    pretty*monster,
I didnt realise that half the people posting on the elections threads knew the ppl involved personally. Humbert kinda laughed and said sure everyone knew poster X is A in real life and friends with B. This is one of my oldest rants, there is no such thing as commen sense or everyone knows, you've known for so long you've forgotton how you know, there is no inate naturl knowlege.

So humbert told me that he knew or campaigned for x, cant remember who. So that makes humbert, pythia, panda who had undisclosed affiliations and and others who were friends or FoF of candidates. Being a RL friend is probably as biased as you're going to get excluding family.

I have no beef with these people, Ive added 2 as friends on bebo since the beers :), but I hope next year the affiliations thread will be scraped, or at least enforced properly

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

to the best of my knowledge I know nobody who went for a SU position, except panda and that doesn't really count.
    P.S. the elections are over:p

  • Registered Users Posts: 337 ✭✭HappyCrackHead

its probably a bad thing but i know everyone who went for election and lost... i actually got to know them during and after the election, i knew pretty*monster and panda before hand. Duffy i knew in passing and michelle i had met on occasion. I also knew Enda who ran for ents and Dave Redmond.

i'm going at three o clock which by my CRONOMETER is in 8minutes

Oh no, I'll agree with you if you want. You are one of the sneaky unfair people. You only made a declaration after being publically outed :) And I'd bet you dont actually think you had anything to declare. Being good friends with someone regardless of how actively you were campaigning in RL (though you did hand out flyers or something) biased your posts*.
    .

Sorry I dont want to go on about this but I think calling ME one of the snaeky people is seriously, seriously unfair. All during the elcetion I was totally upfront that I knew Dan and I him wanted to win.My public 'outing' as you call it was when Jane said that she has seen me at one of Dans meetings. As I have explained and anyone in Dans campaign group can back this I never attended one of Dans numerous campaign meetings except for 10 minutes of the first one, which was a good three weeks before the elections. Please refer back to my post on the su disscussions thread which I wrote after Janes misinformed post(This isnt personal to Jane she must have just got her wires crossed when she saw me in Dans office-I was talking to him about the welfare race as I was going to run).I admit that maybe I was a bit personnaly unfair to some of the candidates during the elections but so was everyone-how can it not be personal when a single person is running for a position.I think its unfair you calling me sneaky, my public outing wasnt true and the only thing I did for Dans campaign was canvass for him on the day of the election.I never once went to his meetings or even spoke to him in the run up to the election and I always said on these boards that I wanted Dan to win so if that is seen as 'sneaky' then I really just dont know, and I apologise.I will try not to be so sneaky again and thus not state my affiliation to any candidate or not express who I would like to see winning the upcoming executive elections.

I have no undisclosed affiliations to the SU.
I have no affiliations to the SU full stop.
I've said this before so stop **** stirring.

I know you do. But it was to serve a point which I'll repeat again at the bottom of this post since you seemed to miss it.
All during the elcetion I was totally upfront that I knew Dan
Ofcourse you never denied it, but I think you just assumed everyone knew you knew Dan. I didnt. How would I have?
I think its unfair you calling me sneaky
You chose the word. This isnt a personal attack on you. If you see I had a little astrix. Follow it to the qualifier.
my public outing wasnt true and the only thing I did for Dans campaign was canvass for him on the day of the election.
The only thing you did was canvass. Thats right, the ONLY thing you did was CANVASS.

Sorry must have gotton my wires crossed, I keep forgetting peoples real names.

    Enough said tbh.
Membership, or former membership of a political party was deemed by you to be relevent to what someone had to say about student politics. Thus by your logic you should have qualified your commentary with the fact that you are a member of YFG.

My point which is very simple is that the definition of what was to be declared was flawed. Neither Pythia or Panda believed they had any material affiliations to declare. I would strongly believe that knowing someone personally regardless of canvassing for them, even if only the once in RL, would be a reasonable bias.
Since Pythia decided political affiliations are important, her own become immediatly relevent.
Clearly restricting the declaration thread to just class reps is A)Pointless and B)Unfair because the above stated affiliations are far more likly to bias an opinion.
But where do you draw the line? We all have motives for everything we do and say, some altruistic, most not.

Its completely unfair to say because Vainglory is a sabbat, Panda a personal friend of Dan, Pythia towing a party line or pigeonbuttler is a rep thus their opinions are more biased than anyone elses or should be dismissed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,437 ✭✭✭tintinr35

we really all need to cut out all this SU/election/left VS Right Bullshít, its getting very old very fast

EDIT: and totally fcuking irrelevant to this thread

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

Our party has had no involvement in the SU this year. Well, no more than any non-political society (and probably a lot less than many), so by your logic, anyone who joined any society should declare that. When I say involvement, I mean things like getting a societies grant.
So no line to tow. Therefore no outing of myself.
KR, this is stupid. Get over yourself. I'm not gonna comment on this anymore as it is now irrelevant.

