This is a fantastic thread and thanks for all the contributions.

I got circumcised 5 days ago due to phimosis. To be honest I have been surprised at how relatively painless the op was compared to my expectations (my wisdom teeth op was far worse). However, psychologically it has been a fair old shock to the system - I felt a bit panicked and nervous after the operation and that weird anxiousness took about two days to get over - this may have been the anesthetic wearing off but I am sure it was also genuine shock at what I was looking at down there!

I know this is not the place for medical advice but I would like to hear other people's experiences re the below:

    - My bandage fell off the day after the op (with a little encouragement from myself). Once that happened a large ring of swelling developed all the way around the penis where the stitches are - it is large enough that I can't see the stitches at all. Is this ring of skin normal and will it reduce in size soon? The swelling skin is larger on one side and 'puffs out' more to the right - should I be worried? The last thing I want is a wonky looking cucumber!

    - How soon can I go running/play sports again?

-I don't feel much pain, even with erections in the morning. However, the sensitivity of the newly exposed skin is just crazy - I'm expecting this to die down over the next few days? Compression shorts at night are brilliant for stopping things from moving around.

-My frenulum appears to have been left intact - is this normal? Tbh I presumed they would remove it and now I'm regretting not asking about it.

-In the first few days after the op I wasn't peeing straight, presumably due to swelling in the glans. It has improved but still not fully back on target - have other people experienced this and how long did it take to normalise?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give :-)

You are lucky to have frenulum left intact as it'll be sensitive in a good way when everything settled down. The aim will be different when weeing and you may have a double flow but you get used to controlling it over time

Finally got it done 11 days ago in the Bons Glasnevin privately not as bad as I imagined Went in at 7.00 and was done and dusted by 10.30 left the hospital at 2.30 could have gone sooner but I had another appointment in the hospital then rested for the day could not feel a thing down below
Took the bandage off the next day as it was very tight, as soon as I removed the bandage and the blood rushed back into my penis it just swelled up and was super sensitive for a day or so. No bleeding and I took pain relief just in case but it was more a case of sensation rather than pain.
Went back to work 4 days later Office job.
The stitches are starting to come out now thank god as they catch on my clothes a lot just wanted to tell my story and to encourage anybody reading this thinking about circumcision just go for it sorry I did not do it sooner but it’s done now and this page really helped me.

Three weeks post OP so I thought id throw up an update.

My healing has come a long way since my last post. I still have a few stitches left so visited my GP today. He was of the opinion to keep showering as normal and they will come out with a little bit of effort.

On Saturday I decided to take a proper look and started to rollback my foreskin to completely reveal the head, just to see if it needed cleaning. It looks like one of the stitches came out a little early and there is maybe half an inch that hasn't healed completely. Underneath is healed but the skin above it hadn't come together if you catch my drift. The doc also had a look at that and said it will heal together but I am a little sceptical. Day to day it wouldn't bother me but when I go back to intercourse with the missus I would be afraid of ripping it. I will let it settle for another few days and then roll back again with caution.

My frenulum was no doubt the worst part of this whole experience and as my bandage was off from basically day one, it was very raw and sore for the past 10 days. I used a little Vaseline to keep basically reduce the rubbing and its not scabbed over than god.

All in all I am a lot happier now with it. Hopefully the few snags left will recover. I am just afraid I will have to go back again to have the non healed part stitched again.

If anyone has any advise, obviously not medical, on the one or two snags I have please feel free to add anything

Well lads, long time reader here and decided it's time to take the plunge. Was wondering how exactly to get the ball rolling. I'm pretty sure I need it done but I'm not so sure how to get the whole process started. I was also wondering how long I should expect the whole process to take assuming I go public (no insurance) and how much it'd cost.

    Many thanks!

This is sound advice - if you want to get the procedure done via the public route -everything starts with your GP.

Chin up - it's really not that big of an issue and a lot easier in reality than in your mind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

I know it's not as big a deal in reality as it is in my head, but it's just the thoughts of what'd actually be happening that's making me a bit uncomfortable. Think I'll make an appoinment with the GP for next week. In your experience here, how long will it be between heading to the docs, and undergoing the op? How many months might we be talking? I've made it 21 years so far, so I'm in no hurry to hand by bits over asap

If you read through some of the pages here you'll get varying answers. If memory serves 5 weeks to 2 years.

There are a lot of factors - how urgent the procedure might be, how pro-active yor GP is, availabity of resources - varies by region from what I gather.

All in all the best source of advise is still your GP. He / she will have a fair idea of long it might take. In all likelihood you will be referred to a specialist in your nearest hospital. They will have a much better handle on the urgency of your situation and how long it is likely to take.

