Speeds are brutal again down here in waterford. It seems to be a regular occurance in the evenings all of the time lately. During the day I am DL on average 950KB to 1100KBps whereas in the evenings I am lucky to hit 300KBps at times from heanet.

    Yo Aquos,
I'm out on the Dunmore road and my speeds are down to about 50KB/sec from Heanet :( First time this has happened me. Double :(

i can not remember any time when haenet was fast, it was always quicker to downlaod from australia (!) than from haenet

my max download were 9.51mbit but mostly i have around 9-9.30mbt

    Tue, 16 May 2006 22:09:31 UTC
    1st 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec
    2nd 128K took 141 ms = 929589 Bytes/sec = approx 7734 kbits/sec
    3rd 128K took 234 ms = 560137 Bytes/sec = approx 4660 kbits/sec
    4th 128K took 297 ms = 441320 Bytes/sec = approx 3672 kbits/sec

    Back up to speed methinks....

    1st 128K took 93 ms = 1409376 Bytes/sec = approx 11726 kbits/sec
    2nd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
    3rd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
    4th 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec

That speed test doesnt give me good results at all, get much faster results from anything else.

I can get high speeds off heanet, but not off of any other site. Even www.unreal.ie

When I was on eircom I got fantastic speeds from unreal.ie

If this keeps up I'll be going back to Eircon I'm afraid.

[edit] actualy atm, the entire internet is slow, except for heanet. Some sites aren't even loading the first time around.

[edit2] Looking at the heanet download again, it's dropped below 300k. fs

Alright, it seems it has nothing to do with NTL, once I unplugged my netgear router and used the modem directly with my pc, I'm getting 10Mb again. I'm guessing it's my router...

    ohffs...

I'm not really surprised, unfortunately this is likely to become far too common as we reach for higher speeds. A lot of networking gear just isn't capable of the high speeds that the manufacturers claim.

Just because it has a 10m WAN port doesn't mean it is actually capable of that speed.

This is why people in the Enterprise computing world can spend thousands on Cisco gear, as they know consumer gear is junk.

    It's supposed to be a 100mbit router, though :|

Yeah speed is crap slower then it shold be for me here in waterford im getting about 170k !!!!

The WAN port in these routers are usually only 10m, the 100m only relates to the LAN side.

Because it is only 10m, some routers will give you significantly less, as they were never actually tested at these speeds.

10Mbps ethernet doesn't give 10Mbps in reality regardless of the router or switch being used. It's also quite possible that the NTL modem is limited to 10Mbps ethernet, so it doesn't matter if the router is capable of 100Mbps on the WAN side. Cheap stuff like Linksys or Netgear is certainly not capable of wirespeed, particularly not through the firewall, but I don't think you'll see much degradation at low speeds like 10Mbps, except for stuff caused by bugs.

right im angry again with the b*st*rd* , i compained and complained and eventually got upgraded to 6mg last month , now it would appear that they have actually ha the nerve do downgrade my connection back to 3mb with telling me. arghhhhhhh im gonna kill them

Am a bit annoyed, after 3 weeks they finally managed to update from 3 to 6mbit (well 10mbit according to modem) and this is the best I get:

    1st 128K took 31 ms = 4228129 Bytes/sec = approx 35178 kbits/sec
    2nd 128K took 31 ms = 4228129 Bytes/sec = approx 35178 kbits/sec
    3rd 128K took 32 ms = 4096000 Bytes/sec = approx 34079 kbits/sec
    4th 128K took 31 ms = 4228129 Bytes/sec = approx 35178 kbits/sec

Same with heanet, I get about 300-350kb/s

Thats in Galway in this case.

    Modem:
    Boot Code Version : 2.1.6d
    Software Version : 2.94.1010
    Hardware Version : 1.19

I have a NTL Home 200 modem & I'm also on the 6mb/10mb connection and I have found that most of the speedtest's links quoted in this thread to be unreliable, my actual download speed's are nearly always around the 700 to 750kb/s,..I can tweak a bit more if I use IDM..

I think you are quoting the wrong message ? mine, it was ripclaw's post that's
    listing the 35178 kbits/sec speed's..

I was upgraded in the Sandyford area a few weeks ago (quite a speedy response to my request - about a day or so). However my speed dropped significantly afterwards from approx 3mbps to approx 1.2Mbps.

Even using a TCP optimiser i did not see any improvement. However i am using a hardware firewall & as soon as that is out of the loop there is a dramatic improvement in speed (see below). Unfortunately with my firewall the only option i have for change is the MTU value. In my opinion it is the TCP Receive window (RWIN) value which needs to be changed together with the MTU.

If you're experiencing speed problems & ahave a hub/switch/router between your PC & cablemodem i would suggest adjust the MTU & RWIN values on those devices as well as the PC. Adjustment of the MTU value alone does not seem to make much of a difference.

However, trying to explain this to those tech support morons at NTL is a different story altogether.

    My results as follows:
    1st 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
    2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec
    3rd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
    4th 128K took 93 ms = 1409376 Bytes/sec = approx 11726 kbits/sec

The service is NTL cable broadband HERE
The package you’re asking about is their 6mb service at 39.00euro per month,
they call it the "NTL Broadband MAX" package and when the customer applies
to be connected or upgraded to this package the modem is accessed online by NTL and configured to receive data at a "downstream data Rate" of 10mb.
However because of issues with line/cable quality in some areas and different modem types NTL can't/won't guarantee anything over 6mb.
In reality I find that I can download at around 750kbs or 1 episode of "lost" 360mb in less then 8mins

wait, we have to apply for the upgrade?

That test is horribly inaccurate. There is no way that a modem synching at 10mbps could pull down 35mbps.

I get between 4-20 mbps results from that POS tester, even though any proper test just gives me an even 9.6 mbps.
