Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ah, I used to be a big fan but I saw them live a few times and they were rubbish! None of the harmonies.

I'm trying really hard to think of other bands like them, but nothing leaps to mind! Sufjan's Stevens (Come on, Feel the) Illinoise is a good listen and it's not a million miles away. I always hear people saying that Death Cab for Cutie have their similarities to them, but I think that's overstated, and they're definitely not as happy. Still, We Have the Facts is a great album anyway. Modest Mouse aren't completely off the mark either, but I don't really like them!

Basically, this post is pretty useless.

Best thing you can do (if you haven't already and assuming you have a Broadband connection) is set up an account on Pandora.com and then create "The Shins" Radio. Perfect for finding other bands with the same "musical qualities".

I'm a big fan of both Shins albums too. I hate trying to compare bands though (mainly because I'm really bad at it) but the other bands that I've been listening a lot to lately are...

    Architecture in Helsinki
    Broken Social Scene
    Elbow
    Gorky's Zygotic Mynci

None of which could be said to sound exactly like The Shins but all good bands and worth checking out if you don't know them already.

Oh and check out Sufjan Stevens like was previously mentioned, they're definitely worth it... especially for songs like 'They are Night Zombies...'

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Belle And Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister (or any of their pre 2003 stuff)
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

A lot of people seem to like The Decemberists too, but......... I don't

Ooooh and nearly forgot Clap Your Hands And Say Yea. Probably the cd I'd most reccommend if you're a shinsy fan

Heard a couple of A.C Newman tracks last night. One of which was very "Shinsy"

Yeah, AC Newman is class, as are his band "The New Pornographers" I suppose they would be classed as "Shinsy" too. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Rilo Kiley yet

If you like power pop try the following
Big Star (one of the ceaters of the genre)
    Teenage Fanclub (My Personal favorite)
The Posies (very good american power pop band)

I'm not sure what the full story is but either James Mercer was in another band or else The Shins just changed their name, but anyway there was a band before The Shins called Flake Music with James on lead vocals.

They had one album called When You Land Here, It's Time To Return. Good luck tracking it down though, can't even find lyrics online. Friend of mine has one copy of it and its fairly cheap looking, almost like a CD-R rather than a pro album. The quality of the records is also dreadful but imo its a great album, love the songs. There is one track on it called The Shins so I assume thats where the name came from.

On another note The Shins are an amazing band imo. Saw them at Oxegen 2 years ago and they were excellent. Considering hoppin over to London to see them in May.

Alot of bands that soundtrack The OC could be described as sounding like the Shins. James Mercer's solo stuff is excellent also.

Excellent film:D , do you have the soundtrack? There’s a plethora of new bands who cater for that type of genre. Listen to Jenny Huston’s Waiting Room on 2fm on Friday evening she plays all that sort of stuff.

    I am kloot
    Air
    Wolf Parade
    Viva Voce
    We Are Scientists
    Modest Mouse
    Death Cab for Cutie
    Broken Social Scene
    Stars
    Elbow
Clap your hands and say yeah!

Better than The Shins, in my opinion.
