    from eircoms site

    Speed 512 connection 990
    Speed 1M connection 1700
    Speed 1M enhcd connection 3500
    Speed 2M connection 3500

3 1/2 times more expensive for the 2M connection fee. must be on hell of a Sat dish :D

    EDIT

    All prices are ex. VAT

Are those peak speeds or G'teed speed? Often the G'teed min speed is a lot lower. Apart from the latency issue, decent *REAL* bandwidth on satellite is VERY expensive.

Peak speed depends on dish size. Price of Dish goes up more than linear on area. A twice size dish has 4 times area.

    80cm RX only dish = €59.00
    110cm RX only dish = €151.25
    2400cm Rx only dish = €2,100.00

(about 5 times area is 20 times price)

AFAIK the 2 way systems have stronger arm/ tripod for a horn/waveguide to connect to a circulator with RX LNB and TX P.A. on it.

It may be that a more expensive Power AMP for TX is used on higher speeds too.

Wasn't particularly concerned with the speeds themselves, more why it costs more for the connection fee.

Would have thought the difference should be zero or at least minimal if extra config worg had to be done

the difference is one way or two way sat gear.

    having said that:

the one way gear (dish and skystar card and lnb and cable) costs about €200 top whack + €100 install ...say €300 all in.

two way gear (look at digiweb) should cost c €1500 as it is specialised,a lot more complex to install and not available on the gray market.

eircoms prices are taking the piss €1000 and €3500 respectively. They resell mediasat so a quick shufty at that site shoes

    http://www.mediasat.ie/pricing.htm

Home Product Hardware Installation Bandwidth /mo
    Home 256 €180 €190 €9.99
    Home 512 €180 €190 €29.99
    Home 1024 €180 €190 €39.99

Biz Product Hardware Installation Bandwidth /mo
    Biz 512 €1499 €499 €99.00
    Biz 1024 €1499 €499 €249.00
    Biz 2048 €2999 €749 €554.00

Which is somewhat more reasonable is it not ????

Looking at the PP slides especially number 2 it seems that they are all upload and download through broadband sat.

Take a look at www.teles-skydsl.com. Theyre half the price, twice the speed! I use it myself and am quite happy, although seeing BT upping they're speeds to between 4 & 6mbps has me totally drooling like a kid outside a sweet shop but been denied access. (No DSL where I live) A group broadband scheme is being prepared and will be submitted for Phase 3 of the CGBS (Community Group Broadband Scheme) The danger I'm afraid is that instead of Exchange Enablement that some crappy rip-off wireless service would be provided or god-forbid a Satellite uplinked Wireless service, Imagine the Pings  Has anyone here seen a Community Group Broadband Scheme being implemented on either a wireless or sat service only for Eircom to enable the local exchange say 6months later, or do Eircom stay out of areas that has Broadband from the Community Group Broadband Scheme?

No correlation, eircom do what they want , generally they will upgrade an exchange with space and fibre and will avoid upgrading exchanges without either.

A GBS shows interest in and demand for BB in area X and can help eircom to decide to upgrade an exchange.

Stay away from the SAT backhauled GBS and go for wireless backhauled ones instead. In Kerry you have choices as there are 2 or 3 operators like vbnets and premier who could deploy a backhaul link ...or even roll the lot out .

The trick with wireless is to start off with a local TV deflector as

    1. It is high
    2. It has power
    3. It has line of sight to somewhere.

Then work back from that to the provider(s) and out from that to the community it serves .
