i can't see how Student Computing are planning to do that. it would make more sense just to block it. there are over 15 computer rooms on the belfield campus - i can't imagine they'd police them effectively unless they're going to target a select few like the LG's.
I think they could do it. One week bans for people wasting computer services. Imagine a services guy going in and banning about 10 people. People would quickly learn not to do it.

Yea but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for computer services to go around checking labs apart from maybe the ones in Daedalus.

simple economics. Balance the ban lenght with number of services guys.
    I.E.*
If there were 20 guys going round checking rooms and they catch someone on bebo just move them off the computer
10 guys going round a week ban
5 guys going round a month ban
1 guy going round a year long ban

*This isnt what has been implemented by the college or what I reccomend, just a BASIC example of how to balance enforcement effort with results

People are getting into Bebo in the library via Google. Somehow, some way, they must be stopped. I really want chips!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,121 ✭✭✭dajaffa

You may have noticed it takes about a year for a bebo page to load now. Computer services have "deprioritised" it to slow it down loads and stop ppl using it

Its going to push the pops and tarts back out into daylight. And just when they were starting to watch Star Trek instead of going out to Bondii. Make no mistake the Nerds will try again

yeah i noticed bebo had slowed down considerably today. what's more interesting is that they 'deprioritised' it... surely blocking it would be better as hardened beboers will just sit around till the page loads. it's not like they were gonna be doing anything anyway.

BEBO MUST BE ASSASINATED!! im logged onto it AND boards right now.... the chicken royale with sauce of time-wasting.

Boards should be banned too btw. But its not gonna happen so im pretty much happy out... in the land of ignorance, bunnies and autumn examinations

I take back what I said about Ag. They might talk loudly to eachother, but those boys were well reared by their mammies. Can you imagine a guy giving you his seat in the LGs? I was kneeling at a computer because there was no chair, and the guy beside me gave me his, even though he still had work to do.

Random guy, if you see this, you rock, even though I was stubborn.

Ok this is a little bit OT but I can't stand bebo at the moment. Well no not the actual website itself, it's an ok site if a bit limited in features, but this obsession with it is unreal. For the past week when I'm in class or even in work all I hear is 'Hey you on Bebo?!' or 'Add me to your bebo' or 'Bebo bebo bebo bebo bebo fecking bebo bebo bebo'.

It has to stop, Bebo is the new Crazy Frog Ringtone.

Bebo really does need to die. I was sitting in the back of Joe Kiniry's lecture yesterday afternoon, and of about 10 other people with their laptops on during the lecture I'd say 7 were on Bebo. *sigh*

haha my friend got caught by Library Cop playing on Bebo the other day

LC: hey you're not allowed do that, you're meant to work on things!
    Mate: I'm only having fun!!*
LC: this is a library! you're not allowed have fun!

    * = backtalking to LC? that's balls, that is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

    That really is balls.

I wouldn't mind Bebo if it wasn't such a virus.

I'm gonna tell you something, and you're not gonna like it.

Bebo is not gonna die - or, at least, the concept of 'social networking sites' like Bebo won't die. It's the first site encompassing a new wave of really 'casual' or 'passive' net users and, now that mainstream society has shifted towards internet access, browsing etc, you're going to see such sites (MySpace, Bebo, etc) become more and more prevalent. Hell, this amateur surfer trend can even be seen on Boards as we attract more and more diverse members.

The problem isn't so much Bebo's existence, it's what it's doing to people. Just think of all the hours people lose on Bebo. Then think of the impact those lost hours is having on their lives - something has to give. It won't be part-time jobs, because people still need money. It won't be socialising, because people need to go out in order to have photos to share on Bebo. It might be sleep, but most likely it's college work that'll suffer. That has a knock-on effect on your prospects in later life. Hence I firmly believe, and I'm going to reiterate something that I'm sure almost everyone is sick of me saying by now - ban Bebo 9-5 and things won't be as bad. They might not be great, but they won't be as bad as they currently are either.

I 100% agree, as I said earlier in the thread - I'm simply pointing out that this is something of a social phenomenon and is not, as some here are hoping, a "crazy frog"-style trend that will die.

(N.B. I loathe Bebo and, as of yet, I'm one of the few people left that doesn't have an account - just incase you all think I'm defending it. I'm not defending it, moreover, I'm just recognising the impact it has had on social relations - infact, several academic papers have been written on the topic already - though they relate primarily to MySpace, it's a similar idea (since MySpace is the...9th most widely used site worldwide and, outside of Ireland, is much, much larger than Bebo (612th worldwide)).

Gosh, that wasn't what I meant, I was just throwing another one of my 2c into the pot! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭segadreamcast

Oh I know it wasn't - I was just agreeing and then expanding it into a social context. Sorry, I'm not even from UCD :) *wanders off back to lonely DCU*

Remember that you said that one.... Bebo is the new rubex cube (was it rubic? rubec? i duno) Theres only so much one person can take of it. Look at the likes of Big Brother, that was revolutionary tv when it came out but now its just mweh tv. Pretty soon theyre gonna run out of gimmicks to keep people interested. People are salivating at every 'new' 'exciting' 'different' technological fad that comes along like Mary Harney at a breakfast buffet. Pretty soon someones gonna vom...

Now that access has been curtailed in UCC, UL, CIT and UCD (ones I know for sure) the user base will die. FFS I was mad into it but theres nothing happening anymore, nobodys uploading new pics or forwarding emails.

Just in time for exams too...

Rubik's actually, and I still have one of those, and can do it in three minutes. But that aside, it shows that these things never die, but just lose the public's concentration. Bebo, like everything else, will never 'die' - there will just be other shinier things waiting to...

    ...ooh, something shiny!...

    ...see what I mean?

Nobody, and nothing, truly dies in cyberspace...

We're all together, for eternity, with every message we send...

    ...

Right, I'm done being pretentious for the night, anyone wanna take over?
Bebo sucks, so does college, perfect bedmates yadda yadda yadda...
I'm off to find a pub

These social networking sites won't disappear. The concept won't die... they're like forums, but less nerdy - or like e-mail, but more social... they're about to become a permanent staple of the Net universe as far as I can see.

i had no problem using bebo yesterday - u sure access is curtailed?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,270 ✭✭✭singingstranger

What time were you on? I was trying to get it on Wednesday afternoon and it was horrifically slow until about 5:30pm, and then it picked up again...

I actually asked a guy who was talking to his friend while using Bebo in the LGs the other day if he wouldn't mind letting some of us who had academic work to do do it, as he was just using Bebo. He said he was just about to start an essay. I was pretty p!ssed off, and p!ssed off Blush is sarcastic Blush, so I told him that Bebo was great for writing essays with. He stopped talking to his friend, went back to using Bebo, and the queue continuted to grow. At least he shut up. But the same guy is in the LGs every time I'm there, and he's always ALWAYS using Bebo. It's sickening.

be a prick and just walk over and press the power button on the computer

    Maybe we should kill him.

It'll send out a warning to the others, plus there isn't a jury anywhere in the world that wouldn't be sympathetic to our plight. It's a no-lose situation, ppl.

btw, bebo gets slow all by itself, its nothing the college are doing as far as I can see.
