Should I be surprised at the offer, reported by Biko , that the police will,after the investigation, destroy the DNA given by the four thousand volunteers? I do not think this has been the practice to date. The DNA of some remarkable proportion of the population is on file in Britain already, and routinely checked against biological findings at scenes of crime by computers. A belated recognition that retaining this DNA without permission is an intrusion of privacy and an abuse of helpfulness,( and should not be routine), would be welcome.