    Hi "about to lose it"

I went Private so took about 6 weeks from the time I went to the GP until my operation
Public depends on the urgency...same as you just going to the GP and the reason why fill me with fear but now as I look back and kick myself for letting this fear hold me back ,
I am circumcised more than 2 months now and already cannot remember what it feels like to have a foreskin by the time I was finished the operation I did not care who needed to look at my penis .

    Best Of luck .

got the chop myself 3 weeks ago, delighted i did, slight discomfort for the first week and first masturbation was difficult but like so many others i would recommend it definitely. I got it done in the arte novi clinic as well, 950 was the final cost, week and a half from the phone call to the operation.

need to get this done myself, I have health insurance but not covered for any private hospitals only public hospitals, does anyone know from experience how long it would take to get this done in a public hospital after getting referral etc? would I have to wait as long as people who have no health insurance and are waiting on the public system?

I spoke to soon , Had an eye infection that was thought to be cellulitis, doctor wasn't certain so only gave me drops instead of antibiotics. few days later my penis started to get tender which i just put down to the scar, came home from work to discover a massively swollen penis from an about an inch from my body to the head,
rand the doctor and he said it was cellulitos that had spread, had antibiotics injected into me and im on oral antibiotics,
Technically nothing to do with the circumcision but a complication that can happen if your unlucky,(same with any surgery)
Would I still recommend a circumcision, definitely

Sorry, my post may not be clear.

He met his GP in August and sent off the letter to the hospital to go on public waiting list.

Met with consultant in middle of May ish and is getting the operation done at the end of June.

    All on the public system.

I guess that makes it about 6 ish weeks from meeting the consultant to getting the operation.

    Hi there,

I had it done shortly after I was born in 1974. A lot of Irish people think that Routine Infant Circumcision only happened in the USA / Canada / Australia but it was certainly practised in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway back then. The Gynaecologist at the time was a firm believer in the whole "get it over and done with while he's a baby" and hygiene arguments and (with parental consent) carried out the procedure a few days after birth. I often wonder what percentage of boys that were born in this hospital during the late 60s, 70s and early 80s (he retired around 1983) got snipped. Will probably never know, as it's a taboo topic of conversation for most men, apart from silly jokes that is!

Oh it was quite common in Ireland well into the 1960's and tapered off after that. I remember Gerry Ryan having a spot on his radio programme concerning it and him noting that most of his mates of his generation had been chopped as babies. I do know my maternal grandmother was quite put out that my parents didn't have it done to me(my cousins on that side had it done I believe). This was the late 1960's. It was a fashionable medical procedure throughout the English speaking world from the late 19th century onwards, it's only in America where it remained a fashion down to today.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

    Hi Lads,

Long time reader, hoping to get the procedure done shortly in Malahide once the funds are available.

    Quick question...

I see that the clinic in question is advertising the fact that they now use laser circumcision as opposed to traditional scalpel. Supposedly this results in a neater cut, less bleeding, neater scar, and faster recovery.

Obviously very few people (if any) will have had experience of undergoing both types of procedure, but has anyone here had the laser procedure done? Id be interested to hear how you got on and perhaps compare to other lads experience in recovering from the traditional method.

    Cheers

geronimo123 and Wibbs - Somewhere back in the thread is my full story. In brief: I was born in the late 1940s, in Northern Ireland, my mother's lot were loyalist. When Prince Charles was born (1948?) it was publically announced that he had been circumcised. The UK National Health Service was formed in about 1948 - for a short period circumcision was free on demand. It was demanded for me. Since finding out what was done to me, I have hated it. I have now restored, by non-surgical means, a very realistic looking foreskin. I'm a runner and gym user and most guys here (Belfast region) who have been circumcised seem to be about my age.

I'm sure you guys who decide to have a circumcision will not request it for your sons.

Anony88 - I'm sure that you have tried non-surgical methods to relieve a tight frenar band (or frenulum) before resorting to surgery. If the proposed laser surgery is in any way experimental, you may want to go into much more detail about the risks (risk of damage to glans?) with the unit concerned.

    Hi all,

Had a full circumscision last Monday week. I seem to have a nasty infection. Lots of white cells and discharge. Went to GP last Thursday swabs taken, results won't be available until Monday. On Max dose of penicillin 4X500mg daily. Three days into antibiotic and no improvement. Looks very nasty. Anyone else here had to cope with post-op infection? Did things settle down? I think I will contact surgeon on Monday. Any feedback appreciated.

Did you bathe it daily in Dettol?

  • Registered Users Posts: 197 ✭✭Pappacharlie

No> I did as instructed, daily bath in water only. That was the advise given.
