Grit getting into washing machine.

Hi All

hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction on this one.
Have a Hotpoint Aquarius WD440. Problem is, grit or sediment is getting into the filter and wrecking the filter. The machine fills up with water even when it is off. :mad: Hotpoint have had to replace the filter twice, which of course means I have had to take a day off work twice.

They advised me to run a few buckets off the water supply to try and flush all the grit. The tank in the attic is huge and it also feeds a duplex below me so I don't think that is a solution.

So does anyone know if it is possible to but 3/4" hoses and filters and shut off valves separatly? I was thinking about having it so the water supply would go into a filter before going to the machine. I could then clean out the filter every so often myself. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this?

Yes just ask for a 10" filter housing and a wound polypropylene filter.
it will take 3/4" fittings and you can fit a valve or stopcock upstream of it.
The filters are very common and should be about €5 or less. The housing should be €20 or less.

My question is how exactly does it all fit togeater. I got the product specs from Screwfix for the filter but it doesn't say anything about what size connections it would take. By any chance would you still know the URL of what you bought.

I am not sure that Screwfix sells to Ireland.
but what I think you need is the filter housing, 2 x 3/4" to 3/4" male fittings and 1 3/4" to what ever piping you have in your washing machine cold feed.

Mach hose

Screw the males into the housing with PTFE tape.
attach the inlet pipe to the first 3/4" fitting with whatever adaptor you need probably 1/2"to 3/4"then on the outlet side of the filter housing attach the washing machine feed directly to the 3/4" male fitting.
You will also probably need to support the filter as they weigh about a kg or so when they are full.
