    From rte.ie:

Newcastle United's Stephen Carr is to return to the Republic of Ireland squad, despite having announced his retirement last October following Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

However, an invitation from new manager Steve Staunton, and a meeting with Ireland international football consultant Bobby Robson, has tempted Carr to change his mind and is set to return to the Republic of Ireland Squad.

Carr announced his retirement from international football last October. He has not figured for Newcastle in over four months due to a persistent groin injury

We have about as much need for Carr as a hole in the head, We have Finnan and Stephen Kelly, also Joey O'Brien!
Why do we need 4 right backs?

Yeah I dont think he is needed too badly but he is an experienced player who is still only 29. Worth having in the squad imo

Good luck to him - he made his bed let him sleep in it, wouldn't have him back

I'd be fairly happy with this if it meant Finnan was used more as a left back. The only left back we have is Ian Harte and have 2 or 3 decent right backs.

Are there any left backs coming through eirebhoy?
I haven't heard of any, but you are far more up-to-date with Irish players abroad.

i wouldn't take him back, there are better players playing that position, he's no keane that we could really use by coming out of retirment. outragiously average

leave him gone, leave him gone!

he's useless...finnan is the chief...if only Brian Kerr could have seen that :(

no need for carr as finnan is one of the best right backs in england if not the best.

Finnan has a decent left foot so would go well at left-back, so Carr's return might be a decent move for us. As eirebhoy said we're a bit stuck at left-back at the moment. Finnan and Duff down the left sounds tasty though.

no not at all, harte is a far better player than carr, as is finann so carr is a reserve

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

O'Shea and Duff link up well down the left.
Finnan is much much better than Carr, and Carr is really annoying for Ireland, cause it means people think Finnan should play on the right wing some times, which is annoying as hell.

Finnan is a brilliant right back, who's ability is sacrificed to accomodate Carr. Finnan should be playing right back for Ireland.

Carr has been woeful and passionless for us for years.

we should have finnan right back, dunne and o'shea centre backs and harte left back

harte doesn't have the pace or the concentration. Good dead ball player, but not a lot else

    Carr ----Dunne---Butler/ o Brien
    Finnan

is the best option we have at the moment i feel.
And yes that is Paul Butler from leeds.

Paul Butler.......you are joking??? 45 Minutes for the Republic, at fault for two goals, never involved again and decided to declare for Wales!!!!

Finnan played agaisnt Switzerland at left full and constantly switched the ball onto his right. Forget Carr definately. Finnan has a European cup winners medal as a right full and kelly of Spurs seems decent. Harte is the best option for left full even though he's a bit dodgy. He does offer something from corners and a major contribution from Free's.

I dont see what he hopes to achieve by comig back - Finnan has the right-back position for himself, IMO.

    And don't forget Doyle.

LMAO, if I seen that ful back line I would sack the manager. You mean O'Brian from Pompey? because as already said O’Brien is a central Midfielder which of course you knew:rolleyes: again LMAO

How could he declare for Wales after playing for Ireland?

Butler was called into squads after that game, but didn't make any more appearances. He was at fault for 2 goals against the Czechs, but it was JAn Koller, who had a good 8 inches on him who scored. Having said all that I wouldn't have him near an Ireland squad, we have better players in that position playing consistently at a higher level.

You are only ruled out if you have a competivite cap for a country. Friendlies dont count. Johnson(cant remember first name), declared for Scotland even though he had 8 Senior Jamica caps.

I think I made a mistake with Butler and Wales(sorry). What other squads was he called into? I only remember being called up for a B international.

Surely he means Andy O'Brien? You know the guy, he has over 20 caps for us already.

You can't play at senior level for one country and then play for other. I thought Johnson was not eligible in the end for scotland

Friendlies at underage level don't count but I'm certain friendlies at senior level do

What?!! He never declared for anyone else as its against FIFA regulations. As for Butler he is playing well at Leeds and if he was 2 years younger I would definitely have him in the squad based on his current form. He is a better player than Breen for starters.

I think his time has passed now though so I would bring the two young lads, McShane and McCarthy, into the squad now.

Carr returns to Irish set up

    So what!

you should always play your best players in their best position. that means finnan should be at right back which is clearly his best position.

The ability to use his left foot doesn't mean he is at home on the left side. I'm fully two footed and played mostly on the left, put me on the right and I just don't feel at home - you get used to which side you need to show the attacker to, which side to drop your shoulder to etc.

Left full is clearly a problem position for us, but putting finnan there means not utilising him properly (he always cuts back in to his right as above) and also having a right full who is not quite as good as him. Stephen Kelly has played a fair bit at both left and right full...fingers crossed he gets a chance to progress cos he could do a job for us at left full.

As for Carr, I never saw any pride in the Irish jersey from him and he made a mockery of us when he left. True, you need your best players and on merit he deserves a place in the squad, but no more. I'd have him warming the bench for every game for the next few years, only getting a game if both finnan and o'brien are injured. That'd learn him ;)
