Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wireless problem - No Default Gateway assigned

    I use a wireless router at home and the system has been working fine except for the past couple of days. I havent changed any settings but now there is no default gateway assigned so it will not work. There is an IP address and a subnet mask given.

    Hopefully this is a straight forward problem to fix as its a real pain in the ass.

    Thanks for any help! :)

    I assume you meant the gateway on the WAN side? Who is your ISP? If IIB you most likely have a static address and will need to get in touch with them for the gateway address. DHCP external address should be giving you the gateway by default (obviously!). I would get in touch with the ISP.

    Hi, thanks for the help.

    My ISP is Eircom. I dont really understand the whole thing in depth. I have one of the standard Caymen modems and have a router connected to that.

    My laptop signal is strong and there is an IP given by DHCP but no default gateweay. I'm presuming that is the problem?

    Sorry I can't clarify it any further!

    I presume ur taking about the gateway setting on one of the PCs connected to the router. In which case the gateway ip should be the ip address of the router. Typically this is 192.168.1.1 but it can vary according to what router you have. Check your manual to find default ip address of router.

    ok,ill see if i can manually input that into the connection setting on the laptop. thanks for the help

    Whereabouts should I input the 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway? Repairing the connection doesnt work either....:(

    The Default Gatway is the IP address where all TCP/IP requests that are not for the local network are sent.

    If a PC with say an IP address of 192.168.1.100 wants to talk to any other PC on the same network ( ie the 192.168.1.x network ) it will try do it directly. All other TCP/IP packets not for machines on the network 192.168.1.x are sent to the default gateway address. The default gateway must be on the same network as the PC that is requesting the data, typically if the PC's address is 192.168.1.100, the default gateway would usually be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 (but the last field in theory could be any value between 1-> 254 ).

    I guess the question is how are the ip addresses being assigned on your network? is your router/modem using DHCP? ( where it gives out the addresses automatically to the client PCs? )

    When you look at your windows PC is the IP address that is has 192.168.x.x or something very similar? When windows can't connect to a network it usually sets some sort of IP address for the PC, I've never actually figured out where this comes from, but it will never give a default gateway.

    Can you plug directly into your modem/routher with an ethernet cable and verify that this works? and that you get a valid IP address?

    hope this helps.

    Start->Settings->Network Connections.

    Right click the network connection (Wireless or Local Area depending on how you're connecting). Select properties. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on properties. There will be a slot there to input gateway.

    Just make sure the ip you enter matches your router/modem.

    Thanks IRL, just one more thing, how can I find out my IP address of the router?

    Thanks

    Read the manual for router. It will give you the default address of the router. Linksys generally use 192.168.1.1, DLink use 192.168.0.1. But it can vary.

    Ugh, OK, I still can't get it to work. I tried a few of the variations with the IP addresses and stuff but still no joy.
    Hopefully this can help;

    My router is a CNet CNBR-914W
    My modem is the standard Eircom Netopia one.

    On the router, the following activity is shown:

    WLAN: flashing
    LAN; light on

    On the Modem;
    Power; on
    Usb Active: flashing (connected to the PC via USB - wireless to the laptop)
    DSL Sync; on
    DSL Traffic: flashing
    Ethernet traffic: off
    Ethernet Link; on

    Thanks again fellas...

    Ok, bit of an update. I can use the internet with a LAN wire connected directly to the back of the router in one of the LAN slots. It also assigns this gateway when using the wire,
    192.168.1.254

    Have you reset the router by plugging it out?

    Restarted your computers after this?

    If the wired connection get the gateway address of 192.168.1.254 then this is the default gateway for your router for wireless connections too, try restarting the router and see how you get on, also make sure your dns is accurired automatically too.
