First Car?

I am hoping to this year eventually secure my first car! I am about to turn Ninteen next week and am hoping to get my backside in gear and get a car and a job and do something in the world. I have recently been looking at BMW's, I have two options, Either I go for a BMW 316 1.6litre Petrol usually. or a BMW 318TD, Costlier to Tax but cheaper to run. I will do the British weekend run I think a get one across the channel as there is nothing here only rip-off and misery.

Like I know, people reading this are thinking "man is he one Bullsh*tter", but since I was ten I have been in love with beemers, this obsession is down to the fact that my father had a 1983 316 ex-rally car that bred the culture into me. Insurance has me wondering I was about to get one two yrs ago when I turned 17 and was allowed to drive but was quoted €5k for insurance  Like I admit I am not the Multi-Millionaire I once famously claimed on After hours, however I am from a well to do family and the thought of me driving a Nissan micra is like uh :p

I wonder what are your opinions on this idea of mine. Insurance info would be handy too since I saw tumbleweed running through the MIJAG forum recently. My plan is if I get a large Insurance quote is to draw down enough dole to cover the Insurance and then work the rest of the year. Has anyone ever used excessive Motor Insurance as a reason for signing on?

    see ya!

If you are going out on your own insurance wise i'd say at least €4k on a 1.6l. I'm 18, provisional 1.4l car and am on fully comprehensive for €3.8k with axa, and to think quinn direct wanted €7k ...shower of thiefs!

Make sure you get your insurance right before you splash out on a car.

Either get off your lazy arse and work to earn the money to spend as you please on a car and insurance or ask rich daddy-oh to foot the bill

Do not fukcing ask me or anybody else here on boards or not on boards as tax payers to pay your fukcing insurance for you via the lovely income re-distribution system commonly known as the dole

    My sentiments exactly...

Because you would love a Beemer isnt reason enough to get one if you dont have the means. By a micra/fiesta/escort/whatever and drive it for a few years until your NCB, and age is in order.

Thanks for the "help" fellas  Was speaking to the Insurance crowd today and they will do a deal with us alright probably and I will get on as a named driver for a fraction of the price hopefully.

=My worst nightmare  Yep the women sure do a dig a funky fiesta on HP with a credit union loan for the Insurance

Yes I am and would gladly Nationalise all Private Insurance firms here and eliminate all competition in the industry. I would then set a standard and have clear flat rate Insurance polices across the board. Chav Motors aka Honda Civic 1990, Wide Exhausts, alloys. That sort of thrash motoring is driving up my premiums. The only accidents I may cause is other drivers staring at my motor & hot woman up front and them crashing as a result :p

I will let ye know how i get on with it anyways! :)

I want a porsche but i dont want to spend the money on one.
My first car 1990 nissan micra van
    Now 06 Toyota Landcruiser..
I will quote this line from girls i heard saying when i was a young guy:)
"Good things come to those who wait"
You will get a bmw just start with a crap car.
    About the dole....get a job:rolleyes:

Dont listen to anyone telling you you cant have the car you want. The way I look at it is its well worth the money to have a car that will give you so much more satisfaction.
My first car when I was 17 was a Totota Celica 2 litre and I loved every minute of it.
Since then I have had bout 10 different cars and now at 23 I just bought a hummer h2 (6 litre petrol)... 23yo, no ncb and on a provisional!

Dont let anyone tell you you cant do it
Give Goggin insurance on dorset st a ring they were the only ones in the country who would even quote me.

Some of us unfortunately dont have those means. (And if we had I'm not sure a hummer h2 would be still be on the agenda... I'd like a Merc 300SL Gullwing...)

A BMW 318TD or 316i were both underpowered and overpriced cars for people who only want a BMW badge.

(Hint: Most normal women dont actually care what kind of car you drive, although a pink Yaris can sometimes convey the wrong impression...)

try http://www.brittoninsurance.com/car.html and look for an insurance quote. Im looking for A 1993 BMW 316i coupe myself and insurance with them is €2100 TPFT with full liscense, im just gone 20 so it isnt really a bad quote for a start, same as i get quoted for a 1.0 Polo other places!

i would love a BMW or a nice porche, but at my age you just cant do it, so i have to get along with a 1.4, 206 at 20 the policy was €2900 fully comp.

Your better starting off small as if you go for big your more than likely to kill yourself and/or others in a big car you wont be used to.

    Creep before you crawl.

welcome to the new rich ireland, where 19 year olds look down their noses at a nissan for their first car.
When you grow up and get a job, like the rest of us, then you can go buy your beemer, until then, put up with the nissan.

draw down enough dole to cover the Insurance

I don't go to work every day and pay taxes just so you can have a big car, I am utterly disgusted with the above comment.

draw down enough dole to cover the Insurance
Is this a pisstake, or is this geit for real?
    If hes from a
    a well to do family
, and living at home(i assume he is) surely his dole money would be like E35 a week or something. Sure that wouldnt cover the insurance on the micra let alone a 316. There goes that plan. Shame!

And netwhizkid, what will you say when the nice lassies say "Allrgiht there whizzy, say thats a nice car ya have, so what to you work at then?". You`ll look real cool saying errrr, well me daddy had to buy it cause i dont know how to work and errrr, me dole paid the insurance.

Whos gonna buy your petrol, your little sister? :D

You`d be driving round in your Beemer when even your own folks would be saying to themselves, that useless liitle runt, and probably wont want handing you a car anyway, no matter how well to do you think you are. Ìf yo u have any conscience or respect for your parents(and their hard earned money) you`ll realise you`d prefer to be cruising in a nice car which you actually bought yourself, or at least greatly contributed towards.

This is the sort of person you will find in 3-6 months will end up with all wrapped in a ditch somewhere only thing is hopefully he doesnt bring some other poor driver with him. Prob driving too fast to show off his "wheel" to some of his other immature friends who between them wouldn't know what to do with a woman if she fell into his arms naked
