Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No Default Gateway

    Hi,

I have a wireless setup at home, but my laptop's wireless connection no longer works. I've looked at the connection and there is no Default Gateway assigned. I don't really know what this means but am pretty sure that this is the problem. I have everything assigned automatically and I get an IP address and subnet mask ok. The connection works with a LAN cable but not wirelessly.

    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

Hi, i'm not sure why its not giving you a default gateway, the default gateway should be set to the IP of what your connected to ...
    eg
    wireless AP 192.168.1.254 netmask 255.255.255.0

    laptop 192.168.1.35 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.254

Just assign the addresses manually, one less thing to act up...

That didn't work unfortunately. Does anybody have any other ideas? This is very annoying.

    Thanks.

The gateway should be the IP address of your router. To get internet you ALSO need DNS.. so from a command window (start-run-cmd-press ok) type ipconfig /all

If you are not getting DNS then you cant get internet. The DNS should be assigned as again.. the IP address of your router as it forwards to an internet DNS server such as eircoms.
    Primary: 159.134.237.6
    secondary: 159.134.248.17

Putting these in manually will also work.
In fact... just copy and paste your ipconfig /all results and we might be able to help better.

That says you are not connected to a wireless network. Run a scan on the wireless network and connect up to it again.
Also make sure you have not mistakenly dissabled your wireless card.. is it a laptop? You may have a button or keystroke to dissable the radio when you are on a plane etc so the card is enabled and it all looks ok but no radio signal so you cant connect.

    What laptop?

Sorry, didn't have wireless connection running when I did that. I'll do it again with it on.

mmm wonder if the ucd settings are interfering with your home setup?

When you did the ipconfig /all were you in UCD or at home?

As Saruman said, connect to home wireless and repost the ipconfig /all output.

No, I'm at home doing the ip check. I've had these settings all along though and my router used to work.

well in that output you're not getting assigned an ip address over wireless. Disconnect the wired cable, then do:

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

Then post the output of ipconfig /all again.

what make is your wireless router ?

do you have MAC filtering turned on , if so have you included the MAc address of the wireless card in the allowed list ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭besty

The router is a CNET CNBR 914W.
I don't know what MAC filtering is to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

ok looks like you have a static ip address on the wired, and dhcp address on wireless which isn't working.

formatman's idea is a good one. A possible reason for not being assigned an ip address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

before you start messing with the config screens of th router

RIGHT CLICK the wireless connnection in windows ( control panel, network connections and choose repair ) and report back

Your obviously not getting a dhcp signal from the wireless.. Check your router actually has DHCP enabled and has not lost that setting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 794 ✭✭✭formatman

that router only has a 802.11 b speed connection ( very slow for anything other than casual web browsing)

the Intel 2100 is only b anyway so no b or g setting b/g mixed problems will be the issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭besty

When I try and repair the Wireless connection, it says failed to renew the IP address, contact the administrator.

nonsense! b network is perfect. Even if you have a 8mpbs broadband connection the router is still faster than it. Only advantage of 54mpbs (g) network is if you were transferring huge amounts of data withing the internal LAN.

    from the cnet manual

2.3 Resetting the wireless broadband router
The Wireless Broadband Router has a reset button on the front panel of the
device. In some circumstances, you might need to reset the Wireless Broadband
Router. Please follow the directions listed below to reset the Wireless Broadband
    Router.
    1. Press the reset button and hold while the Wireless Broadband Router is
powered on. Wait for 6 seconds, then release button.

after that , try connecting with the network cable and type in 192.168.1.154 in your web browser and see can you access the config screens on the router ....

Should I just try to reset my router and see what that does?

ok login into the router setup screen and go to the pages I've shown in screenshots below. Then report back the settings on each page. (Either note down what is filled in each box etc, or do a screen capture.)

I can't find the username/password combo to access the router. (I know, I know) I think I'll have to reset it. What do you think irlrobins?

    I'll keep you posted lads.

I can't upload the screenshots. This is so frustrating it's untrue. I'll just make sure all the connections are OK.

I have the Netopia modem connected via USB to the PC. I have the router connected to the modem with an ethernet cable. It is connected to the LAN 1 port of the router.

