Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Should I install XP Pro instead of XP Home?

I'm running XP Home on my laptop. I have an XP Pro disc from work (it's legit, we have a volume licence).

    1. Are there any major benefits to installing XP Pro when everything's running smoothly at present?
    2. Can i just install XP Pro without uninstalling XP Home first?
    3. Any known problems/ glitches i should be wary of?

    Thanks.

Suspect that your workplace volume license doesn't cover home machines.

    but anyways,
    1. depends on what you use your laptop for. If not connecting to domain, then probably not really. Bit of security, allows you to switch off stuff that you can't touch in Home without an old hack http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/06/03/xp_hack/.

    2. Yes, but always with MS upgrades, the chance that registry entries & file permissions will remain in old state, possibly causing instability. And chance of failure, setup mistake wiping HDD.

It's only legit if they tick off a license of the number they are allowed to use at work - remember it's per machine not a per site license.

Anyway - PRO supports Dual Processor and Automated System Recovery (which is kinda usless unless you have multiple drives, and there are many other cloning utilities), NtBackup is installed by default in Pro but ntbackup.msi is on the CD somewhere. You don't need networking features.. Logons and account management are different.

The volume licence is for a school and allows all staff to install on home machines as well. A rare example of MS generosity.

I think I'll just leave well enough alone. Thanks for the help lads.

Also IIRC you would have to uninstall the SW if you changed school, and you can't "upgrade" PRO to HOME
