For furnishing an (owner-occupied) apartment, which stores are best in terms of value, quality, choice etc? Any stores to avoid? Please share your experiences of places in Cork city and suburbs. Thanks very much in advance!

Casey's on Oliver Plunkett have some lovely, fairly unique stuff, but they are pricey.

Buy and Sell is too much hassle. I'm not opposed to spending a decent amount of money on stuff of good quality. I've had nothing but problems with Argos stuff and it breaking. It's cheap and cheerful alright but the stuff really doesn't last very long. (Am thinking of beds and bookshelves and such here).

I was considering going out to one of the suburb places, seeing as they might have a bigger selection to browse through. I'll take a look in Casey's too next time I'm in town. :)

There are some good places on Shandon Street. Also the "new furniture centre" in Blackpool, also the North point business park "Elite furniture" is very reasonable.
If you take a trip out to the fota business park there are three furniture places there close together with a wide range of prices.
Also on North main street there are a few but I didn't think they were much good.

Yes the 'new furniture center' is quite good. Also theres a good furniture store on North Main St. Sorry cant think of the name of it at the moment!

Munster Furniture - very reasonable and hasn't fallen apart!

I found the "Loft" really good, near the Bodega. Staff were helpful - deliveries about a week later. Also, if you want some nice timber - try "Japara" at the Kinsale Roundabout they've got some great stuff. (If you are buying a lot from a store, always look for a discount, I got one everywhere I went when furnishing my house, by paying with Cash and asking for Discounts - ask and you shall receive 99% of the time). I've bought a few bits from Argos before, but don't try self-assembly - if you over/under glue things can collapse. I got a sofa bed from there, they took a bit longer with deliveries, as the product I wanted wasn't in stock at the time. Yes, Casey's has some fab stuff, also that place down Washington Street - but do you really need to spend all that extra cash to look flash - you're better off wandering around, getting ideas, then mix'n'match yourself. Good Luck with the shopping! J

Munster furniture on north main street are good to deal with. Have a decent range of stuff and they are not too expensive. Stay away from the loft -they only have the crap square deal cant be bothered selling. Greenwood in cobh cross aren't bad either.

Agreed about the Echo's free ads, I know it seems a bit downmarket but we picked up a lovely, virtually new leather three-peice suite for €300. The owner didn't want it because it didn't exactly match the decor of her front room!

Arramount out beside Chuckies (you may as well start getting used to that place..) has some decent enough stuff as well. Turn in by the driving test centre and its down that road.

Its a bit out but Greenwood out near Carrigtwohill can sometimes have good stuff.

If you're as far out as Greenwood there's Robin Wood furniture in Carrigtwohill too. It's expensive but has some lovely pine furniture, lots of kids stuff.

Harvey Norman have some good stuff too! (Go harvey,go Harvey.....sorry :o )

Try Regency out across for Harvey Norman, Not too pricy and very nice to deal with! They are in Oliver Plunkett Street too! Down by Aoife Landers. :)

I came across this post as I was looking for the Loft's number. Not bothered delivering can almost be added to the list. What is it about Furniture companies that they have to lie about the delivery date ? My item has apparently been in the van since it was due to be delivered last week !

We bought two 2 seater leather couches from New furniture centre and paid a fair but high price for them. After just over 2 years of use, the leather on different parts of both couches started to rip and tear. We did contact New furniture centre to see if this was a known fault and they promised to contact the sales rep and come back to us. After over 3 months of chasing them (and them never getting back to me), I spoke with one man who told me that the guarantee on them is only for a year. We can understand that but the customer service was apalling and the quality of the product was extremely disappointing. We would not personally recommend New Furniture Centre, Blackpool after our experience.

Hi, I bought a Natuzzi leather corner suite from Square Deal, it was delivered 10 months ago (end of Sept 2014), it was for an new room in an extension as the room wasn't finished we couldn't use it immediately. By Christmas it was showing sign of poor quality and not wearing well, we are just 2 adults sitting on it. Even with all the minding we have done with it cracks and tears have appeared since last month.
I contacted Square Deal, emailed photos as requested and management replied saying it's wear and tear, not covered under the guarantee scheme and advised me to contact a particular leather specialist in Cork which their customers use & my suite will look as good as new - hardly a good sign that this leather specialist is popular among Square Deal customers!
I have a 3 + 2 leather couch from Casey's, over 8 years old and not a blemish on it.

Had exactly the same issue with a Natuzzi suite from Square Deal and got the same name to contact for repair/colour renewing. Unfortunately said repair man refused to even come look at it as he said the colour I had (a deep red) wasn't suitable for re-colouring so I'm stuck with a very expensive, disguating looking suite.

    Would never buy Natuzzi again.

very pleased and will definitely buy again

Hi Wyldwood, Interesting that you had a similar experience with a Natuzzi leather suite and the same response from Square Deal - approx how long did you have your suite when it started to show that it was of very poor quality and started showing signs of premature wearing?
I was sold my suite with very high expectations of a hard wearing, long lasting, durable leather suite with a mention that it would last for 10 years!
I was also told that the same suite had featured on 'Room to Improve' on a house renovation in Bishopstown, Cork and they were flying out the door since.
My Natuzzi suite never smelt of leather. My 8 year old Casey's leather suite still smells of leather.

It's an insult to me to be told by Square Deal to contact this leather repair guy after a mere 10 months - it's not like it's a pair of shoes I'm talking about.

MBW, my suite is about 10 years old now but I would say it was starting to show signs of wear within a year to 18 months. Got no satisfaction from Square Deal. I'm sorry now that I didn't contact Natuzzi, maybe you could go down that route?
I also have another leather suite that I bought from New Furniture Centre and is perfect still.

I have found EZ Living pretty good to deal with.

I wonder would the small claims court be a good place to try as its not fit for purpose if it wears like that in a few months? I don't think square deal want to risk getting a judgement that says they mis sold a leather couch

  • Registered Users Posts: 764 ✭✭✭Kazbah

I think Square Deal have closed down or are closing down. I'd recommend Harvey Norman, Caseys, Cash Factory (Kinsale Rd) for Mexican pine, Factory Carpets (Kinsale Rd) for mattresses, Elite, Done Deal, G&C Secondhand furniture Carrigtohill.

Somebody told me during the week that they heard or read that Square Deal are to close down - I hope not!
When I went to contact Natuzzi directly online they say if it's a complaint contact the store where you purchased the item.
I will definitely look into the small claims court if I continue not to receive any satisfaction from Square Deal. I will contact Natuzzi directly also.
But if Square Deal are to close I might be left with no option but to repair it.
In mean time if might be not be any harm to contact repair guy recommended and see what he thinks.
Thanks for replies and suggestions - keep them comings!

Going by the huge banner saying 'Closing Down Sale' they have on the shop I'd say it's pretty certain they are closing down unfortunately.
