Hi i've had ntl cable for about 6 months, for the first 2/3 months the connection was great for gaming ie. counter-strike but for maybe the last 3 months it has been utter ****e. My ping is so unstable pinging from 30-85 and constantly changing which makes playing games a no go at all

Heres an exapmle of my tracert to boards.ie

    Tracing route to boards.ie
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Any help at all will be nice, as i have rang ntl's custumor service and you can guess what reply i got there.

can you show a few more traces to multiple sites?

    Wing,

I had eircom dsl and moved to NTL 3 weeks ago. I was really disappointed by the constant fluctuating pings since day one of installation. The last 3 days seem pretty good though. It still fluctuates but to a lower level. Dunno if this will be permanent or its just a good run.

A couple of people reckon its pre-upgrade probs and that it happened last year. Can't say if thats true but I had eircom in Jan and it got pretty bad a few weeks before their upgrade, was grand after.

Its been suggested to me to sit tight til after and see how it settles down as complaining to NTL now will get me nowhere. If/when they upgrade and if its still bad ill start complaining to them

( by the way your traces look really familiar... its what ive been looking too, often the biggest hops are appearing in NTLs own servers )

One other thing ive noticed is BF2 is really affected by it but HL2/DOD/CS arent

What has been advised to me is to use pingplotter, get some charts of the problem to build up information to go to technical support to help get it fixed...

At least it could highlight the issues you are having and might help your case

    ... u could try this...

Mind you ive been told im wasting my time with NTL as regards getting them to sort this out...

You can gather these and send them in, and get others to do the same, my guess is it's because of capacity upgrades going on atm, this happened during the last upgrade.

Talking to first line won't get you anywhere, demand to speak to someone who's senior and technical.

But I'd say it'll pass soon enough.

It's not that your wasting your time it's people moaning doesn't generally speed up a planned roll out.

Your actuall download speeds/browsing shouldn't be too badly effected by this, just slightly higher latency and since no irish isp put an SLA on latency, you're still getting exactly what you paid for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,299 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

thats true... downloading/browsing is largely unaffected...
And while its true theres no SLA or T&C's regarding latency the OP is not getting what he paid for according to NTLs own website.

They state all connections are "Suitable for Network Games" while at the moment its clearly not so he may have grounds for complaint there...

If your friend is not having any issues 10 min away chances are he is on the same cable as you and therefor meaning more then likely its not an ntl fault. Unless signal is low at your specific address its unlikely to be a capacity issue or low levels on the line or a problem with any of the ntl UBRs you are passing through if you friend doesn’t get the same issues.

The problem could be on the PC, Spyware Viruses or what you have running any file-sharing or VOIP could be hogging some of that bandwidth.

actual 10 minutes away or "only 10 mins away".........more then likely he is on the same cable as you, so have a look at you PC

Where in Waterford are you, because there are upgrades of the cable network still in progress and you may be affected by that.

Bit of a long read if you do, but check my old thread about some similar issues which eventually turned out to be... the NTL modem.

It’s likely when the tec used a plyers to tighten the CATV cable to the new modem it fixed.

well, this may seem strange, but if you are having a problem with NTL you could always CALL THEM and see what the story is?

Ah thx for the help, ok it aint spyware because i also have eircom bb in the house and my ping is perfectly stable using it.
My mate says he's defo on a different line we are just bordering basically.Another one of my friends has the same probs, i'm hoping it becuase of the upgrade, also i called ntl about it and they guy i was talking to didn't know what ping/latenecy was.I was waiting for around 30 mins for some to answer me!! so i didn't want to go throught that again, hopefully i'll get a big fat new connection and everything will be fine, thanks again for your advice

I had similar issues with Eircom, different cause of course. Took over 3mths for them to acknowledge and find the problem, let alone fix it. I now have the same issues with my NTL connection too. Certain times during the evening (for several hours) pings in games go crazy. Pinging Jolt:

    Pinging www.jolt.co.uk [82.133.85.65] with 32 bytes o

One TO and erratic pings afterwards. When it gets to 11ish, usually seems to get good again. I really dont have the time to troubleshoot this for NTL with the fiasco Eircom put me through still fresh in my mind.
