    hey
I went from having starting issues (starter motor replaced, glow plugs etc) to now having real starting problems.

On a cold morning the thing just won't tick over, the AA could only offer to tow me to a garage

However I tried a push start down a hill and got it started in 2nd gear, and this has worked ever since but its a right pain and I look like a car thief when its dark out:D

Anyone know why this is happening? Its the 1.8 Turbo Diesel '96 Mondeo

    cheers :)

I had one of these and a solenoid in the fuel injection system packed in which prevented it starting sometimes. Cost €220 to replace and only Ford main dealer was able to diagnose - two other garages couldn't find the fault.

The fuel cut off solenoid could well be the problem alright, but then it shouldnt start in any circumstance. My one leaked (but stayed working). I got a geniune delphi one for about €60 from Eurodiesel, and fitted myself (3 min job).

When you say it wont tick over.. do you mean it wont crank, or it wont start?

It's cranking alright but just wont start without push start. When the engine is warm it'll start on the button :confused:

I was thinking I'd have to bring it to Ford but for a car of its age I'm not spending loadsa €€€€ on it :o

from what you describe it sounds like the heater plugs. if their not working the car would'nt start when cold and when run started would not want to tick over and be very smoky. i'm amazed the AA man did'nt diagnose this straight away. the other less likely reason is an air leak into the fuel system which would allow the fuel to leak back into the tank overnight. a lot of older cars used to suffer from this when the diaphragm in the primer pump would degrade with age and allow air to enter the system.

    Sounds glow-pluggy alright.

The fuel cut off solenoid on mine took three months to die and I never knew if it would start - warm or cold, but eventually it stopped and I had to get it towed.

Keep away from Ford I'd say. Ask around about a good independent garage. The Endura engines have been around so long now that any experienced mechanic/diesel specialist will know what is prone to going wrong.

i had a '94 1.8 td (same engine as yours) & the fuel solenoid was leaking & caused simillar problems to yourself ie non starting,
you said you replaced the glow plugs? ,then they should be ok.
did you have this problem before your replaced them??
also mine failed the nct on emissions, later found out the the injector tips needed replacing - 1 was seized .
there is a diesel specialist on clonkeen road near ~Dunnes cornelcourt.
he is brilliant & works from home. i forget his name though:( .

If the glow plugs were replaced it shouldn't be the bproblem, however they may not be working because the glow plug relay is faulty. If the plugs are tested under the bonnet, i.e wired directly it will mask the problem !

Does the glow plug light come on and can you hear a loud relay click when it goes out ?? If not then thats your fault !

The pump solendoid doesn't know whether the engine is hot or cold so its behavior would be totally erratic, I doubt thats it !

Fuel leak back shouldn't be a problem with this system but always a possibility!