I am currently connected to the router's LAN 2 port with another ethernet cable. There is no ethernet cable connected to the WAN port of the router. Is all that alright?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

mmm no, you need modem connected to the WAN as far as I know.

That doesn't seem to be working irlrobins. My wired connection is assigned by DHCP. I just checked it there. The wireless one shows as an Automatic Private Address with IP of 169.254.23.19 and Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0 and, as I've said, no default gateway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

This is prob the sort of problem that can be fixed in 5 mins if someone was on site.

So you have modem connected to router via ethernet cable to WAN port, PC connected to router via cable and laptop via wireless.

PC gets an ip address ok but laptop doesn't. Is this correct?

Have your tried switching off modem and router, then switching them back on again?

Modem is connected to the router in the LAN1 slot.
    The PC receives the following information from the modem via USB;
    Address; Assigned by DHCP
    IP address; 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask; 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway; 192.168.1.254

Well that setup won't work with the router. You need to bridge the modem with the router in order for it to work wirelessly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭besty

I don't know. I've tried everything. I just have a pain in the a$$ with it at this stage. Think I'll leave it for a while before I go insane. I tried to reset the router but that didn't change anything.

Does it mean anything that the wireless connection on the laptop shows up as an "Automatic Private Address"? It's still giving the IP address and the Subnet Mask but no default gateway.

My laptop connection is to the router via ethernet cable too and it gets all the info it needs for a good connection.

Yea it means it's not working :p

So if you connect laptop using cable it can get internet access? Presumably the PC needs to be on for this to work right?

    No, it doesn't. I'm on my laptop now which is connected to port 2 on the back of the router via ethernet cable. The PC is on but it doesn't have to be. It works fine like this and the LAN connection (wired) on my laptop is as follows;

    Address; Assigned by DHCP
    IP Address; 192.168.1.7
    Subnet Mask; 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway; 192.168.1.254

These settings are nearly identical to the wired connection on the PC.
    What do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

I'm out of ideas. I'm surprised it works using ethernet with your current setup. It's not what i expected.

The problem is that your laptop fails to get an ip when connected using wireless. Router is obviously working ok with modem, so there must be some reason that the ip address isn't working.

You could try giving it a static ip address of: 192.168.1.25 andSubnet Mask; 255.255.255.0. Then set the gateway to either 192.168.1.254 (router) or the ip address of the modem (192.168.1.x). See if that works.

I've tried that before. Not sure how to get the IP of the modem though.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I might have to end up getting the Dell wireless setup thingamajig when the new desktop comes tomorrow. Bit of a nightmare.

    Anyway, thanks again.

I'm having a similar problem with a Dell Laptop (inspiron 1300, using a 1370 Wireless WLAN card) connected to a new BT Voyager 2110 router (from UTV broadband).

Wired (ethernet from router to laptop) works fine. Internet ok; no issues.
Wirless (no ethernet cable) doesn't work fine. Strong signal, but no allocation of ip address.

However - I contacted Dell for some support (actually I tried UTV as well but they said there were some previous clients who also had issues like this with Dell laptops and that they were resolved by talking to Dell)... and in response I got a bunch of recommended actions in an email which I will try this evening.

If it works - I'll post the actions Dell suggested here in case it's of use to you guys as well.

    Address; Assigned by DHCP
    IP Address; 192.168.1.7
    Subnet Mask; 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway; 192.168.1.254

Give it these settings in the wireless but using a different IP like 192.168.1.10 or something and also in DNS use 192.168.1.254

that WILL work unless there is something just pretty much borked on your wireless hardware either laptop or router.

Static ip though will bypass the DHCP problem. If it does not work then something is borked :D

I suggested that in post #44 and OP responded that he had tried that and it failed to work.

Thanks a million for all the help guys. I'll try that once more.

    Note: Borked = Quality word

Ok, I tried the above suggestion and it didn't work. Web pages wouldn't load but the signal is still showing as excellent. Is it right that the IP address I'm using for the Default Gateway and DNS is the IP of the Wireless Router?

    Thanks again.
