It's a great shot of the rugby player dude, but what's up with the bevel? Looks weird.
Would probably have looked better if you'd spent more time cutting him out... personally I use a large erasor brush with a very soft edge, then work my way down in size until I'm happy with it.
The IRFU logo looks a bit artifacty aswell, I'd have left it smaller or traced over it with vectors... bring it up clean.
Though I know you probably didn't want to spend hours getting everything perfect for a quick celebratory pic.
Sorry if we're not doing C&C here btw ;)

Aye, i didnt spend to long on it, the bevel was an attempt to cover up my shoddy cutting of BOD. Thanks for the comments, appreciate it :)

Few suggestions wouldn't be out of order; Shrimp, you should be able to give a few pointers on wallpaper design.

Ya rly... you'd think this was hotornot.com the way people are posting.
    "ugly... NEEXT..."

It didn't used to be this way Smithers.
Why I haven't seen a photoshop-this thread around here in ages.

    ok a few basic pointers:

don't ever use the bevel tool

drop shadow doesn't make everything great

that glow on the ireland flag along with a drop shadow is plain wrong

Basically take it easy on the special effects until you get a feel for what colours work, you can use bevels, drop shadows etc, but only when they complement the colours used. Your grasp of colour in this piece is, unfortunately, very poor. When you see a really good image, take a while to look at what colours are used, how they relate to each other and note it. Save such images in a dedicated folder or something. You can later browse this folder when you're looking for ideas.

Here's a quick rehash of your wallpaper that i did using all the same elements:

    Much better.
    But...
    - The colour is just so very very horrible. I'll be nice and pretend it reminds me of fudge. :)
    - The player outline could do with cleaning up a little (White spots, missing studs, etc.)
    - It's still quite cluttered. (Less is more.)
    - Reduced opacity may improve usability - remember that icons may be sitting on top of the image(s)...

At the end of the day, if it's intended for your desktop then design it any way you please.

You need to work on your chopping, its an essential skill.

A safe way to do it is layer mask (read here)

Ps I had to have a go myself, I think the colour bit might be a bit naff, but meh...
