Just had a heavy but short SNOW shower. No hail, no sleet. Fine snow grains even attempted to settle;) Its snowing in Cork now with a temp of 1C. Theyve done rather well looking at the radar.

The radar has being telling porkies ;) , it has been cloudy all day, but very few flakes of snow.

It does that sometimes. Latest from Met Eireann:

There will be further scattered showers of hail, sleet and snow this evening and tonight, which could lead to some accumulations in places, especially in parts of the East and South. Bitterly cold, in a fresh to strong East to Northeast wind. Minimum temperatures minus 2 to plus 2 Celsius, with frost and a risk of icy patches.

Plenty of flakes till mid afternoon, No threat of sticking and total precipitation amounting to only a few tenths of a mm.

    Min temp of 2C.

Currently just below 5C with Dp up to zero.

started snowing here again and the wind is gusting to 25mph.
Theres some angry clouds to the east :)

Croghan mt and the hillside all around it is very white, the plan is to head to there in the jeep around 8ish
We'll be able to drive to about 1800ft ASl-that part is the whitest obviously and about a 10 min drive from here or less depending on what way the road and lane is up there-icy I'd say!
    Looking foward to that :D

Some work to finish in the meantime :?

Never let up for most of the day here in Dundalk...not a chance of it sticking though, but the heaviest snow/soft hail I've seen in quite a while. I'd say maybe in toward eastern monaghan or S. Armagh might have got accumulations. The cooleys have a light dusting but that's about it. Some very nice snow clouds today too; you could see the precipitation for a fair while before it enveloped the place. On a frostier day I'd say we would have jhad maybe 3-4 in on the ground. Ah well...

We've had some fierce showers here (D15) throughout the afternoon, after more prolonged, lighter snow in the morning. Definitely the best day I can remember in a while in terms of snow, even without any of it sticking. It's snowed more sofar today than it did through the entirity of that other week, and it's just getting really dark again..;)

There was a small bit of snowfall around Navan today. Noting much. The flakes were pretty big at times, but they didn't last long. It didn't stick, but there is always another time.

How do you mean the showers might not turn back to snow darkman2? Why would they not fall as snow after we having snow showers all day?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 8,632 ✭✭✭darkman2

    3.8c dp -1c now

The warmest it has been all day

Last shower was about an hour ago and it was hail with a few big snow flakes in it.
We had no rain here :)

Looks like all the action is now for a brief time down in cork before evrything like the Irish sea dies out.

Anyway time for a quick trip to the mountain for the crack so I can actually peg a snow ball or ten :D

Ok the trip to the mt in 2 4wd's is sorted for after 9 and the camera is charging.
I dont know what sort of pictures we are going to get in the dark.

I hope some rogue precip comes in while we are up there because at 2000ft above sea level it could be fun :D

    The temp is rising croppy.
    It's now 4.1c here.

What we had earlier was a pocket of very cold air that came west in the easterly flow.We now are in a less cold pocket and have to wait for the cold to be topped up.
Thats where the GFS is actually quite accurate in the short term, the 850's were progged to rise through the day.

I posted that radar link earlier on today! It also updates more quickly than the Met Office radar.

There has been no snow here today since about lunchtime. This morning was good, however.:)

It is also downdraughts from the cb clouds that will plummet the temp in the showers is the scientific fact, cold air within the cloud decends rapidly towards the ground and spreadsout in a horizontal way that you will even feel a gust of wind just before the shower happens, also known as wind shear, downbursts. The cold is contained within the cloud at a higher alt.

    yes thats correct too snowbie.
there were some cracking good convective shower clouds in that flow today.
But the flow was colder than it is now.

    Hmmm better wrap up.
    20mph at ground level here

    Gales at 2000ft :p
