    Hi Can anyone with IBB (or another 1MB service) please check your speed at this site. I've had IBB a few months now, no other broadband option, and I find alot of the time I might as well be on dial-up. At 4.30 in the morning I get great speeds but in the evenings or at weekends my speeds are awful.

    The site is>>http://testmy.net
    Select: DOWNLOAD TEST> Medium test-1013 KB please.
    And could you please post your results. Thanks.

    By the way I'm in Drogheda and on their 1MB Breeze option.

    I tested a few mins ago and here are the results.
    :::.. Download Stats ..:::
    Connection is:: 295 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB)
    Download Speed is:: 36 kB/s
    Tested From::
    http://testmy.net (server1)
    Test Time:: Mon Feb 13 18:16:03 UTC 2006
    Bottom Line:: 5X faster than 56K 1MB download in 28.44 sec
    Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 57.39 % of your hosts average (106.45)

    well i'm not with IBB but you're not alone, most people on ibb get awful speeds. IBB should be the very very last resort for most people. IBB put far too many people on their masts and rarely answer emails by the sounds of things. if you're not tied to a contract with them and have other broadband options, i'd get out as soon as possible tbh. breeze generally seems to be better than ripwave but there's still alot of people that get terrible speeds with it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

    I'd agree with ghostdancer. IBB should be the last option for people. Their breeze product is inconsistent and ripwave seems useless.

    You're the first IBB customer I've heard from Drogheda and I'm glad I put people off from buying it. You've confirmed my suspicions, there seems to be problems here as well as everywhere else.

    Go with Digiweb wireless for €35 per month or Net1 also for €35 but Net1 have a high install price of €349. Both have speeds of 512 kbps. I've Digiweb and the service is a bit erratic but I think this is due to branches in the way of the aerial. Net1 seem to have good service.

    If it is possible for you to get bb through a phoneline, you should. IBB have been poor for many people here.

    Could you try this link?:http://www.irishisptest.com

    This is based in Ireland and also tells you your upload speed.

    I am on a 2Mb download and here are my results:
    :::.. Download Stats ..:::
    Connection is:: 620 Kbps about 0.6 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB)
    Download Speed is:: 76 kB/s
    Tested From:: http://testmy.net (server1)
    Test Time:: Mon Feb 13 2006 21:19:03 GMT+0000 (GMT Standard Time)
    Bottom Line:: 11X faster than 56K 1MB download in 13.47 sec
    Diagnosis: Looks Great : 8.39 % faster than the average for host (42.73)
    Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-X8B4D26W9

    Are thses good or bad for a 2Mb connection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

    2 Mbps should be exactly that: 2 Mbps. 30% of your connection speed is not good. I think the diagnosis is based on the average result of people who use the site.

    Either way, I'd ignore the diagnosis reading. That's why I think www.irishisptest.com is better, because it is usually accurate and it also gives you an upload speed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭Scotty #

    OK tried Irishisptest and got 876 kbs. GREAT. So why does it seem so slow? and why the hugh difference between the two sites?

    This site seems to route badly to Ireland.I wouldn't take it at face value.

    Whilst we're on the subject of IBB - I've saved 20+ souls from being sent to IBB hell. :)

    IBB and the word ''speed'' appearing so closes together seems to some sort of contraction no?:rolleyes:

    I have never had good results with the testmy.net site with IBB (or any other irish providor) where at the same time I get (these days) fantastic results on IBB with this one.

    IBB could not possible call themselves an ISP infact they are not even a SP.

    I sadly sign up for a 12mth contract on Breeze home, I might as well just have burned the money.

    Over my twelve months the service work about 50% of the time, i called them, emailed them and wrote to them but no reply.

    Thankfully my contract is now over but I forgot to cancel my standing order wit the bank and even though I wrote to IBB to cancel the service and the mast was taken down they were still kind enough to keep taking money from my account.

    I can't possibly thank of anything good to say about IBB.

    I am amazed that the company is still viable.

    Potential customers be ware ..... do not attempt to signup, dial up is more faster and more dependable .... yes from my experience this is actually true.:(

    Well my speeds are good and my pings are good with IBB. But I cant stay on a game server for more than 2 mins and I get disconnected. I have around 6% packet loss at their ibis connection and I have told them that is where the problem is a month ago and still they have done nothing only made me jump through hoops sending them on more and more test results.

    Ahh good!! So its not just me then!! I have to tell you funny story though. I started this thread on Monday. On Tuesday I got a letter from IBB. At the top of the letter in BIG red letters it said FINAL NOTICE. I found this funny as its the first letter I've ever received from them. Anyway the letter says I owe IBB €255.84 and they are disappointed I have not updated my credit/laser card or Direct Debt information. It turns out I've never actually paid for my broadband....lol. It goes on to say I have 7 days to pay up or it will be passed on to their "debt collection dept."
    I rang them today and asked "what about my crap speeds?". After a load of jabbering the guy told me that even though I have a 1Mb line I am only guaranteed 128Kbps. "WHAT!!!. Less than 1/5th of what I'm paying for??" I said. He paused and then said "well yes". I asked him if he was buying €20 worth of petrol and the forecourt attendant said only €2 might go in but he'd still have to pay €20 would he still buy it? He didn't answer. Anyway after a bit of banter I told him I'd forward my bank details if he sent a techy out and he said he would. Not that it'll be any help.

    I also rang around to see if I could get anyone else. Digiweb are about €80 for 1mb(twice the price) wireless and €30 for land line 1mb but I'd have to get the phone line hooked up again and pay rental on that so not really worth it either. Smart said €35 for 3 Mb line, no contention ratio so always 3Mb, no line rental and will be in Drogheda in 4-5 months. Sounds good. Can anybody verify this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,235 ✭✭✭lucernarian

    I saw that Smart are coming to Drogheda in 2006 but I won't be holding my breath. Digiweb are very expensive for 1 Mbit but only €35 for 512 kbits.

    As regards arrival in Drogheda only Smart themselves as regards the rest that's pretty spot on unless you have a dodgy line.

    I wouldn't pay too much attention to those tests.

    I have a 4meg dsl line with digiweb. Rock solid. Irishisptest is telling me I have 2 megs and the others are telling me 1 but when I download from heanet I get my full 425kbps from my 4 megs.

    I ignore them almost entirely.
