Thinking of buying a 4wd, have a general question on 4wd fuel consumption, does it use a lot more juice than their 2 wd drive counterpart ? It is petrol, and am worried with the ever increasing cost of petrol .

If you're talking about 4wd SUV v's 2wd car, it uses phenomonally more fuel due to weight and aerodynamics. If you're talking the difference between a 2wd SUV and a 4wd SUV or between a 2wd car and 4wd car, there will be a drop but not as substantial, mostly due to the extra weight of the running gear since they only drive two wheels most of the time with fancy diffs engaging 4wd when necessary.

I have a Mitsi Pajero Sport 2.5TD (comp car). I get about 370-400 miles on a tank, costs about 65 to fill when diesel is around the 1.05 mark. If ur on motorway and going over 70 (3500 revs) eats the juice. All in all, very heavy on the juice, personally wouldn't buy one myself, only would if money is not really an option!

There both mini suv, xtrail and sante fe, one is 2wd (sante fe) the other 4wd (xtrail) . Just wasn't sure why or how 4wd added to fuel consumption. both petrol as well.

If you take two identical cars (or whatever) and add 4wd to one, you will incur a weight penalty (all the time) and a friction penalty when the 4wd system is in use. That said, if you don't need 4wd then you might want to ask yourself why you shouldn't instead enjoy the handling, comfort, economy and safety benefits of a car.
