As mentioned in pervious posts, probably due to bandwidth restrictions.

Has it dawned on you that perhaps these blocked sites are being automatically blocked by their proxy filters. I doubt it very much if CS go looking for stuff to be blocked.

Any proxy bypass methods would be appreciated though. ;)

they're are plenty of workarounds such as 'use the internet' at home! I think its against board rules to discuss workarounds here.

Banning a website is as easy as ticking a box, actually that is all it is. The software they have probably flags websites it thinks are suspect and then admin's can decide if they should be banned. I dont think its automatically done. Google video was banned cuz its not college relate whatsoever, and streaming video's hogs the bw. Google video is great though. You can spend hours on it ---> another reason why its banned.

there are many ways to get around blocks such as this. a few of which do work within the college.

but, seroiusly.. don't. the college isn't a flipping internet cafe. it's for college related work. i will personally lay the smackdown on anyone found trying to get around college imposed blocks.

While I dont mind having a laugh for a few minutes its extremely annoying waiting for a computer and seeing people at this sh**e or sitting beside people who have pulled up about five chairs around the monitor.

Also its comical watching the hero's who bring in laptops........and yes use them to do anything but work on them.

well, i do have a slightly different view on laptops:

it's not taking up a chair i could be using, so leave them be :)

Ok,here's a suggestion. Get off your ass and try learn something about networking(hint : http, squid) and the other pieces of technology you use to access the internet?

How's about you shut up and go learn something, you're in college for a reason.

Ill leave the laptops out of it, but from a Computer Science background you would surely have to admit its funny watching the gangs of students who "must" have a laptop only to use if for the least academic purposes, which they are entitled to do, but funny nonetheless.

Ping for IP address, use IP address in browser as opposed to domain name.

Ahh, i thought the kids had found nslookup for that! Ping is simpler i guess :)

i understand why and how they do it, its not like you need a ****ing dergee in computer to block a site, also maybe they block it cause of the easyness of accessing porn on google video,

Cuchulain- the techs do block the site themselves it not "being automatically blocked by their proxy filters" the techs monitor internet traffic and they know everything thats going on in the network in the college . So if a site is getting a lot of hits they check out the reason why, most recently they blocked that bloody bebo crap every1 was on,
(which in my opinion was not only banned due to every1 using it but also blocked due to the fact you could look at and post pics, the college has to protect legally, it must ensure sites which COULD contain expilict content are not accessed.)

Ruaidhri - who the **** do u think u are, i'm not studying networking so why would i be learning about http and networking, so don't talk **** when you don't even know what i'm doing,

The_B_Man - they are many ways around it i know off but they all mean trouble off the techs if i get caught,

wheres me jumpa - so every thing your on a computer in the college your using it solely for work??? if thats the opinion your under that they should only be used for real work shouldn't compsoc be banned and the games taken off the computers?

TomTom- yeah i guess the banwidth could be it, i could understand them doing that,

elvis2002- "use the internet at home"?? heres one bright spark maybe i don't have the net at home, so maybe the college is the only way i can use it, why would i wanna access sites that are blocked in the college if i had the net at home,

And how do you know this El_Mariachi. You know a quick search will show that bebo is now automatically blocked by blacklists used by cyberpatrol and squidguard.

Thats almost as laughable as looking at people scrambling to find public cgi based proxies and cursing when they are 403'ed.

There really is no need for this thread to continue.

El_mariachi, a warning for your treatment of other people. While you may believe Ruaidhri to be "talking ****" the reality is he is trying (in his own way) to encourage you to try to solve the problem yourself instead of just asking someone else to do it for you. Google is your friend.

Now, thats enough talk of rebellion and what-not. Remember, techies hold the power to ban this website from the Carlow IT network and they also read this forum.

This is the last warning, read the charter.
