Well the exec and programme officer elections are nearly upon us. Who's going for them + who's going to win?

Best of luck. There's a guy from my year going for finance officer. We had to sign a sheet getting him the nomination on the last day of term.

I wonder will Enda Duffy run for anything considering he lost and desperately wants power.....(in my opinion!)

Well, as a law student you're not eligible to vote in the Arts programme office elections anyway.

    G'wan the Bond lad!

    Nominations of exec are...
    The Finance Officer
    Kazakova, Eugeniya
    Quinlivan, Stephen

The Irish Language Officer / Oifigeach na Gaeilge
    Ó’Bradáin, Darragh
    O’Sullivan, Dónal

    The Women’s Officer
    Phelan, Linda
    Rushe, Carol-Anne

    The Communications & I.T. Officer
    Redmond, Gary

(the joys of copying and pasting from the newswire).

Despite my 'hack' status I have no idea who Stephen Quinlivlan or Dónal O’Sullivan are.

I'll be supporting Darragh for Oifigeach na Gaeilge because he seems to care about Irish... and stuff (ok I admit it, I can barely string a few words of Gaeilge together).

Don't really give much of a toss about the other positions, Nice to see competition for them. Good for democracy and all that jazz. (None were contested last year).

The existence of the Woman’s officer has become a tad contentious in recent years, which is a shame because there's a lot of good work that can be done there. Unfortunately, though I'd say both candidates would be more than capable of dealing with welfare cases and organising a women's week, I doubt we'd see them do anything interesting, or revolutionary, like raising awareness of the fact that fear of genital mutilation isn't generally accepted as grounds for gaining asylum in Ireland, promoting the union's non-directive policy, calling for cheaper sanitary products in the vending machines, or pointing out that, yes, sexism is still an issue in ucd, and Ireland in general

    Isn't Darragh O'Irishname a big socialist?

Yeah, and I'm sure his big plan is to use the hugely powerful Irish Language Office to nationalise the economy. Then he'll invade Poland.

Well Orla Tracey ran for Pres after being Irish Language Officer. It's a way to get your name out there.
Anyway, I am right? He is a socialist?

Rumour has it he is also supportive of the Peoples Republic of North Koreas Nuclear armament, claiming that a ''workers bomb'' is needed in the defence against capitalism. In his spare time darragh enjoys spending quality time with his family, collecting stamps and playing in is band, he is also a well known connoisseur of the uisce beatha[/sarcasm]

After the amount of lies that buzzed around the place about me when I was standing for election (and I got of pretty lightly), I don't feel particularly comfortable doling out information on the internet about mates. Freedom of assosiation and all that jazz. Ask him yourself sure.

And, really, would him being a socialist stop you from voting for him. Wouldn't it be better to look at what he wants to do for the Irish language next year?

I don't personally have a lot of times for Orla's politics, but there's no doubt that she was a very good irish language officer and if I could turn the clock back I'd vote for her again. Political persuasions don't tell you everything.

Yes, it absolutely would. But I don't want to get into a big argument.

Well Phytia if you think you could do a better job, why didnt u run for it?

I never said I could do a better job. This argument is always used by SU types. It's not my duty to run for election. I have neither the time, or inclination.
I can, however, vote for the person I think is best for the job, or vote RON. And I'm obviously not going to vote for someone who has opposing views to my own.

What views, keeping a roving out for reds under the bed? :D I kid.

I will vote Bond, nto because he is a socialist because I am the type who would have cheered the lads invaded Poland but because Chris is aight by me.

    Presumably me (and maybe Pythia!)

Vainglory, to be a politician you'd want to develop a thicker skin! Smile, have a laugh! Obviously I'm not going to start a name and shame thread!

Some of my best friends are strong labour/socialist supporters!

How about: forget the whole left/right bull**** and concentrate on what is relevant to the positions?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭pretty*monster

No-o, I have a massive problem with people who wan't even everything bolied down for them. Everyone should inform themselves about the issues and vote accordingly.

I had a big rant at The Observer interview panel when they asked me if I was 'right' or left' it's a reductive term. I mean, there's anarchism, socialism, communism, liberalism, libertarianism, communitarianism, belief in direct action, belief in compromise, anti-war, anti-deportations, more government, less governemnt, belief in passifism, belief in armend revolution, pro-choice, access to education, subsidised this that and the other...
loads of stuff that 'left' and 'right' don't tell you.

To put it another way, I could say about any of the candidates. They are running for election to a unions. Unions are by their nature entities of the left. Therefore they are all lefties.

A lot of people would disagree with me, perhaps rightly. But it wouldn't make my statement any less true than other generalisations about the left and right.
