    about 1 year ago i had eircom home starter 512/128 which was then upgraded to 2mb/128.i disconnected from them because theyre latency was poor.i saw theyre home proffesional today which is 3mb/384,would this product have better latecy than my original or is latency just based on theyre network?

    it depends if your connection is working right or not.. some people who are upgraded are getting amazing pings on home professional all the time, my mate gets 10ms to eircom and 19ms to jolt all the time but mine are a different story completley.. this is what i get:

    ping www.eircom.net

    Pinging home.eircom.net [159.134.198.138] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 159.134.198.138: bytes=32 time=194ms TTL=60
    Reply from 159.134.198.138: bytes=32 time=300ms TTL=60
    Reply from 159.134.198.138: bytes=32 time=243ms TTL=60
    Reply from 159.134.198.138: bytes=32 time=386ms TTL=60

    Ping statistics for 159.134.198.138:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 194ms, Maximum = 386ms, Average = 280ms

    C:\Documents and Settings\Barry>ping www.jolt.co.uk

    Pinging www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=324ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=226ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=385ms TTL=59
    Reply from 82.133.85.65: bytes=32 time=390ms TTL=59

    Ping statistics for 82.133.85.65:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 226ms, Maximum = 390ms, Average = 331ms

    I complained to eircom about his and they said they cant file a fault on my line just because i got bad pings.

    The latency was never poor with Eircom, but it's generally better now for some reason.

    This is what it looks like on a working Eircom connection:

    Pinging nad-diag.online.scee.com [217.18.19.250] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 217.18.19.250: bytes=32 time=38ms TTL=248
    Reply from 217.18.19.250: bytes=32 time=32ms TTL=248
    Reply from 217.18.19.250: bytes=32 time=31ms TTL=248
    Reply from 217.18.19.250: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=248

    Ping statistics for 217.18.19.250:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 38ms, Average = 32ms

    does eircoms dsl depend on where you live for ping quality?what package have you got?

    Sorry, I know this is off topic but what is Latency. I have a psp and when playing it using eircom broadband it cuts off, or will disconnect during a game.

    Thats probably your wireless connection between the PSP and the Eircom wireless BB router crapping out rather than your actual broadband connection crapping out.

    Latency is basically response time. I.e. the time it takes for a bit of data (a "packet") to get from your computer (i.e. your PSP), to a server on the internet, and back again. Measured in milliseconds.

    Ok thanks. So I presume it is better to have higher latency for gaming than to have lower? The quicker the response time will be.

    smaller = lower = better e.g. 20ms

    bigger = higher = worse e.g. 670ms

    Typical LAN in a home network is less than 1ms. Typical correctly configured wireless = 2ms (to PC on wired LAN)

    Gaming wants less than 100ms = 1/10th of a second

    Hard to get less than 800ms on Satellite (almost one second), IMPOSSIBLE to get less than 500ms on Satellite (half a second), thus Satellite no good for games.

    Eircom turned interleaving on after the upgrades

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

    Maybe you should have posted in the giant upgrade thread instead of dragging back up a 2 and a half year old thread about a completely different upgrade.

    they've set the interleving to a very high level indeed, much higher than whats on their business packages, resulting in pings that are much worse than the ISDN line I had many years ago. Oddly enough this has not effected my xbox live at all, played cod4 and it still plays great, getting 4 green bars most of the time.

    they've set interleaving to the HIGHEST level they can

    confirmed by DMT - see screenshot

    I use Eircom small business pack and the pings have increased by 150+ ob this too just so you know

    I read somehwer that Eircom said that they were gonna work on improving the pings, where did Eircom say this?
    Also they've set the interleving to the highest, for whatever reason they've done this I cant see why they would go back on this in a few weeks time, I feel that the decision eircom made is here to stay unfortunately.

    I think my pings went up slightly after the upgrade. How can I tell how much interleaving is being used on my line?

    if u send them an email askin why the pings have increased they will send you an email saying they are working on decreasing the pings and will be happy to inform you bla bla

    AFAIK they did it because interleaving helps to stabilise connections which are having difficulty synching at the new higher speeds. The rumoured plan is to reduce interleaving once the rollout is complete.
    But I see your point, if 95% of users don't complain/notice the latency then they'll just leave it and pat themselves on the back.

    shame

    there backbone cant handle the higher speeds without forcing high interleaving on

    what a well planned and thought out upgrade.

    Has anyone got DMT to work on a netopia?

    It connects for me but after getting 2/3 done it fails saying too many errors.
