What I find interesting is that a lot of people here are being judgemental on the issue... Not necessarily you rsynnott, but others, and with a 3meg download and a wealth of media out there, surely the majority of people are breeching or closely approaching the cap.

No, I doubt they are. 30gb is equivalent to maybe 60 hours of video, or around 10,000 bibles. It really is quite a bit of data.

Well next month then I'm going to download the bible 10000 times and pray that they don't notice all the rest of the stuff.

You are entitled to a free transfer limit of up to 30 Gigabytes of data in any given month.
If you go over this generous limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB).
You will be entitled to use 30GB in either direction without penalty. i.e. you can upload 30GB and download 30GB in the same month without penalty. However if you upload 4GB and download 31GB then your account will be suspended.
This data allowance is calculated at the end of every 24 hrs and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account during the first month you go over it.

I restarted my PC & router this morning.... thus refreshing my info > this is my BT usage as of today:

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm within the cap...?! The meter is showing a cap over for the past week!

Also, if I'm reading the terms and conditions correctly, BT suggest here they'll suspend any cap breech, so they couldn't really let you go on beyond the cap for a couple of months and then sting you for a WHOPPER bill.

    I don't think they're being unfair, it's just a little confusing!

I wonder if you logged in at 00.05 on the first day of the month and didn't log off until 23.55 on the last day of the month, would any usage ever register?

Yes it does I have not switched off my rig for two months and the counter updates at 12:01 every night for me.

Ah well, it was just an idea I had. Once I asked BT about the online usage meter and why it was reading 2gb used on the first morning of the month when I knew the pc had been off all night. They told me that it only gets updated when you log off. But I reckon everything gets logged somewhere. I suppose on judgement day every file we ever downloaded will be revealed for all mankind to hear. It's then we'll hang our heads in shame.

At least I'll have downloaded the 10000 bibles, so it should stand to me.

UTV will have to account for their actions on judgement day too. They must be the spawn of Satan to charge that kind of money.

Well, there should be a certain element of logging, if only to deal with child porn and so forth. Whether many Irish ISPs have implemented it tho... Who knows? Probably not; would cost money.

Has anyone been cut off for over usage yet? I am on 29.30GB this morning and I feel like I have hardly used my connection this month.
Why don’t BT bring in an unlimited product (with a fair usage policy) for around an extra €10 a month, I know I would pay.

    Hold on there!!!!

€10 extra with no fair usage policy attached mabye....or mabye €5 extra a month with a fair usage policy!
Remember that BT have their OWN undersea lines(100% owned by them!) to the UK and are a MASSIVE company so data transfers are a very small cost for them!

Aye that would be a nice, How about something like €5 extra for a 100GB cap.

You're never going to get a DSL connection with no fair use policy :)

    That'd be quite the bargain!

In December, with the 2mb download speed, I managed to download 189gb, and that was only using it 24 hours a day, if I had stayed on longer I could have gotten more. I think we need a 300gb cap with a 3mb download speed.
Maybe pay an extra 5 euro if that's exceeded.

I'm just being realistic about it, anything less than 300gb a month can be exceeded easily enough. 30gb a month is a joke, we might as well be living in China. Ireland is supposed to be a high tech country. It's time we all came into the real world.

I agree... the cap is too low for the speeds provided...

    How?

Obviously you couldn't justify a 300GB cap with the illegal downloading of films, games and software, so I'd like to hear how you would legally, and reasonably use 300GB in any given month.

The answer pure and simple is women, dozens of them, from all over the world, charmed by my Irish accent, sense of humour and good looks, like to stream their webcams to me and send me their homemade videos. Sure I hardly get a wink of sleep. I don't want to offend any of them by refusing their videos so I accept all they send me. I wouldn't dream of downloading anything illegal like music or tv shows or prereleased movies from torrent sites. The only songs on my pc are ones I have written and recorded myself, apart from some hymns that I have to learn for mass.

I'd rest my case, but you just did it.

How did you manage that then? How could you use it more than 24 hours a day? Do you have longer days in your neck of the universe?

You see, even the days have caps on them. 24 hours is not enough, there should be 30 hours in a day. As soon as we get the BT cap business sorted out we should start looking for longer days.
