Naturally I am going for Man U, the Carling Cup may mean nothing to big clubs, but its one trophy we haven't won in a while now.

    United not a big club?!

Love to see Wigan win it, but go with united just. Be very close though.

I didnt really mean to say that.

Im gonna go for Wigan. They have got some of their injured players back again and are starting to play good fottball again. This is the biggest game in the clubs history and I think they will want it that bit more than Man U. A Wigan win in a high scoring game.

have to agree with mike. Think Wigan will go onto win it. It'd be a great achievement.

1-1 draw, go to penalties with van der sar saving it for united.

I cannot see Wigan winning. I think that Ferguson will have his team motivated enough to beat them. I mean, it's their only shot at silverware.

...I'd like Wigan to win though! I love Paul Jewel. I think he has done a fantastic job there since his disappointing days at Sheffield Wednesday and earlier relegation season at Bradford.

Even if Wigan lose, they will still be in the UEFA cup. Man Utd have both the better talent and as much insentive an Wigan, so I'll back United.

Wigan have to win it to get into the UEFA. If Man Utd win it the UEFA cup place goes to the league.

You're right actually - That rule was only brought in this season or last season. So the loser gets nothing but reminiscence of a failed cup campaign! ...ouch

Wigan because it might as well be the CL final for them. i've no doubt it means the world to em

tbh, I'd like Wigan to win it. This could be their only chance at Silverware in their lives, and I think as a team, they deserve somethign this season(besides playing in Europe which they should get anyway) Also it will give lower teams an incentive to actually play football and not just be boring as hell all the time, as Wigan have showed it works. Also the Carling Cup isn't really that important, and I'd really like to see Rossi and Pique get a run out tomorrow.

That said, once the match starts I'll be totally behind United, but until then, go Wigan

    United. 2-1.

There's no chance of Rossi and Pique playing, because Ferguson puts a lot more importance on this game than Phb!

Hard to make a prediction without seeing the teams. Is Rio fit? I wonder will he play at centre half or centre midfield?

A lot will depend on how Wigan approach the game. Its probably the biggest game in the history of that club, and the biggest game in the career of the manager and 7 or 8 of the players. If they approach it nervously and cautiously (which would be understandable) they will certainly lose.

On the other hand if they go out with the attitude that they are better than this United team and they are going to outplay them, then they'll have a chance. Roberts is dangerous up front, and I'm sure will cause the United defence problems - though not as much as Rvn and Rooney will cause the old heads at the back for Wigan - assuming RvN and Rooney get the ball. Midfield is the key - we'll all see if Graham Kavanagh is as good as some people think, or as bad as other people think.

Your posts never cease to amaze.

    I know, I'm a puzzle.

As for the game itself, I think United will be too strong for them. Specifically, I think Ronaldo and Park will be too strong for them. This is by far our best two wingers, and once Fergie realises this(he hasn't yet), United will be a lot more effective as a whole.

    3-0 man utd

If United match wigan physicaly then hopefully the bit of extra class will shine through. I hope ferdinand is playing. Vidic and Brown looked a bit dodge last week against pool

    Prediction: 2-1 to MU!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

Man Utd all the way, Wigan's form is closer to that of a mid-bottom half team than a mid-top half team. While I admire Jewell and what he's doing, it really is asking that bit too much for him to win a cup in Wigan's inaugural year in the Premier League.

I think Vidic will be a good signing, though he does need time to settle into the squad and i think brown and Ferdi deserve their place if they're available.
Wes Brown in particlular has been in the best form of his career this year.

I'm a little bit worried about Evra. It took all of 2 games for opposition teams to realise that he struggles with the high ball in on top of him. He had a nightmare against City but was very effective going forward against liverpool & Bolton. He also seems to link up very well with Ronaldo.I'd say Paul jewel would identify him as a weakness were he to start. He'll toughen up and come good eventually.

Both will be good players I have no doubt, seem to be struggling a bit getting used to the up and at them approach that is part of the PL game. I usually say give a foreign player 12 months before you start to rate them,. Usually takes them that long to settle in the area/team/league.

I think it's a case of Wigan wanting it more, but United needing it more. With that, I expect a hearty Wigan display but I think United will shade it. And I mean shade, I don't expect it to be a repeat of the league result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

if wigan take the lead, i'd expect utd to win as utd are best coming from behind on a big stage.

if utd take an early lead, i'd be worried that complacency will set in and they'll never actually take wigan seriously.

    i'll go 4-2 utd

I'd love to see Wigan win it, but I think the chances of that are somewhere between slim and none!! But we can live in hope...

history sudjests that utd will walk it but its been a strange season in the uk, its gat all the makings of a real fairy tail story, the old guard being turned over by the young upstarts, wait 5 year and it'll be a made for TV movie

I reckon united will be fast out of the blocks and will score in the first twenty minutes. They'll probably go on to win it.

I'm going to go for 3-1 for united.

I think United will win it but I'd prefer to see Wigan win it because they are the underdog.

    I'm going for 2-0 United.

Well Paddy Power have made my decision for me Wigan are 5/1 to win in 90 mins.

    Cmon Wigan :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    5/1?
thats great odds, I might take that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,935 ✭✭✭eyerer

hope wigan, but logic has to be with united

wigan to be 3 down at half time with van nistelrooy to miss the deciding penalty in a shootout

If you put you're first bet with Betfred they'll give you 100% on top of your winnings up to £100. Put £20 on with Betfred and get £200 back. :)

    hopefully wigan

    probably united :)

Even though I voted Wigan cos I went with what I want not what I think, it's hard to see past Uts on this one. Fergie is going to want to win something this season, as he can't really afford to go 2 seasons empty handed, so I'd imagine they'll be all out for this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭MonkeyTennis

I think Wigan may just want it more. I have the feeling that Utd think the trophy is 'below' them.

    Then again Im highly biased
