Jeez what a shock, it's a Champion's League thread and it still turns into a United vs Liverpool flame-war.

Gerrard is unlikely to start tonights game if what I've just heard is true - possible strain!

My best guess with that rumour in mind.

    Reina
    Finnan--Cara--Hyypia-Riise
    Hamann
    Alonso---Sissoko
    ---Garcia
    Kewell
    Crouch

    Mike.

I fear for Arsenal tbh. This tie has come at the worst possible time for them.

I would love to see the 2 full teams come face to face but alas its not to be. The season could be over tomorrow night. Hopefully Henry will show the world what a great player he still is.

    Liverpool team announced

    Reina
    Finann--Cara-Hyypia-Riise
    Garcia-Sissoko-Alonso-Kewell
    ---Morientes---Fowler

    Subs:-Dudek-Gerrard-Cisse-Crouch-Hamann-Traore-Warnock

I'll never try to second guess rafa again! (until the next time)

    Mike.

Well it's their turn I guess - defence got the winner against Arsenal and a forward got the winner against united. Unless Rena comes forward and bags one.

Wonder if Fowler will be on?

Ah! they are taking turns to score that explains it.;)

Obviously if Gerrard is out it will be a huge blow for Liverpool and there could well be an upset on the cards.

Someone said earlier that they though Benfica would not be able to cope with Crouches ariel Power. I suggest the have another look at Mr Crouches Ariels prowess, for such a tall player he is a brutal header of the ball and before anyone points out teh obvious, I know he scored from a header last weekend but it wasn't exactly a towering one was it?

Stevie rested or bit of an injury?
Rather Didi than Momo beside Xabi tbh.

Robbie to score first. :v: Gwan!

Have a bad feeling about Arsenal tho..can see they getting a pure hiding tonight. :-/

    lol, me too

i would also prefer hamann to sisoko, though he had a good game, hope he can reproduce it and give the ball a way a little less still

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Sissoko deserves his place on recent performances imo. He was very good against Arsenal, really got about. Didn't see the whole United game, but heard he did likewise.

I think it is an absolutely massive mistake to leave Gerrard out of this game if he is fit, and if he is injured, it is a massive massive loss. Benficas strength is almost entirly in their midfield, it is top quality, and they have lost their league form because of the strikers and defenders.
Here is liverpools chance to prove to everyone they aren't a one man team, but this is a huge huge huge loss.

Vicous tackle just there by Luis Garcia, could have been a red in europe with those studs showing.

Come on Real Madrid , I hope they do a job tonight.

Arsenal the better team at the moment. Could be 2-0 up already.

Edit: Could be 3-0, really should have put one of these chances away. Madrid are ignoring the standard tactics people play against Arsenal these days and in turn Arsenal are having no problems penetrating their defence.

Early doors yet, pity to see woody go off.

    Woodgate is off injured, hamstring.

    Good start by the Gooners.

Whatr the hell did kewell go down for there, he was through for the cross.

On another note, I hate the amount of high balls put up the middle.

Ballack scores a screamer. Then again, he had all the time in the World to strike it.

    Bayern 1-0 Milan

    Henry should have scored there.

Its the last ball that Arsenal are fecking up at the moment....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Kinda disappointing from a neutral perspective, Madrid haven't been at the races. Arsenal will be delighted that they've matched them, but they have squandered at least 3 good chances.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Benifica are quite fiesty but Liverpool have soaked them up like a super absorbant sponge so far. Finnan has been exellent, even the last min free kick was'nt one in my book. Fowler has had some good touches but he needs players in very close attendence for his work to pay dividends.

    Mike.

    0-0 ht 'pool v benfica.

Poor game. Better team I feel but we're lacking a spark upfront. Defence is solid as is midfield.
Pity Momo went off injured but now Didi and Xabi in the centre.

Fowler and Mori are getting some nice touches but too far away from goal.

Garcia was very lucky in the first minute. Rash tackle to say the least.

Hope the second half is better.

Madrid have been awful so far and Arsenale really should be at least 2 goals up. All I can remember from Madrid is a tame shot from Ronaldo and a free kick from roberto Carlos that was straight at the keeper. Arsenal on the other hand have had at least 3 golden chances that they have missed and I get the funny feeling that it may come back to haunt them. An away goal would be a huge advantage.

Liverpool match is pretty poor but I still think Benfica will get at least a draw like I originally said. Delighted for Bayern, im a big fan of theirs. I also tiped Lyon to win the entire competition and so far they are doing well with the score 0-0 against PSV.

Don't forget about Senderos' concentrational slip that let Beckham in, Lehmann made a good save. Should have been punished though.

How is diving and playackting supposed to be stamped out when idiotic refereeing is supporting it? Gattuso just flung himslef to the ground pretending he was punched by Ballack. The ref obviously wasnt convinced as he didnt even give Ballack a talkign to. Needless to say, Gattuso was straight up as soon as he saw Ballack wasn't getting booked, so why no card for Gattuso? bloody ridiculous.

Stevie G coming on. He shoudl have been on earlier to stick a few decent crosses on Fowlers head. How the hell is a striker supposed to score when all they get is balls lumped up the middle? does Rafa realise he had Moro and robbie on and not Ciise and Crouch?

Lovely lofted free kick, Liverpool once again concedded from a free kick 2 v 2 at the back, total lapse in concentration

TV3 summed it up really: Liverpool lost to an inadequate team.

Really yet another instance of Liverpool taking the foot off the pedal too early, a la the United game, and a few others in recent memory.
