Waterford garda guilty of harassing woman

    23 February 2006 19:40

A Waterford garda has been found guilty by a jury at Waterford circuit criminal court of harassing a woman and stealing underwear from a clothes line in her back garden.

39-year-old Anthony Fennelly was charged with harassing 28-year-old Amanda Cox in November 2003 and of stealing two items of her underwear from a washing line in September of that year.

The jury took three hours to find him guilty. Garda Fennelly had denied the charges.

During the trial, the court heard that garda Fennelly had first made unwarranted advances towards his wife's colleague at a christmas party in 2001.

He later apologised but 18 months later in November 2003 he stole underwear from the clothes line in the back garden of her home.

The court also heard that he had photocopied flyers with Amanda Cox's name and number and distributed them around phone boxes.

The prosecution said she received a number of unusual calls and when she questioned one of the callers, he said there was a flyer in a phone box saying she was available for sex.

Yesterday Anthony Fennelly took the stand and admitted flirting with Amanda Cox at a christmas party in 2001 but denied photocopying and distributing handbills and also denied stealing her underwear.

He said the only reason he told colleagues that he had stolen the underwear was to avoid a criminal investigation.

Judge Alice Doyle said the court would sit again on 2 May when she would consider a date for sentencing.

    Correct verdict in my opinon.

Of course if he wasn't a Garda and instead was a normal joe soap then it would have never made it to court and the women would still be getting harassed as we speak.

The only reason the national media were interested in this story is because he was a guard , this type of thing goes on all over the place and you'd never hear about it
