A timed firewall might not be a bad idea (I was talking to someone the other tday, apparently such things exist, I was surprised, shows how technologically literate I am!).

People who live on campus and rely on Bebo to validate their lives could use it after 5 pm or whatever, but between 9 and 5 it'd be blocked. All academic departmental offices I've ever dealt with have been closed by 5, so people in desperate need would've been serviced (ooh, what a choice of words). Therefore it's not a blanket ban, but still allows those in need of academic access to computers to have it. A sort of middle ground, n'est pas?

I'm open to being told I'm stupid.

(Also, deleted my Bebo account on Friday of last week. It was the most rewarding thing I ever did online.)

He's on about a certain person who got caught spanking the monkey in G15 about 2 years ago.
Hang on - you mean G15 as in one of the places in Ag or as in one of the offices on the SU corridor?!?!

yes blush, timed firewalls do exist! in fact they're already part of the proxy servers just waiting to be used. i used one last year at home to lockout my net access during study time except ucd sites!

thing is, people are always gonna find a way of wasting time on college computers. If Bebo is banned it's only a matter of time before something else comes along. Even before Bebo took off, if you took a look around the labs at any given time most people were watching crap videos of people jumping off roofs etc. on ebaums world or whatever....... If someone has an hour to kill between classes and there is no Bebo I'm sure some other form of mind numming crap will suffice, you cant win really

They don't actively filter porn sites afaik.

The only reason porn sites aren't actively filtered in UCD and many other colleges is that most filters that are around are based on skin tones and such like, this would filter out a lot of other sites that are needed by meds, radiographers, physios and nurses for coursework and stuff.

Although admittedly it's really ridiculous that people look up porn in the daedalus at peak times when there's a load of people waiting.

Who caught him??! He did it in a packed lab! TWICE!
most filters that are around are based on skin tones and such like
That's just for images, you could block based in URLs, on the subject content etc. Though it's very hit and miss. Why should they block porn in particular anyway? This is a college not a primary school.

People should not try to find technical solutions to societal ills. It never works.

    Blocking a site is easy.

All traffic through UCD goes through a proxy. Therefore you just need one rule in the proxy: "redirect www.bebo.com -> 127.0.0.1". Or even just ignore the traffic. Its what proxies are used for...

the question is why single bebo out. i'd be against filtering any sites except obviously for child pornography which I think should be banned and noted.

Cos it is so obviously singuarly responsible for people wasting computer resources than any other site.

    Bingo.

Library has received more complaints about BEBO in its "Feedback" thingies than it has had about anything else bar the heating, which is always a constant source of disagreement.

This guy did it in science. And that was before laptop were popular (about 2 years ago). I don't think there even was wireless in the science block then.

People should stand up to people wasting time. No-one is going to claim that they have the right to waste time on bebo when people want to do college stuff. Don't whine to the man to make it all better, be an adult!

That's far easier said than done Rory. If you go up to someone in a lab and ask them if you can have their computer because they're just using Bebo, they'll laugh at you. I went to services today, they told me to go to computer services. Computer services as good as told me to suck it up and fúck off. I for one am sick of being pawned off on one person after the next and never getting anywhere. It's beyond a joke. It's the single biggest visible culprit for the lack of access to computers in Arts. I don't think a timed firewall is beyond reasonable. Anyone living on campus and therefore without alternative access to the internet (feck it, those not living on campus without alternative access either) can still use the damnable thing, but just outside peak hours. That's not unreasonable. It's sensible. There's nothing beneficial educationally about Bebo. Unless you're studying how to be an ass, that is.

Really? I didn't realise that people would be such dicks. If they do that, then you report them to services. Services can demands their student card, and there could be disciplinary actions. I remember 2 years ago when lots of first year science students were being rude about playing games. Services would occasionally go into G15 and get the student cards of people playing games. 1 week bans were common.

Huh, I thought that was their job?

Nope. Services pawned me off on Computer Services, Computer Services told me there was nothing they could do, and to go somewhere else. So I went somewhere else. And I'm still in the same position.

Just incase you think I'm over-reacting in thinking both Services and Computer Services are dicks, just read the Student Computing Regulations next time you sign in. Or right now, because I transcribed them and then typed them out so I could go to Computer Services and show them that I had a right to ask for their help in dealing with the problem. Although I don't think I'll bother. Once a dick, always a dick.

    Anyway:

    STUDENT COMPUTING RULES

GENERAL REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE USE OF UCD COMPUTERS BY UCD UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

The UCD computer systems may only be used for the course or research work for which students are registered as UCD students.

Use of another person’s computer account is strictly prohibited.

Any usage of the computer systems for frivolous purposes or game playing or any usage which interferes with or disrupts the use of any computer system by other computer users in any way is strictly prohibited.

Students who fail to observe these or any other regulations may be denied access by Computing Services to any or all of the computers in UCD. Students who are denied access to the computers may be required to pay an amount determined by the Registrar as a fine before being permitted to continue their studies in UCD. A serious or persistent breach of these rules will result in a report being sent to the Registrar, and an appropriate penalty will be imposed at the Registrar’s discretion.

    See my point now?

This is fair as services have zilch to do with the computers.

But Comp Services attitude is not good. Tbh, I'd bypass the monkeys in Daedulus. Most of them are clueless beyond how to print in word. Talking to Organ Grinders in the Computer Centre building beside CSI would be more productive I think. A lot of them are pretty good in there. Better qualified for a start.