Offer still stands if anyone wants to tag along to whelans tonight-should be going around 9-pandas friends are v.nice so dont be shy if you wanna come in and say hello!Think grimes is going to....dunno what other boardies.

Jeez angeloffire is popping up in a lot of places these day!

just to kaptain red eye-i dint choose the word sneaky-you said it about me.As I said before next year I promise to be less sneaky and not to say if Im firends, canvassing and attending meetings of any of the candidates, even if I am.

Hang on a second....the thread was there so that there would be clarity in discussions on SU topics. Myself and Truckle can't force people to post on it.
How do you suggest we enforce it "properly"? Feel free to PM any suggestions you may have.

Kaptain Redeye, you are the only poster who appears to have had a problem with this. The declaration of interests works on the honour system. We expected people to be honest about their affiliations purely to make the debates more transparent and honest and to avoid any confusion.
Its completely unfair to say because Vainglory is a sabbat, Panda a personal friend of Dan, Pythia towing a party line or pigeonbuttler is a rep thus their opinions are more biased than anyone elses or should be dismissed.

Nobody has suggested anything of the sort. The only one who mentioned dismissal of opinions was yourself. In order to have an honest, fair and balanced debate it is important to know where the person is coming from and what experience they have with the issue.

As has already been pointed out, the elections are over so I don't see why this needs to be brought up again.

    On Topic:

I should really head into college, so if anyone is around for a smoke and a chat at the D.O.L.C. later I'm sure I'll be there, procrastinating as always.

And I dont believe it did. I actually think it had the opposite effect. Ive outlined reasons why I believe this.

A)There wasnt full disclosure of all relevent information
B)It gave the (wrong IMO) impression that class reps would hold biased views (or at least more biased than the rest of us) in discussions about the SU. If you look at the results of the satisfaction poll, the assumption that everyone elected to the SU was satisfied was wrong.
C)The fact that there wasnt full disclosure made any shills that were or might have been more effective if someone assumed there as full disclosure
Nobody has suggested anything of the sort. The only one who mentioned dismissal of opinions was yourself. In order to have an honest, fair and balanced debate it is important to know where the person is coming from and what experience they have with the issue.

Thats why other criteria such as personal affiliation and party membership are just as, in fact more relevent as being a class rep

And while a lot of people werent stupid enough to say I plain just dont like balck people...
    InFront wrote:
.... of the 18 that voted in favour of the union, 28% have declared themselves to be union reps, and one is not a rep but is secretary of the union.
That 28% should be considered in the interpretation of the poll, given the limited enough volume of participants.

Again, nobody's value is worth more or less than anybody else's, except in the context of survey polls!

Same sentiments were echoed by MNG.
And then theirs pythia constant bashing of anyone considered a lefty
    Panda100 wrote:

    Quote=Panda100
It just shows that the person [who fails to disclose something on the aforementioned thread] has something to hide and I think its just sneaky and not fair to the other peoople using boards who want to discuss union stuff.

I didint agree with you that these people were being sneaky and unfair. I showed how you fit into the aforementioned category. And I knew you would feel this unfair, and wouldnt like being called sneaky, and I was hoping maybe you'd see that your opinion of these people as sneaky would change.
You felt your affiliation was non-material, just I felt being a class rep was non-material. But they are in fact the same
As has already been pointed out, the elections are over so I don't see why this needs to be brought up again.

So what if the elections are over? This topic didnt start with the elections, it for all discussions relating to the SU. And why put off this discussion till next year, there are flaws in he system; either fix them or scrap the system.

So what if Im in a minority, the mob stoned plato ;) .

You make me want to start smoking, just so I can angrily stub out a cigarette and walk away.

Yes because failure to offer a rebuttal (before a debate has already decended into personal abuse) is ususally considered a sign of a tenable position

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

You plural. God, nobody gets plain English anymore, it has to be dresssed up in colloquialisms or Hiberno-isms for people to recognise what is being said. *grrrr*

    Lighten up!

First of all there is a specific thread for this discussion, feel free to take it there.

Secondly, I fail to see any suggestions from you as to fixing what you see as a problem.

This thread seems to have become the "socialising thread" so if you wish to continue this you can PM me or take it to the thread I have stickied.

Yeah, it's definitely been lifted above and beyond its origins, so to speak - maybe you should change the title to "The Socialising Thread"? Just a humble suggestion, since the title now doesn't seem to refer to what is contained within... It's now hideously off-topic, but neccessary nonetheless!
