The Beetle uses the same platform as the MkIV Golf so I would assume that it uses the same 1.6 litre engine which is found in the Golf, that was an 8 valve 102bhp unit. The same unit is still made by VW today. The 1.4 litre 75bhp unit which appeared in the Beetle from around 2002 is a 16 valve unit alright.

I believe the sr is a 16valve engine. vw went back to 8valves in the mark 5:rolleyes:

Well according to the Beetle specification on http://www.volkswagen.ie the only 1.6 litre available is the 102bhp 8 valve unit.

Aye madness isnt it! i think this is the new 06 model year beatles, a friend of mine bought a new golf 1.6 in 2001 and it was a 16 valve for sure, at some point vw switched back to 8valves. from another post im led to believe the unit labelled sr is indeed a 16valve.

I don't think a modern 1.4 Beetle was ever made

Check out http://www.volkswagen.ie and http://www.carzone.ie. The 1.4 has been available in Ireland since around the middle of 2002. The new Beetle uses the MkIV Golf running gear so it uses most of the same engines.

thanks y'all, i think i heard it is the same engine and gear box as a golf mark IV not sure about the new beetles.

you'd imagine that if it was a 16v then they would mention it, unless SR is their way of stating it.
