The theme tune for Doom 3 was done by a guy called Chris Vrenna (alias Tweaker) who used to drum for NIN. His stuff is good but the Doom theme is a bit different. I think its a Tool rip off but thats just IMO.

Anyone interested can check him out here.

Ah I know Vrenna's stuff. Never really did much for me, Tweaker's a bit boring in my opinion. He's done some good remixes though.

for those who are unaware, a news site spun-off from theninhotline has begun at http://www.theninhotline.net/toolnews/index.php

    tidbits of info:

apparently vicarious will be streamed on toolband.com on monday (they did the same for schism)

the website will get an overhaul to co-encide with the new album

The album cover/booklet may be a digipak which folds out into a crazy stereo-optic image

Cool; was thinking the site hadn't changed in a while..

Anyone got the hang of this stereoscoptic malarkey? Trying to do the cross eyed thing but it just isn't working for me; I hope they give away free glasses with the album :D

If that's what the new Tool album sounds like then I'm disappointed. Sounds more like a band playing Tool by numbers.

Just saw a thread over on Toolshed with a link to the whole song and I had a listen. Was a little surprised by the lyrics, but liking it so far. Gonna take a good few more listens and try and get it onto a better sound system before making any serious judgements though!

The full version of Vicarious leaked. (It's 7:08 @ 320K)

I never listened to much Tool, but I just listened to Vicarious, and it sounds great.

Looking forward to hearing the album now.

Edit: You beat me to it Waltons! ;)

    Better luck next time ;)

Gotta say, it sounds like described in the review quoted a few pages back

This is weird, looks like it was leaked on purpose.

The leak originated here (Zomba are Tool's label):

    www. zomba label group. com/ tool/ Vicarious.wav.zip

(The link still works, just remove the spaces)

    Thanks for the link :)

Yeah, I've just listened to the full thing. I have to say I'm underwhelmed. With the other albums Tool have noticeably progressed but this song just sound like a weak outtake from Lateralus (seriously, the lalalala bit at around 4:40, WTF!). I'm hoping that the rest of the album is better.

well they did the same for schism.. uploaded a file and let blair or whoever does the technical wizardry at toolband re-jig it to stream for a day. and apparently on monday the stream will come on toolband.

i'm debating in my mind wether or not to download the track... i'd be worried that i'll be underwealmed, or i'll ruin the album etc.

I like it. It's very schismy..which is surprising I guess. But just more so the start of it then the entire song. The start is almost like a retrograde of it. Which is quite a cool idea. At first I wasn't so sure about the lalala, or how the vocals have been turned down a bit. But the whole thing works pretty damn well.
Can't wait for the album and can't wait to hear it played live
    w00t!

The litmus tests for me will be:

    1) How it sounds in the context of the album

    2) How it sounds live

    3) How it sounds after hearing it live

Why is the song 70 megabytes?

As with a lot of Tool's music, I think it is good background music...
Some good parts and overall I would approve, I suppose. Like the lyrics, guitar etc. Nothing to write home about though.

    la la la?

    Ah right, This needs fixing.

It's an uncompressed audio file (well slightly compressed as it's zipped). Probably meant for sending out to radio stations for broadcast instead of sending out promo CDs. You can't broadcast an mp3 (well you can but it's not recommended).

ok i caved and downloaded (i'm weak), and i love it. definitely has some meshuggah moments. i didn't really notice the "lalala" thing people have been moaning about, but that leads to the bone of contention with the song for me - why is maynard being drowned out?

I have conferred, in the context of the song, I am thinking the lalala is ironic.

I ****ing love it. I actually can't stop listening to it. Purely brilliant.Very Tool.
and as always ****ing awesome drumming.

I must say, as usual, excellent drumming and lyrics.

reading the toolshed forums some people seem to think lyrically it's stinkfist part 2.
especially with the line 'shouldnt have to say this again'
    what d'ye think?!

    Eye on the TV
    Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be
    Like killed by the husband
    Drowned by the ocean
    Shot by his own son
She used a poison in his tea
    And kissed him goodbye
    I've got a story
It's never fun till someone dies

    Don't look at me like
    I am a monster
    Frown out your one face
    But with the other
Stare like a junkie into the TV
    Stare like a zombie
While a mothers holds her child
    And watches him die
    Hands to the sky crying
    Why oh why?

Cause I need to watch things die from a distance
    Vicariously I live
    While the whole world dies
You all need it to, don't lie

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?

We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
    (line missing)
    Writers their stories sold
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die
    From a good safe distance
    Vicariously I live
    While the whole world dies
You all feel the same so why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain falling down, drowning grave and mound
    Part vampire, part warrior
    Carnivore and warrior
    Still have the transmit
To sink to the death rattle

    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-lie (3x)

Credulous at best your desire to believe in, angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head on out; Your head believes, so please give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again
The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive so it is
    So it's always been

    We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

    Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
    Much better you than I

Popular opinion seems to say that Maynard's kinda in the background to emphasise the instruments.

EDIT: Projectmayhem, I think the line missing is "neither the brave nor bold"
