    One other question,

Why does this speed test also give such a poor result for a 5Mb netsource line?

If you asking do NTL peer with INEX yes they do.

    much the same

    Pinging ftp.heanet.ie [193.1.193.64] with 32 bytes of d

    Hi Brendan,

That traceroute will drastically change soon ;)

I can see the problem though, smart's ISP pick up global crossing in the <edit> US </edit> and not in Ireland. Glbx' transatlantic pop is on the same DC floor we host in, hence why we are so quick into anyone using glbx out of dublin. It is a less optimal route I have to admit, but it will change in the not too distant future.

On the netsource line, it should report very well. e.g we have a 4mb line in the office in carlow and it reports the speed exactly as the same as what I can pull stuff off heanet.

Can you provide a trace from there too? ta.

i totally agree with you, but then again that would mean that this Board would be practically empty........

They should always be testing from multiple sites anyway.

obviously he is trying to show that with ping results like that you cannot get accurate readings

traffic on a site directly affects your connection to the site, therefore if a load of people are doing tests at the same time it will show slower then if there is low traffic

    this is basics ntlbell

They are HIS ping results tho, mine on 3/4 ISP's are all fine to blacknight, so showing just HIS pings is not proving much, except a problem with HIS ISP's peering, which is what he was trying to disprove.

I should really learn the basics after all these years, I've obviosuly hidden it well from my employer

today I get 3.10 Mb up 225 Kbs down. This is a 5M 512K netsource line with no other users.

    Here's this route
    # tracepath www.irishisptest.com
     1?: [LOCALHOST] pmtu 1492
     1: adsl (212.17.55.97) asymm 101 0.772ms

     8: morgana.blacknight.ie (87.252.192.15) asymm 7 79.784ms reached
         Resume: pmtu 1492 hops 8 back 7

    and a curl
    # curl -o /dev/null ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/centos/4.2/isos/i386/CentOS-4.2.ServerCD-i386.iso
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Curr.
Dload Upload Total Current Left Speed
      4 558M 4 24.9M 0 0 505k 0 0:18:51 0:00:50 0:18:01 515k

definitely better peering on this path

It's only really a problem if you're an ISP and it dramatically misrepresents your customers' connection speeds.

I think it's a brilliant site. I used to have 3 Meg NTL (now 1 Meg). Religiously use it to test it - never a bother. Interesting one - friend of mine had a desktop PC running on w98SE - NTL showing 1.25M on a 2 meg. XP laptop connected to same line consisitently clocking 1.95M. So don't necessarily go blaming the www.irishisptest.com;)

Also I'm guessing it may deter random people hammering the application if they see they have to register?
