

Grrrrr i hate when fans of succesful teams throw that one up, theres a simple solution to playing less games its called "stop bleedin winning them"

Bad result for pool tonight, that was their game in hand over everyone and after sunday, its leaves them fighting for 3rd.

andy johnson to liverpool at the end of the season

    no thanks

...i'd rather see, vincente, fabio aurilio and owen or kujt come in

get rid of dead weight like...dudek/cisse/le tallec/traore and the other randomers like cheyrou, a good clearout is needed, for CASH no more loaning out players

wonder how much they would get for all of them ? With that money + summer transfer funds surely Liverpool could afford two strikers & a right winger.

Very disapointed at tonights result. I knew the great run would come to an end at some stage but I thought the team would have the character to but it behind them. They obviously got a shock from the defeat at United and with the terrible display at Portsmouth in the F.A. cup they need to get their act together.

This is a test for Benitez now to rise them up again and built confidence.

well to be honest, with the prices liverpool are being quoted for players these days, we should be getting decent amounts for all of them.

any amount cisse will be sold for will come as a dissapointment i reckon, compared to the 14 million payed for him, we'll probably be paying for him long after he's gone : /

lets just pair cisse and diouf in that little part of our memories which aren't accessed very often

united still have to play chelsea at stamford bridge, they could well lose that and if liverpool win their remaining game in hand they would be level on points
of course theres a lot of other games to go, 2nd is hardly a lost cause

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Well this run of games is going much better than expected from my point of view.
I expected them to get at leats 4 points out of in Brum and Charlton, but instead they have 1, and since the next couple of games are when it starts to get hard, I feel if United are going to take 2nd withouta huge amount of pressure.
that said, i thought that before, so nothing much has changed.

    ---

Didn't see the game, were Gerrard sorely missed or what happened?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭TheMonster

Typical pool perfromance - loads of possession - no chances. agree with you PHP Utd have a nice run of game snow so should put a lot of space between them and Liverpool. Chelsea play Utd when they have the league won so won't matter to them really.

    Bring on the cup match.:D

Although Rafa may have been annoyed that Liverpool didnt turn domination into goals in the 1st half last night, it has to be said that although Charlton's goals in the 1st half were fortuitous (a penalty that wasnt, a shot through Dudek's legs), they had two chances that went abegging in the 2nd half with two thunderous attempts from the Bents, one off the bar and one off the post, both chances more deserving of goals than the two that they did score.

Benitez and Liverpool fans can have no gripes about the result, but it was a very poor team selection I thought, with Cisse on the right. Surely Riise should have been on from the start, leave Traore out, Sissoko out on the right or have we tried Alonso out there yet, Hamann on, or Garcia on the right. Liverpool last season may not have missed Gerrard in some games, but they clearly missed him last night.

One thing which is evident is that Fowler is no longer "God Fowler". We knew this before he arrived of course but its a very short window for him to get some much needed goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

well yeah, though from recollection, he didn't see much of the ball unless it had been hoofed at him. the way people go on about bringing fowler on though, i hope this doesn't end in disappointment for many.

I saw some of the highligts of the game again and there are a few interesting aspects.

The first is that Hyypia's lack of pace stung Liverpool on several occasions. He was slow and a normal defender would have been able to cover the striker that led to the penalty. Dudek came out to cover and the player and Ref did the rest to put Liverpool 1-0 down. But Hyypia's slowness was a factor.

The second time it caem into play was for the 2nd goal. Traore was woefully slow to react, and Hyppia was as well. Carra who was on his arse in the box also for once didnt get up promptly and the Charlton back got an undefended shot from about 8 yards out. It did go through Dudek's legs but you cant really blame him for that.

The third time was once again poor coverage by Traore, Hyypia covering but making a poor attempt at offside leaving the forward with an unchallenged shot at goal which cannoned off the bar. Similarly, the Charlton chance that came off the post broke through the Liverpool back line on the left hand side, Traore and Hyypia once again conspiring to let players walk past them.

Which all add to what we already know, that Hyypia is a problem, and even though the symptoms of that problem may have gone away for a lot of matches, the actual problem itself has not gone away, and it cost us last night. We are strongest down the ride side with Finnan, and Carra also on that side, but who does Benitez sign, Kromkamp, so go figure.

Traore was definitely off the pace last night so Riise would have been a better choice.

In terms of our lack of striking capability, the team missed two golden opportunities. If it was Shevchenko, he would have scored the two more than likely. Crouch was in an ideal position in the 1st half but was slow in getting his shot off. He just doesnt have the capability for quick-fire clinical finishing. Morientes had a similarly-angeled chance in the 2nd half. He did better but hos shot ws too close to the keeper, so again, he should have put it away.

The faults that Liverpool have are coming back to haunt and whats needed now is a run of better fortune which would boost confidence. There are no guarantees that it will happen though.

CHelsea had the league wrapped up last season in the match at old trafford, didnt help the result for united though did it.

pretty weak arguement for real, of course chelsea will want to beat one of their nearest rivals, if only just to further prove their superiority.
and they'll also want revenge for the old trattford defeat
