Yes, yes it was my fault :o . I did fill in the cracks with some fire cement, put down a couple of small files but the cement didn't seem to "stick" for the fireback and is beginning to fall out again.

Is there anything else I can do/use to repair the cracks for a little longer? I know I'll have to replace it eventually but would like to put off that event for as long as possible.

    Hi Doc,

Did you wet the fireback before applying the fire cement ?, maybe if you gently rake out the cracks and wet the joints with a paint brush allowing the water to soak into the adjoining sections the fire cement will get a bite and hold a better for you.

I didn't TBH - haven't lit a fire for a couple of days and will be away for the weekend so I'll give it a try and see how it goes (I didn't know about the wetting bit)

    Thanks Pete
