Is bebo being throttled in NUIM?

    at the moment:
Any/every website is fast to use, as fast as normal.
    except bebo.com
But when I use a web proxy/friends computer off campus to access the site, its back to being nice and fast again.

So as far as I can see, either Bebo.com is throttling the NUIM ip(s) or the computer centre is throttling bebo.com
There are a few other techie reasons why this could happen, but they all seem unlikely.

It's often the same for me and I'm at home with a broadband connection.

    It's Bebo's database.

the fact that bebo seems to be lightning fast through VNC'ing to a remote server of mine and through www proxys leads me to think otherwise.

    Anybody know the story?

i would imagine bebo are throttling the number of connections from any one ip/ip block, all the college are getting it because of the mass number of connections through proxies or just from the same ip block. Its pretty bad in TCD also, 5mins for a page to load during the day.

Though it can just be bebo's site too as going through sixxs's ipv6 to ipv4 gateway earlier didn't speed things up....

Do the on campus apts have the same internet thingy as the college?

So like, if it's banned in college would it also be banned in the apartments?

Well at least you'd still have Bebo at home Freddie. I'd be royallly screwed. It's like some sad ass attempt to make us have nothing to do cept study.

You can come home to mine 2 nights a week to go on bebo k ;) Bring your own dinner.

Only 2 nights?? I'd die if that's all I was on Bebo! Suppose I could just fly down the town to the net cafe by the cop shop. Such hassle!

Ahh yeah, but I've been on other boards/etc almost nonstop since the late 90s and I know how addictive they get. Its kerazy :)

Mabye we will start seeing "internet users anonymous" support groups?
    Or are they here allready?

Is there talk about NUIM banning bebo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 88 ✭✭Deadlocked

NUIG banned it buts its easy to get around using a proxy. My friend uses one wit no problems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

it's probably because bebo's servers are a pile of crap.

on there at home in the evenings, it's often 1 out of 5 pages won't open, and when you try it again 3 seconds later it's grand. be like that at any random point of the night....

I blame it on the oracle database they're using.

They can't ban it, I'm just after getting in to it!

Hooray!Nothing but a thinly disguised marketing scheme anyway, much like myspace, but at least myspace isn't so blatant about it.

I'd like to hear the reasoning for banning it...

I suppose it'd go something like "non-academic purposes" and "people using bebo take up resources" etc etc..

Sure block access to 3/4 of the interweb (including boards) while we're at it..

using a cgi based proxy is a direct contravention of college rules and will lead to a ban on internet use for that person when caught.

Would using a non-cgi proxy be any different?
