iPod 40GB

Hi,

I have an iPod 40GB for about a year now and today when I went to update it everything went pear-shaped. iTunes called the iPod "DATA2" and in iTunes reported it had 44.5GB space used and 5.4GB if space free. This cannot be right as it has only 40GB in total.
I deleted all the tunes from iTunes and attached the iPod and then it updated and the tunes were still on the iPod. I did this in the hope it would delete everything in the iPod and I could add the tunes from a backup on another area on my laptop.

Does anyone have any ideas where I went wrong and I hope this makes sense.
