    I'm doing a research essay on Herceptin for a biology course and I came across this sentence:
    The HER2 protein is “a 185-kD transmembrane tyrosine kinase with homology to the epidermal growth factor receptor

    Can anyone translate that into usable English for me? I've looked up the words but I can't quite make an understandable sentence for it, and I can't leave it as is because it'd be obvious I just copied and pasted!

    The HER2 protein is “a 185-kD transmembrane tyrosine kinase" with
    a structural similarity to the "epidermal growth factor receptor"

    Can't help with the "technical names" though. But I found this
    "HER-2/neu, also known as c-erbB2 or HER-2, is a gene that has been shown to play a key role in the regulation of cell growth. The gene codes for a 185 kd transmembrane cell surface receptor that is a member of the tyrosine kinase family. HER-2 has been shown to be amplified in human breast, ovarian and other cancers."

    185kd = 185 kilodalton = the size of the molecule
    transmembrane means it crosses the cell membrane, some receptors are only on the outside, some are on the inside, some cross the membrane and carry outside stimuli into the cell and activate a cascade

    Tyrosine Kinase is an enzyme which is very important in cell signalling.

    Homology = similar to

    Epidermal growth factor is a molecule used in signalling to a cell to replicate itself in normal development, however in abnormal = cancer cells, the shutoff switch doesn't work (in certain cancers)

    receptor = molecule that can be stimulated by another protein to cause an action
