    I write around 100 cheques a year.

It beggars belief that two people don't know what a cheque is.

    Losers.

Yes, I have one, though probably only write about 2 cheques a year!

I usually use the Mastercard nowadays, or just straight cash :)

Why would anybody buy drafts instead? They are expensive and immediate! I use on-line banking where poss.

I just dug mine out for a look - I've written two cheques from it. They were both to buy my last car and were written over two years ago.

I've no intention of getting rid of it, though online or credit card are my main methods of payment.

The only reason I don't still have my original cheque book from '99 is the Euro thing.

I think that if you surrender your cheque book you get the stamp duty back.
Currently this is EUR 0.15 per cheque, so its hardy worth while but what if....

you waited a few years until it went up to say EUR 0.25 per cheque and then surrendered the book? would you be payed the current rate and make a profit (inflation aside)?

I have gone to having 3 credit cards (52,000 of credit) to a debit card and personal cheque book and plan to keep it that way.

Somethings have to be paid for by draft/cheque and not everybody is issued with a chequebook

    very slightly OT

Do any of you have the new Bank of Ireland cheque books.

I challenge any man, woman or child to take out a cheque without ripping the cheque !!

ffs, there's no stub at all, fecking ridiculous.

so you keep records with a builtin whitepage carbon copy?
is that a bank of ireland book with "business cheque" written in the MICR font

Nope. It would be handy on occasion, but my fear and loathing for talking to bank people is such that I haven't gotten around to it.

I asked in AIB today about getting a cheque book, it would take 2 weeks max, and if you apply in a branch other then the one in which the account is held then your written application is sent to your branch by internal post*

*my experience of AIB's internal post is that things tend to get strategically "lost" is they are not desirable to the receiver
