Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ashley Cole suing over the gay footballer stories doing the rounds. According to the BEEB
    Footballer Cole sues newspapers
Arsenal and England full-back Ashley Cole is suing two national newspapers for libel amid claims about the sexuality of two unnamed footballers.
Internet rumours spread after the News Of The World and the Sun printed allegations about two top players.

The articles contained broad hints as to the footballers' identity and have generated much discussion in chatrooms.

Cole's lawyer has issued writs against the papers, claiming libel, harassment and breach of privacy."

The England defender has had a difficult time on and off the pitch over the last year.

He is currently out for three weeks after spraining his ankle in his comeback match in the Arsenal reserves.

With the World Cup drawing near, Cole has played just over one hour of competitive football since October after struggling with a fractured right foot and thigh injuries.

And the star failed in an appeal last month to the Court of Arbitration in sport against a £75,000 Premier League fine for discussing a possible move to Chelsea while under contract.

The player has been engaged to Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy since June last year.

Surely every footballer could sue saying it was them in the article, if cole wins?

It is an odd one alright, particularly when you take into account how ambigious libel law in the UK and Ireland is

he's crazy, only people on the web knew they meant him, now everyone will know.
but the pictures online that clearly show the picture they printed was of him do give him a leg to stand on I would say...

Oh I think he has a case alright.

They ran a story on the 19/02/06 about gay footballers and they had the attached picture as the accompanied photograph. The blurred one obviously.

    -edit...decided to remove link...

There was also a piece in the sun a couple of days after this which had lots of innuendos in it about ashley cole and his mobile phone.
I would imagine this would form part of his case too

the guardian has a similar story and a link to a site showing the pictures printed were clearly of him..

Does there have to be a second player if they are just out ot get cole?

Saw the photos. If they use them in their case they have a good chance.

doubt it, there is still debate online about exactly which one of two similarly named players it is, so why confirm you think they mean you? although if ashley cole is as stupid as this maybe it will happen too..

Are the pictures clear? Because I just find it strange, both rags could say all day long that Cole wasn't who they were talking about, presumably they never actually used his name.

Isn't he in the middle of court proceedings about the freedom of speaking to other clubs while under contract, and all that tapping-up malarky? Busy lawyer.

The NOTW and the Sun never printed any names, and never printed any clear images of the players involved. Only thing they have mentioned is that one of the players is an England international and that the other is young Premiership midfielder, that's hardly naming name is it. Ashley Cole doesn't have a case here. These papers print scandals about celebrities week in week out with regards to sex life or whatnot. If it's true they can't sue unless it's an invasion of privacy. As far as I'm concerned, unless these papers have invaded the footballers in questions privacy (which they haven't), Ashley Cole doesn't have a leg to stand on.

The players in question names have been all over the internet for the last few weeks and if you wanted to know who the individuals were all it took was a google search. If they sue those papers then they have to sue any website/forum that mentioned names.

    Actually he does.
They took a photo of him and his friend, edited it, taking out the two fingers put up in each hand, and then claimed it was a photo of a gay footballer.
It is a case of libel which the NOTW and the Sun will settle on,

exactly and he doesn't 'have to sue' anyone else, just them.
I'd say he has a great case.

still a muppet for doing it though, 10 times the publicity now..

Be a great case if the papers have the video they claim to have!
