I wish I was called for Jury duty a high profile case would do nicely getting to stay in a hotel (room service) for weeks all expense paid "break" and Id keep disagreeing about the verdict to shake things up a bit

I'm probably the anti-helmsley then. I'd try to get out of it by fair means and then failing that I'd just pay the fine rather than turn up.

i only work saturday nights so i dont think i will be entitled to any money from work, i thought the courts may cover my petrol and parking everyday

I drove from Waterford to Kilkenny return every day for a week and didn't get paid a cent for petrol when I did my jury duty, I asked but was told no. I even brought 2 jurors up and down with me (neither offered any money feckers). You only get paid by work.

I wouldn't have minded so much but the case was about a €50 barrel of dirty oil that was allegedly lifted, ffs I spent more than that going up and down, and they paid for lunch every day with a garda escort, must have cost a fortune :rolleyes:

The did cover parking though, we had to get our tickets validated.

Did Jury Service in March, amazed I was called because I am a wheelchair user. Got called on the 3rd day. Jury dismissed after half an hour allegedly because one of my fellow jury members knew one involved in the case. However 2 days later it was reported in the Metro that a case was dismissed because a wheelchair user couldnt get into the jury box, coincidence I don't think so. Got a letter of apology from the Court Service. Wouldnt put me off doing it again, I've always wanted to pretend to be Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men.

They don't do that anymore. I did jury service in December and the judge told us this. He said it was inconveniencing people too much and costed a lot also.

No expenses paid. However if you have to miss work because of jury service your employer is obliged to pay you for that. The jury office provides an attendance sheet at the end of the trial on request.

So out of curiosity - if your details have not been updated on the electoral roll, and no-one who lives at the old address knows you (i.e. not family) - then you could be summonsed, not realize it, subsequently fined - then be in further trouble because the fine would be sent to the old address?

edit: as further q - if people leave themselves say on the electoral register 'home' but live in dublin - then they are also liable for being called up in their home county?

Yes, a person I know got called in Dublin after moving to Roscommon. She got off, I presume you get off because of that.

Bring a book to study if you think your college work will be affected.

I did it and was randomly selected twice, which is very unlikely considering most people dont get selected once. The defense/prosecution objected to me sitting in the jury both times. The only reason i can think of why they would object to me twice (just based on looking at me) is that i was miles younger than anyone else there, as i was only 20 at the time. Same will probably happen to you

Depends what kinda case it's for.

If it's a case of a traveller stealing a bloody washing machine or something, I'd cry off for being a student.

If it was a murder or something interesting, go for it!

Ah yes, justice may be blind and all, but no need to go on the jury for boring cases!:D

Got called for Jury Duty a couple of years ago, ended up on a case for 3 weeks.
I'd recommend everyone does it if you can- It was a pretty interesting experience...also free lunch in the Brazen head every day and 2 weeks (paid) off work so a win win situation really!

Actually ending up going out with a fellow juror....love blossoms in the strangest places!!

Pretty easy to get of it though..there were seriously lame excuses used when i was there!!

I got a letter as well. This will be my third time being called.. the first time I managed to get off it, the 2nd time court was cancelled that morning.
It never crossed my mind I might have to do it for a few weeks. That'd be a huge hassle. If you were called and it was cancelled are you exempt from doing it again?

It always works in pissing off the bewigged "lords" in the courts of this republic.

Alternatively just send back the form with a tick in the "I'm washing my hair that day" box.

If you want to get off jury service simply indicate on the form that you have been treated for any form of mental illness.

Even if you were once prescribed anti-depressants you are ineligible for jury service.

You don't have to produce a cert, as you don't have to been diagnosed by a psychiatrist or anything as sophistaced as that.

Sad but true.
